How to Cancel Planet Fitness Online: Steps, Deadlines, and Fees

You can cancel Planet Fitness online only if your home club offers that option, and most do not. The availability depends on your state’s consumer protection laws, so when you ask how to cancel Planet Fitness online, the honest answer is: check your account for a “Cancel Membership” button first, and if it isn’t there, you’ll need to cancel in person or by certified mail instead.

Who Actually Gets the Online Option

Online cancellation is not offered to every member. It generally appears only for people who signed up at clubs in states that require businesses to let you cancel the same way you enrolled. California is the clearest example. Business and Professions Code Section 17602 requires any business that lets you sign up online to let you cancel online too, through a prominently placed button or link, without extra steps that delay the process.1California Legislative Information. The FTC finalized a federal “click-to-cancel” rule in October 2024 that would have extended similar protections nationwide.3Federal Trade Commission. Federal Trade Commission Announces Final Click-to-Cancel Rule Making It Easier for Consumers to End Recurring Subscriptions and Memberships A federal appeals court struck it down in July 2025 on procedural grounds, so there is no federal rule forcing Planet Fitness to offer online cancellation. Availability still turns on your state’s law.

If you joined in a state without those protections, you will almost certainly not see a cancellation option in your online account. In that case, skip ahead to the mail or in-person routes.

Steps When the Online Option Is Available

The process runs through the Planet Fitness website, not the mobile app. Log in at planetfitness.com with the credentials you used when you joined.4Planet Fitness. My Account Open the section labeled “Membership Details” and click “Manage.” If your location supports it, a “Cancel Membership” button will appear.

Clicking it starts a short set of prompts. Planet Fitness will ask why you are leaving and have you confirm. Wait for the on-screen confirmation before closing the page. You should also receive a confirmation email. Save it. That email is your proof of the date you submitted the cancellation, and it is what you will need if a charge shows up later that shouldn’t.

No button in your account? Your club doesn’t support online cancellation. Don’t keep hunting through menus.

Deadlines That Decide Whether You Pay Another Month

Submitting a cancellation does not stop your next payment on its own. Planet Fitness bills monthly dues on the 17th of each month, and your club must receive your cancellation by the 10th to stop the next cycle. The company says billing changes can take up to seven business days to process, so leaving it until the last day is risky.5Planet Fitness. Planet Fitness Customer Service and FAQ Cancel after the 10th and you should expect one more month of dues.

The Annual Enhancement Fee

Planet Fitness also charges a separate annual fee of about $49, usually billed on the first of the month roughly two months after your signup date. It is non-refundable once it posts. To avoid it, your cancellation needs to reach your home club by the 25th of the month before the annual fee is scheduled. If the fee hits on June 1, the club needs your cancellation no later than May 25. Miss that window by a day and you owe the full $49.

Early Termination Buyout

Members on a 12-month commitment plan who cancel before the term ends face a buyout fee of $58. It applies to both Classic and Black Card members who signed a fixed-term contract. Month-to-month members with no commitment pay no buyout; they only need to beat the monthly billing deadline.

If You Don’t See the Online Option

Two methods work when online isn’t available, and both are subject to the same 10th-of-the-month deadline.

The first is certified mail. Send a letter by USPS Certified Mail with Return Receipt Requested to the specific club where you signed up, not to corporate headquarters. You can look up the mailing address at planetfitness.com/gym-locations. Keep the letter short: full name, membership ID (on your key tag or in the app), your address, and a clear statement that you want to cancel. The certified mail receipt and return receipt card are your proof of delivery date if the club later says the letter never arrived.

The second is walking into your home club. Bring a photo ID and your key tag. Staff will have you fill out a cancellation form. Ask for a printed or emailed copy of the completed form before you leave. A verbal “you’re all set” is not enough if a billing dispute comes up later.

A Freeze May Fit Better Than a Cancellation

If you’re canceling because of travel, injury, or a temporarily busy stretch, freezing your membership pauses your monthly dues without making you rejoin later at a different rate. Freezes cannot be done online or through the app; you have to call or visit your home club. The annual enhancement fee is not paused by a freeze. If it comes due while your account is frozen, you still owe it.

After You Cancel

Watch your bank or credit card statements for at least two full billing cycles after your cancellation is confirmed. If a charge shows up that shouldn’t be there, your confirmation email or certified mail receipt is the documentation you need to dispute it with your bank or with the club directly. Most post-cancellation charges trace back to a request that landed too late in the cycle rather than anything intentional, but the dollars leave your account either way.
