How to Cancel SHRM Membership and Turn Off Auto-Renewal

To cancel a SHRM membership, turn off auto-renewal in your MySHRM account or contact SHRM’s customer experience team by email or phone before your renewal date. SHRM memberships are non-refundable and non-transferable, so canceling doesn’t get you money back for time you’ve already paid for. It stops the next annual charge and lets your current term run out.

Turn Off Auto-Renewal in MySHRM

SHRM memberships renew automatically every 12 months, and SHRM charges your saved payment method at the current annual rate without asking for separate authorization each year. Professional membership currently runs $299 per year. You’ll get an email reminder 30 days before the renewal date.1SHRM. Terms of Use

To switch auto-renewal off yourself:

  • Log in to your MySHRM account at account.shrm.org.
  • Click MySHRM in the upper right corner.
  • Select Account from the dropdown menu.
  • Under the Account tab, click Manage Credit Cards in the Payment Methods section.
  • Find Auto Renewals and switch the setting off.

Watch the timing. You need to complete this at least 24 hours before your auto-renewal date, and that date is not your expiration date. Your membership renews on the first day of the last month of your subscription. If your membership runs through June 30, the renewal charge posts on June 1, so auto-renewal needs to be off by May 31 at the latest.2SHRM. How to Manage Your SHRM Membership Auto-Renewal If you’re already inside that 24-hour window, call SHRM directly to stop the charge.

Cancel by Email or Phone

If you’d rather have someone handle it, or you’ve missed the online window, contact SHRM’s customer experience team:

  • Email: shrm@shrm.org

SHRM discontinued member ID numbers in July 2019 and now identifies members by the email address on file in MySHRM.4SHRM. What Is My SHRM Member ID Use that registered email when you write or call, along with your full name.

Keep an emailed request short: state that you want to cancel, include your registered email and full name, and ask for written confirmation that auto-renewal has been disabled. Save that confirmation in case a charge shows up on your card later.

Refunds and Transfers

SHRM membership is non-refundable and non-transferable.5SHRM. Can I Cancel or Transfer My Membership You won’t get a prorated refund for unused months, and you can’t hand the membership off to a coworker or replacement, even if your employer paid the dues. Access to member benefits continues through the end of the term you’ve already paid for; canceling just prevents the next annual charge.

What Happens When Your Membership Ends

Once your paid term expires without renewal, SHRM cuts off access to member-only resources: the online toolkit templates, compliance guides, salary benchmarking data, and members-only articles on shrm.org. You also lose the member rate on SHRM events, conferences, and educational programs.

Does Canceling Affect Your SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP?

No. Certification and membership are separate products, so dropping your membership does not erase your SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP credential. It stays valid as long as you meet recertification requirements. Recertification does cost more without a membership: members pay $165 for the processing fee versus $210 for nonmembers, and a missed recertification deadline runs $240 for members and $285 for nonmembers.6SHRM. SHRM Recertification Weigh that $45 fee gap against the $299 annual dues before assuming you need to keep membership only for the certification discount, and factor in whether you also use member pricing on SHRM’s continuing education catalog to earn professional development credits.
