What to Include
Give Rhythm everything it needs in the first message so the request doesn’t bounce back for details:
- Full name as it appears on the account
- Account number from your statement or online dashboard
- Service address where power should be shut off
- Desired end date (power can be cut at any point on that date)
- Forwarding address for your final bill
- Reason for canceling, such as moving or switching providers
The forwarding address matters beyond mailing. If you’re leaving because you’re moving, that address is part of what shields you from an early termination fee under Texas rules.2Rhythm Energy. Cancel My Service
Early Termination Fees
If you’re on a fixed-rate plan and cancel before the term ends, Rhythm charges an early termination fee. The structure depends on the plan:
- A per-month fee of $10 to $20 for each full month left on the contract. Eight months remaining at $20 per month works out to $160.3Rhythm Energy. Rhythm FAQ – Section: Enrollment
- A flat fee around $150 to $200 regardless of time remaining.4Rhythm Energy. Will Rhythm Actually Reimburse My Early Termination Fee If I Switch – Section: What Is an Early Termination Fee?
Your Electricity Facts Label shows which one applies. It’s filed under the plan details or documents tab in your online account. On a variable or month-to-month plan, there’s no termination fee, so you can leave whenever.
Moving Cancels the Fee
Texas regulations prohibit retail electric providers from charging an early termination fee when a customer relocates. You need to provide a forwarding address and, if asked, reasonable evidence that you no longer live at the service address. A lease at the new place, a utility bill in your name there, or a closing statement on a home sale will all do.5Cornell Law Institute. 16 Tex. Admin. Code 25.475 – General Retail Electric Provider Requirements and Information Disclosures to Residential and Small Commercial Customers
The contract is tied to the service address, not to you, so moving ends your obligation at that premises. That’s why including the forwarding address in the first message matters.
Switching Providers Without Canceling
If you’re staying at the same address and just want a different company, don’t contact Rhythm at all. Sign up with the new provider and it will send an electronic switch request through the ERCOT system. Rhythm is notified automatically and the handoff happens with no gap in service.
Switching does not waive the early termination fee. If your fixed-rate contract is still running, Rhythm will put the fee on your final bill. The ways out are letting the contract end, moving, or being inside the rescission window on a brand-new enrollment.
Letting the Contract Run Out
If your fixed term is almost up, waiting may be cheaper than canceling. Once the term expires without a renewal, Rhythm moves you to a month-to-month arrangement with no price protection, and the rate on that plan can change at Rhythm’s discretion.6Rhythm Energy. Why You Should Renew Your Electricity Contract From there you can leave anytime with no penalty, so a few weeks of patience can save you the whole termination fee.
Final Bill and Deposit Refund
After service ends, Rhythm issues a final bill based on the last meter reading. It covers remaining usage, any outstanding balance, and the termination fee if one applies. If you paid a security deposit, Rhythm applies what you owe against it and refunds the rest.7Rhythm Energy. Rhythm Energy Terms of Service – Section: Termination of Service; Return of Deposits
