To cancel Spotify Premium and get a refund, you cancel through whichever service originally billed you, then make a separate refund request to that same party. If you signed up directly with Spotify, both steps go through Spotify. If you subscribed through Apple or Google Play, both steps go through them. Canceling stops future charges; a refund for a charge you’ve already paid is a separate request and is reviewed case by case.
Cancel a Subscription You Signed Up for Directly With Spotify
You can’t cancel inside the Spotify mobile app. Use a web browser.
- Go to spotify.com/account and log in.
- Scroll to “Your plan” and click “Manage your plan.”
- Select “Cancel subscription” and confirm.
Premium stays active until the end of your current billing period, then the account drops to the free, ad-supported tier.1Spotify. How to Cancel Premium Plans Playlists, saved songs, and followed artists all stay on your account. You lose offline downloads, since those are Premium-only.
Not sure where you signed up? Check “Your plan” on your Spotify account page. It names your billing partner.
Cancel if You Subscribed Through Apple or Google Play
If Apple or Google is your billing partner, Spotify can’t cancel for you. The platform controls the billing and the payment information. Canceling inside the Spotify app or on spotify.com won’t stop the charges in this case, which is the single most common reason people keep getting billed after they think they’ve canceled.
Apple App Store
Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad, tap your name at the top, then tap “Subscriptions.” Find Spotify, tap it, and tap “Cancel Subscription.”2Apple Support. If You Want to Cancel a Subscription From Apple If there’s no cancel button and you see an expiration date in red instead, the subscription is already canceled.
Google Play Store
Open the Google Play app on your Android device, go to your subscriptions, select Spotify, and tap “Cancel subscription.”3Google Play Help. Cancel, Pause, or Change a Subscription on Google Play You can also reach the same controls through your device Settings under Google, then Payments and subscriptions.
What Happens After You Cancel
For a paid subscription, Premium runs until the next billing date, then the account becomes free. Your library stays intact. You lose downloads for offline listening and ads come back.1Spotify. How to Cancel Premium Plans
Free trials behave differently. If you cancel during a free trial with no payment attached, Premium ends immediately rather than carrying through the rest of the trial window.4Spotify. Refund Policy If you want the full trial, wait until closer to the end before canceling.
On Family and Duo plans, when the plan manager cancels, every member loses Premium at the end of the billing period and reverts to the free tier. Members’ playlists and saved music stay; downloads and ad-free listening go. Members can’t stop the cancellation and don’t need to do anything on their end. Anyone who wants to keep Premium has to start their own plan.1Spotify. How to Cancel Premium Plans
Request a Refund From Spotify
Canceling stops future charges. It doesn’t return anything already paid. For that, contact Spotify’s support team.
Spotify reviews each refund request on a case-by-case basis at its discretion, unless local law requires otherwise.5Spotify. Refund Policy for Purchased Top-Ups There’s no guaranteed approval, no published deadline for when a request has to be filed, and no fixed response time. Have your account email and payment details ready.
Two things Spotify won’t refund: gift cards bought from a retail store, which have to go back to the store, and Premium payments billed through a partner such as Apple or Google. For those, you request the refund from the partner.4Spotify. Refund Policy
EU 14-Day Right of Withdrawal
Subscribers in the European Union have a 14-day cooling-off period under EU consumer rules that lets them cancel an online service contract without a reason. The right doesn’t apply to digital content you’ve already started streaming or downloading after expressly agreeing to waive the withdrawal right.6Your Europe. Returns and the Right of Withdrawal – Section: Right of Withdrawal a 14-Day Cooling-Off Period Because most people start listening the moment they sign up, this protection is useful mainly if you subscribed and haven’t used the service yet.
Refunds for Apple and Google Play Subscriptions
If Apple billed you, request the refund from Apple. Go to reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in with your Apple ID, choose “Request a refund,” pick a reason, and select the Spotify charge from your purchase history. Apple says to allow 24 to 48 hours for an update.7Apple Support. Request a Refund for Apps or Content That You Bought From Apple
For Google Play, Google runs its own refund request process through its support pages, with its own criteria and timelines.
Gift Cards and Prepaid Plans
Once a Spotify gift card is redeemed to an account, it generally can’t be exchanged for cash, returned, or resold. The full value applies at redemption and can’t be split across accounts or partially refunded. The only exception is where local law specifically requires cash redemption.8Spotify. Gift Card Terms and Conditions
If you paid with a gift card or prepaid code, your subscription runs until the prepaid balance is used up rather than on a recurring monthly cycle. Canceling early doesn’t produce a prorated refund of the time remaining. Premium continues until the prepaid time expires, then the account becomes free.
Don’t File a Bank Chargeback
If an unexpected charge is frustrating, calling your bank to dispute it can seem like the fast path. It isn’t. Spotify treats chargebacks as suspected fraud and permanently disables the account, and it won’t re-enable the account afterward.9Spotify. Spotify Disabled Accounts
That means losing every playlist you’ve built, your listening history, your followers, and your username. If someone used a gift card on your account and the purchaser later charges it back, your account takes the hit too. On a Family plan, the manager’s account gets disabled and the other members drop to free.9Spotify. Spotify Disabled Accounts Work through Spotify’s support or the billing platform’s refund process first. A chargeback is a last resort.
