How to Cancel Planet Fitness: Methods, Annual Fee, and Buyout

To cancel a Planet Fitness membership, you have three options: visit your home club in person, send a cancellation letter by certified mail, or use your online account if your location supports it. Phone calls and emails do not count, no matter what you say or to whom. Timing is the other half of the job. Submit your request by the 10th of the month to avoid the next monthly charge, and by the 25th of the month before your annual fee date to avoid the $49 annual charge, which is not refundable once it posts.

The Three Cancellation Methods

Planet Fitness accepts cancellations only through its home-club process: in person, by certified mail, or online where available.1Planet Fitness. Customer Service and FAQ Calling the front desk, emailing corporate, or messaging through the app will not end your membership.

In Person at Your Home Club

Walk into the specific location listed as your home club and tell the front desk you want to cancel. Staff will pull up your account and have you sign a cancellation form on a tablet. Ask for a printed or emailed copy before you leave. That document is your proof, and you will want it if charges keep appearing.

Certified Mail

If you cannot visit during business hours, send a letter by certified mail with return receipt requested through the U.S. Postal Service. The green return receipt proves the club received your letter. Address it to the club manager at your home location’s street address.

Include the following:

  • Your full name as it appears on the account
  • Your membership ID number, found on your key tag or in the Planet Fitness app
  • The home club location
  • Your mailing address, phone number, and email
  • A clear statement such as “I am requesting cancellation of my Planet Fitness membership effective immediately”
  • The date and your signature

Keep a copy of everything you send. Short and direct beats long and explanatory; the club just needs enough to find your account and confirm you are the account holder.

Online

Some locations now let you cancel by logging into your account at planetfitness.com. Availability varies, so check with your home club first. Where supported, the process runs through the account dashboard and generates a confirmation you can save.

Timing the Monthly Cutoff

Planet Fitness bills most memberships on the 17th of each month. To stop a charge on that date, the club needs your cancellation by the 10th. The seven-day window exists because billing changes take up to seven business days to process. Miss the 10th by a day and you will almost certainly see one more monthly charge.

After the cancellation goes through, you typically keep gym access until the end of the billing period you have already paid for. Use it if you want.

The Annual Fee: The $49 Trap

Every Planet Fitness membership includes a $49 annual fee charged once a year on top of monthly dues.2Planet Fitness. Planet Fitness Home It usually posts about two months after your original signup date and repeats on that same date each year.

Once charged, the annual fee is not refundable. If yours is coming up, submit your cancellation by the 25th of the month before the fee is due. If the annual fee posts on March 1, your cancellation needs to arrive by February 25. Waiting until February 28 means paying the $49 with no way to get it back.

Check your original membership agreement or ask your home club for the exact annual fee date on your account. This is the single most common source of frustration in Planet Fitness cancellations and catches people who otherwise do everything right.

Buyout Fee for 12-Month Commitments

Planet Fitness offers Classic memberships starting at $15 per month and PF Black Card memberships starting at $24.99 per month.3Planet Fitness. Gym Memberships Either tier may include a 12-month commitment depending on the signup promotion at your location.

Canceling before that 12-month commitment ends costs a buyout fee of around $58. The exact amount is written into the cancellation clause of the membership agreement you signed at enrollment. If you no longer have your copy, your home club can provide one, or you may find the terms in your online account.

Month-to-month memberships with no remaining commitment carry no buyout fee. Meet the notice deadlines above and you are done after the current billing cycle ends.

Waivers That Can Eliminate the Buyout Fee

Planet Fitness may waive the buyout fee in three situations: a medical condition that prevents exercise, a move of more than 25 miles from any Planet Fitness location, or military deployment.

A medical waiver requires a letter from your doctor on official letterhead with your name, a general description of the condition, an explanation of why exercise would worsen it, and the doctor’s signature and contact information. A detailed diagnosis is not required, just enough to verify the request is legitimate.

For a move, acceptable proof typically includes a new lease, a utility bill at the new address, or similar documentation showing you are far enough from the nearest Planet Fitness. Military members need deployment orders or similar official paperwork.

Submit the documentation the same way you would submit a regular cancellation: in person or by certified mail. The waiver is not automatic. The proof has to arrive with the cancellation request.

Freezing Instead of Canceling

If your situation is temporary, freezing may make more sense. Most locations allow a pause of one to three months, sometimes up to six with manager approval. The freeze fee runs roughly $5 to $10 per month at most clubs, and some corporate-owned locations offer it free.

Freezing keeps the membership active at a reduced cost and avoids re-enrollment later, which could mean a new signup fee or a different monthly rate. Ask about freeze terms before committing to a full cancellation if there is any chance you will return.

Do Not Just Stop Paying

Closing your bank account, canceling your debit card, or hoping the gym gives up is not a cancellation. Your membership agreement stays active, and Planet Fitness keeps billing. When those charges bounce, the unpaid balance grows.

After roughly 90 days of unpaid dues, the gym typically sends the account to a collection agency. That collections account can land on your credit report. If a collector pursues the debt aggressively, a lawsuit is possible, and court judgments stay in the public record even where they no longer affect credit scores directly. The formal process exists for a reason, and skipping it almost always costs more than following it.

If Charges Keep Coming After You Cancel

Start at your home club. Bring your cancellation confirmation or certified mail receipt and ask staff to verify your account status in the system. Most post-cancellation billing errors are clerical and get fixed on the spot.

Planet Fitness uses a third-party billing processor, ABC Fitness Solutions. If the club cannot resolve the issue, contact ABC Fitness directly at 888-827-9262 or customercare@abcfitness.com.4ABC Fitness. Contact – Gym Member Support They handle the actual payment processing and can see billing details that front desk staff cannot.

If neither resolves it, Planet Fitness corporate takes contact through the website.5Planet Fitness. Contact Us Disputing the charge with your bank is a last resort; do it only after documenting your attempts to work with the gym, because banks handle disputes more favorably when you can show you tried.

Keep every piece of paper and every email related to the cancellation for at least six months after your final charge: the signed cancellation form, the certified mail receipt, confirmation emails, and bank statements showing when charges stopped. A clear paper trail is what resolves a dispute quickly if one surfaces later.
