To cancel your Planet Fitness membership, you have two options: go to your home club in person with a photo ID, or send a cancellation letter by certified mail with return receipt requested to that same club. There is no online, app, phone, or email cancellation. To avoid another month of dues, submit the request by the 10th; to avoid the annual enhancement fee, submit it by the 25th of the month before that fee is due.
Cancel in Person at Your Home Club
Your “home club” is the location listed on your account, usually where you originally signed up. You can’t cancel at a different Planet Fitness unless you first transfer your membership there.
Bring a valid photo ID: a driver’s license, state ID, or passport. Ask the front desk for a cancellation form. It will ask for your name, address, membership ID number (printed on your key tag or visible in your online account), and signature. Fill in every field. An incomplete form gives the club a reason to delay processing.
Before you leave, ask for a printed or emailed copy of the completed form. That confirmation is your proof the club accepted the request, and it’s the fastest way to resolve a billing error weeks later.
Cancel by Certified Mail
If you’ve moved or can’t get to the club during business hours, send a cancellation letter by certified mail with return receipt requested. Address it to your home club, not to Planet Fitness corporate.
Include the following:
- Your full name as it appears on the membership
- The phone number and email tied to your account
- The city and state of your home club
- Your membership ID or barcode number
- A clear cancellation statement, such as “I am requesting cancellation of my Planet Fitness membership effective immediately”
- The date and your handwritten signature
At the post office, request Certified Mail with Return Receipt. The green card that comes back with a signature proves the club received the letter. Keep the tracking receipt and the signed return card together. Allow up to seven business days for the club to process the request after delivery.
Time It to Avoid One Last Charge
Planet Fitness bills monthly dues on the 17th.1Planet Fitness. Join Planet Fitness To avoid being charged for another month, submit your cancellation by the 10th. Cancel on the 11th or later and one more monthly charge will go through before the membership ends.
The annual enhancement fee is a separate charge, typically $49, that hits once a year on a date set when you joined. It is not refundable once processed. To avoid it, your cancellation must be received by the 25th of the month before the fee is due. If your annual fee bills in July, cancel no later than June 25th. Getting this one date wrong is the single most common complaint about Planet Fitness cancellations.
The $58 Buyout Fee for 12-Month Commitments
Many Planet Fitness memberships, particularly the PF Black Card, come with a 12-month commitment.1Planet Fitness. Join Planet Fitness Cancel before that period ends and you’ll owe a $58 buyout fee on top of any remaining dues through your billing cycle. No-commitment memberships carry no buyout and can be canceled at any time.
Whether yours has a commitment depends on the promotion you joined under and the franchise location. Some locations sell commitment-free plans at a slightly higher monthly rate; others lock every new member in for 12 months. Check your original agreement or call your home club before you cancel. If you’re close to the end of the commitment window, riding out the remaining months can cost less than paying the buyout.
Freezing Instead of Canceling
If the reason you want to leave is temporary (travel, injury, a tight month) a freeze keeps your account active without the full monthly charge. Most locations allow freezes of one to three months, and some approve up to six in special cases.
Regular dues pause during the freeze, but many clubs charge a small maintenance fee of around $5 to $10 per month. The annual enhancement fee may still hit if it falls during the freeze, so check the timing. Freezes are handled at the front desk or by a manager at your home club. Like cancellation, you can’t do it through the app.
Military Members: Penalty-Free Cancellation
Active-duty servicemembers who receive relocation or deployment orders for 90 days or more can cancel a gym membership without paying any early termination fee under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. Deliver a written cancellation notice to the gym with a copy of your military orders. The club cannot charge a buyout, and any prepaid amounts covering the period after your termination date must be refunded within 60 days.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. United States Code Title 50 – 3956 Termination of Certain Consumer Contracts If a franchise location pushes back, reference 50 U.S.C. ยง 3956 by name. That usually ends the conversation.
Canceling for a Medical Reason
Many states have health club laws that let members cancel without penalty when a medical condition prevents them from using the gym for an extended period, typically 30 or more consecutive days. These laws generally require a signed statement from a doctor confirming you’re physically unable to use the facility, and Planet Fitness locations in those states must honor the protection regardless of what the membership contract says.
Bring the doctor’s note to your home club or include it with your certified mail cancellation letter. The note should state that you cannot use gym services and estimate how long the limitation will last. Some locations may offer a freeze instead of a full cancellation, so be clear about which one you want.
If You’re Charged After Canceling
Unexpected post-cancellation charges are the number one source of Planet Fitness complaints. The usual cause is timing: you canceled after the 10th, so one more monthly charge was already locked in. Processing delays and billing errors also happen.
Start with your home club directly. Have your cancellation confirmation or certified mail receipt ready. If the club can’t resolve it, escalate to ABC Fitness Solutions, the third-party company that handles billing for most Planet Fitness locations. If neither the club nor ABC Fitness resolves it, contact your bank. Provide copies of your cancellation confirmation and certified mail receipt, and request a chargeback. One thing to avoid: canceling your debit card or closing your bank account instead of formally canceling the membership. Planet Fitness can keep the account active, accumulate unpaid dues, and send the balance to collections, which can damage your credit.
After your cancellation goes through, keep an eye on your account for at least two full billing cycles. If nothing posts in that window, you’re clear.
