How to Cancel Planet Fitness Membership for Free: Waive the $58 Fee

To cancel your Planet Fitness membership for free, confirm you’re on a no-commitment (month-to-month) plan, then submit a cancellation request in person at your home club, by certified mail, or online where available, timed to arrive before the monthly and annual billing cutoffs. If you’re still inside a 12-month commitment, the $58 buyout fee only disappears if you qualify for a medical, relocation, or military waiver.

Check Which Membership You Have First

Everything else depends on this. Planet Fitness sells memberships either as no-commitment (month-to-month) or with a 12-month commitment attached.1Planet Fitness. Gym Memberships Month-to-month members can walk away at any point owing nothing beyond dues already billed. Commitment members who try to leave before the twelve months are up face a $58 early termination fee unless a waiver applies. Once the commitment period ends, the account rolls over to month-to-month and cancels free from then on.

Three Ways to Submit Your Cancellation

Online

Planet Fitness began rolling out online cancellation across locations in mid-2024.2Yahoo Finance. Planet Fitness Finally Made Canceling Easier Sign in at planetfitness.com or through the app, open your membership details, and look for a cancellation option. Availability still varies by location and membership type, so not every account will see the link. Members in California, New York, and New Jersey have the strongest position, since state law there requires gyms that let you sign up online to let you cancel online too.

In Person at Your Home Club

Go to the specific Planet Fitness listed as your home club, tell the front desk you want to cancel, and complete their cancellation form. Bring a photo ID. Ask for a printed receipt or emailed confirmation before you leave. A different Planet Fitness location generally can’t process your cancellation, because franchises operate independently. If staff try to push the conversation to a manager who isn’t there, politely insist on filling out the form the same day.

By Certified Mail

If getting to your home club isn’t practical, mail a cancellation letter to that club’s address using USPS Certified Mail with Return Receipt Requested. Include your full name, membership ID (on your key tag or in the app), phone number, mailing address, and a clear sentence asking to cancel. Sign and date it. Processing usually takes about seven business days after the club receives the letter. Certified mail with a return receipt runs roughly $10 to $11, and the signed receipt is your proof of delivery if the gym later says nothing arrived. Keep every mailing document until you’ve confirmed the account is closed and no more charges post.

Time It Right or You’ll Pay Anyway

Planet Fitness draws monthly dues on the 17th. Your cancellation has to reach the club by the 10th of the month to stop the next charge.3North Jersey. Want to Cancel Your Planet Fitness Membership Prepare for a Workout Miss the 10th and one more monthly draft will hit legally.

Then there’s the annual fee, about $49, which most members forget about. It bills on the first of a month, roughly two months after your signup anniversary. To avoid it, the club needs your cancellation by the 25th of the month before the annual fee is scheduled.4Planet Fitness. Customer Service and FAQ If your annual fee is set for July 1st, cancel by June 25th at the latest.

How to Waive the $58 Buyout Fee

Three situations wipe out the early termination fee for commitment members.

Medical Condition

A documented medical issue that keeps you from using gym equipment qualifies. The usual requirement is a signed letter from a licensed physician stating you can’t exercise for the foreseeable future. Bring the original to your home club or include it with your certified mail cancellation. Vague notes tend to get pushback, so specifics about the restriction and how long it will last make the process go faster.

Moving More Than 25 Miles Away

If your new address is more than 25 miles from any Planet Fitness location, the buyout is waived. You’ll need proof: a signed lease, a recent utility bill in your name, or a USPS change-of-address confirmation. The gym will generally try to transfer your membership to a closer club first, so come prepared to show no location exists within that 25-mile radius. Printing a map with your new address and the nearest clubs marked helps.

Military Orders

Active-duty servicemembers who receive orders to relocate for 90 days or more, or who get a permanent change of station, can cancel gym memberships with no early termination charge under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act.5Office of the Law Revision Counsel. United States Code Title 50 – 3956 Termination of Certain Consumer Contracts Gym memberships were explicitly added to the list of contracts covered by the SCRA starting in January 2023.6Air Force Materiel Command. Servicemember Civil Relief Act Amended Deliver written notice of termination along with a copy of your orders to the gym. Dependents accompanying the servicemember qualify too. Any prepaid fees covering the period after termination must be refunded within 60 days, minus the rest of the current billing cycle.

Don’t Just Cancel Your Card and Walk Away

Canceling the credit card on file or letting your bank account overdraw does not cancel the membership. Planet Fitness keeps billing, and the unpaid balance grows. After roughly 60 days of missed payments, many locations sell the debt to a third-party collection agency. Planet Fitness itself doesn’t report to credit bureaus, but the collection agency will, and a collections account can stay on your credit report for up to seven years. Go through the formal cancellation process even if you haven’t been to the gym in months.

If You Get Charged After You Cancel

Watch your account for at least 30 days after your cancellation date. If a charge posts anyway, how you paid determines how you fight it. Credit card charges can be disputed through your card issuer. Direct bank drafts, which Planet Fitness uses often, fall under the Electronic Funds Transfer Act rather than the Fair Credit Billing Act, so contact your bank to open the dispute. Send in your certified mail receipt, return receipt signature, or the in-person cancellation confirmation as proof. Catch it early; the sooner you dispute, the stronger your case.
