You can’t cancel Spotify Premium from inside the Spotify mobile app itself. How to cancel Spotify on the app depends on who actually bills you: if you signed up on Spotify’s website, you cancel in a web browser on your account page; if you subscribed through the App Store, you cancel in your iPhone’s settings; if you subscribed through Google Play, you cancel there; and if Spotify came bundled with your phone plan or another service, you cancel with that provider. Picking the wrong path is the single most common reason people believe they’ve canceled and keep seeing charges.
Check Who’s Billing You First
Before you change any settings, look at the Spotify charge on your bank or credit card statement. The name on the line tells you where to cancel.
- “Spotify” on the statement means Spotify bills you directly. Cancel through the Spotify website.
- “Apple” or “apple.com/bill” means Apple handles the subscription. Cancel in iPhone Settings.
- “Google” or “GOOGLE*Spotify” means Google Play handles it. Cancel in the Play Store.
- No Spotify line at all, but you have Premium? You’re probably on a bundle through a carrier, internet provider, or student plan with Hulu. Cancel with whoever sold you the bundle.
Canceling on Spotify’s site does nothing if Apple, Google, or a carrier is the one collecting the payment.
Cancel When Spotify Bills You Directly
Open a web browser, on your phone or a computer, and go to spotify.com/account. You can also tap your profile icon inside the Spotify app and follow the account settings link, which opens a browser window. Then:
- Go to “Manage your plan” on the account overview page.
- Select “Cancel subscription” and follow the prompts.
Spotify will ask why you’re leaving and may offer a discount or a different plan before the final confirmation button appears. Click all the way through those screens, or the cancellation won’t register. Premium stays active until your next billing date, then the account switches to the free tier.1Spotify. Spotify also accepts cancellations through a form you complete and send to them, though the browser route is faster.1Spotify. How to Cancel Premium Plans
Cancel on iPhone When Apple Bills You
If you subscribed through the App Store, the subscription lives in Apple’s system, not Spotify’s. Cancel it in Settings:
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap your name at the top of the screen.
- Tap “Subscriptions.”
- Select Spotify from the list.
- Tap “Cancel Subscription.”
The subscription stays active through the end of the current billing period after you cancel.2Apple Support. If You Want to Cancel a Subscription From Apple You can reach the same list from the App Store app by tapping your profile icon and selecting “Subscriptions.”3Apple Support. Cancel on Android Through Google Play
If you signed up through Google Play, you cancel there. Open the Play Store app and:
- Tap your profile icon in the top right.
- Tap “Payments & subscriptions,” then “Subscriptions.”
- Select Spotify from the list.
- Tap “Cancel subscription” and confirm.
Premium stays on until the billing period ends. One warning: uninstalling the Spotify app does not cancel the subscription. The billing lives in Google’s system, so the charges keep coming until you cancel in the Play Store.
Bundles, Carriers, and Student-Plus-Hulu
If Spotify came as part of a package, the company that sold you the package controls the billing. Carrier-bundled plans through providers like T-Mobile or Sprint have to be canceled through the wireless provider directly, and these subscriptions often don’t even appear in Spotify’s account management page.2Apple Support. For the Spotify Premium Student plan that includes Hulu, cancellation runs through your Spotify account page. You can deactivate Hulu separately under “Your Services” without touching the Spotify side.4Hulu. Managing a Spotify-Billed Hulu Subscription
Can You Get a Refund?
Spotify generally doesn’t pro-rate refunds for partially used months. Cancel mid-cycle and you keep Premium until the cycle ends, but you don’t get money back for the unused days. There are two windows where a full refund is possible: within 14 days of your first purchase if you haven’t used the service, and within 7 days of any later monthly payment if you haven’t used the service during that period.5Spotify. Cancellation and Refund Policy
This is the escape hatch for a forgotten free trial that converted to a paid plan. Catch it quickly and skip the streaming, and you have a shot at the money back.
What Happens After the Cancellation Takes Effect
Once your paid period ends, the account switches to the free, ad-supported version. You lose on-demand playback on mobile (most playlists go shuffle-only on phones), any songs saved for offline listening disappear from the device, skips are capped at six per hour on mobile, mobile streaming quality drops to a maximum of 160 kbit/s, and ads return in both audio and visual form.
Your playlists, saved library, listening history, and recommendations all stay intact.1Spotify. How to Cancel Premium Plans That data only goes away if you delete the entire Spotify account, which is a separate and permanent step.
One note if you’re the account holder on a Family or Duo plan: canceling drops every account on the plan to the free tier at the end of the billing period, so give the other members a warning if they want to keep Premium on their own.1Spotify. How to Cancel Premium Plans
