To cancel a Planet Fitness membership, you have three options: cancel online through your account, walk into your home club and sign a cancellation form, or mail a written cancellation notice to your home club by certified mail. Whichever route you pick, your club needs the request by the 10th of the month to stop the monthly draft that hits on the 17th.
Cancel Online
Planet Fitness rolled out online cancellation across all locations in 2025, and for most members this is the fastest route.1Planet Fitness. Planet Fitness Customer Service and FAQ Log in on the Planet Fitness website, go to your membership details, and follow the prompts to submit the cancellation.
Availability can still depend on your membership type and home club. Planet Fitness’s own FAQ notes that “some members may also be eligible to cancel their membership online based on their membership type and the location of their home club.” If you log in and don’t see a cancellation option, you’ll need one of the two methods below.
Cancel in Person at Your Home Club
Your home club is the specific location where you signed up, and it’s the only branch that can process your cancellation. Bring a photo ID and know your Member ID, which appears on your physical key tag or in the barcode section of the Planet Fitness app.
Staff will pull up your account and hand you a cancellation form to sign. Before you leave, ask for a printed or emailed confirmation showing the date the request was processed and the effective end date of your membership. Hold onto it. If you’re told only a manager can process cancellations and none is available, get the name of the person you spoke with and the date of your visit before you go.
Cancel by Mail
If online isn’t an option and you can’t get to the gym, mail a cancellation letter to your home club by Certified Mail with Return Receipt Requested through USPS. That gives you a tracking number, a delivery record, and a signed green card mailed back after someone at the gym accepts the letter. Gym cancellation disputes often come down to “we never got your letter,” and those two receipts are your evidence.
Keep the letter short. Include your full name, date of birth, mailing address, the phone number on the account, your Member ID, and a plain statement that you want to cancel your membership. Store the tracking receipt and the green return card together.
Billing Deadlines That Decide Your Final Charge
The Monthly Draft on the 17th
Planet Fitness drafts monthly dues on the 17th of each month. Because billing changes take up to seven business days to process, the club needs your cancellation by the 10th to stop the next draft.1Planet Fitness. Planet Fitness Customer Service and FAQ Cancel on the 11th and you’ll pay one more month. Don’t expect an exception for being a day late.
The $49 Annual Fee
Planet Fitness also charges a $49 annual fee that hits roughly two months after your original signup date, not on a fixed calendar date. To avoid it, your cancellation must be received by the 25th of the month before the fee is due. Once charged, the annual fee is generally nonrefundable. If dodging this fee is your main reason for canceling, look up your signup date, count forward two months, and back up from there.
The $58 Buyout Fee for Early Cancellation
Some Planet Fitness memberships carry a minimum commitment period, often 12 months. Cancel before that term ends and you’ll owe a $58 buyout fee on top of your final month’s dues, regardless of which cancellation method you use. Check your original agreement through your online account or ask your home club whether your plan has a commitment term.
Month-to-month memberships with no commitment don’t carry a buyout fee. On those plans you can cancel anytime and only owe the remaining dues through your current billing cycle.
Freezing Instead of Canceling
If you’re not sure you’re done for good, a freeze pauses your monthly dues for up to two consecutive months, once per calendar year. You’ll still owe the annual fee if it falls during the freeze, but you keep your current rate and skip the re-enrollment fee you’d pay if you canceled and later came back. Freezing suits temporary situations like travel or injury. If you know you’re finished with the gym, cancel; a freeze just delays the decision.
Why You Can’t Just Cancel Your Card
Canceling the credit card on file or letting payments bounce does not cancel your membership. Planet Fitness will keep billing you, and after roughly 60 to 90 days of missed payments, unpaid balances typically get handed to a third-party collections agency. Once the debt is reported to the credit bureaus, it can drop your score by 50 to 100 points, and the collections mark stays on your report for up to seven years.
The damage is out of all proportion to the amount owed. Cancel formally through one of the three methods, keep your confirmation, and check your bank statements for at least 60 days afterward to make sure the charges have actually stopped.
Your Right to Cancel Online Under the FTC Rule
The Federal Trade Commission finalized a rule in late 2024 requiring businesses to make cancellation as easy as enrollment. If you signed up online, the business must let you cancel online. The rule applies to “almost all negative option programs in any media,” gym memberships included.2Federal Trade Commission. If a Planet Fitness location refuses to let you cancel through the same channel you used to sign up, you can file a complaint with the FTC at ftc.gov/complaint. It won’t force an instant resolution, but the rule gives you leverage when a club tries to send you on a runaround.
