To cancel a Spotify Premium subscription on an iPhone or Android phone, first check who bills you, then cancel through that specific channel. If Spotify bills you directly, you’ll use a web browser on your phone. If Apple or Google collects the payment, you’ll cancel inside your device’s settings. Canceling through the wrong channel is the single most common reason people keep getting charged after they thought they were done.
Check Who Bills You First
Open the Spotify app, tap your profile icon, then tap Account. Under your plan details, you’ll see one of a few billing setups: billed by Spotify, billed through the App Store, billed through Google Play, or billed through a partner like a phone carrier or a bundle with another service.
This matters because Spotify can’t cancel a subscription it doesn’t bill. If Apple collects your money each month, Spotify’s own cancellation page has no power to stop the charges. You have to go to the source.
If Spotify Bills You Directly
You cannot cancel a Spotify-billed subscription inside the mobile app. Spotify sends you to its website instead. In your phone’s browser, go to spotify.com/account, log in, and look for Manage your plan. Select Cancel subscription and follow the confirmation prompts. Premium stays active until the end of your current billing cycle, then your account switches to the free, ad-supported tier.1Spotify. How to Cancel Premium Plans
If the web page gives you trouble on mobile, Spotify also lets you download a cancellation form from your account page and submit it directly. It’s slower but works when the site doesn’t cooperate.1Spotify. How to Cancel Premium Plans
If You’re on iPhone and Apple Bills You
When the App Store handles your subscription, there’s no cancel option inside the Spotify app or on Spotify’s website. Open the Settings app on your iPhone, tap your name at the top, then tap Subscriptions. Find Spotify in the list, tap it, and select Cancel Subscription.2Apple Support. See Your Purchases and Subscriptions in the App Store on iPhone
Deleting the Spotify app does not stop the charges. Apple keeps billing you whether or not the app is installed. Only the Settings path above actually cancels the subscription.
If You’re on Android and Google Play Bills You
Open the Google Play Store app, tap your profile icon, go to Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions. Find Spotify, tap it, and choose Cancel subscription. Follow the prompts.3Google Play Help. Cancel, Pause, or Change a Subscription on Google Play
You can also get there through your device’s Settings app: tap Google, your name, Manage your Google Account, then Payments & subscriptions. Both routes lead to the same screen. As with Apple, uninstalling the Spotify app will not cancel your subscription.3Google Play Help. Cancel, Pause, or Change a Subscription on Google Play
If Your Subscription Came Through a Partner
If your Spotify Premium came bundled through a mobile carrier, internet provider, or another streaming service, neither Spotify nor your phone’s app store can cancel it. Contact the partner directly.
The Spotify Premium Student plan that includes Hulu is a slight variation: students manage the Hulu portion through their Spotify account page under Your Services and can deactivate it separately there, but canceling Spotify itself still follows the standard steps for whoever bills you.4Hulu. If no cancel option appears anywhere and your account page lists a partner you don’t recognize, check your bank or credit card statement to see who’s actually charging you. That company is who you need to contact.
Family, Duo, and Student Plans
On a Family or Duo plan, only the plan manager (the person who set it up and pays) can cancel the subscription. Invited members can leave the plan, but they can’t stop the billing. If you’re the plan manager and you cancel, every member loses Premium at the next billing date and drops to a free account. Warn your household first.1Spotify. Student plan subscribers get the discount for up to four years total and need to re-verify enrollment annually. If you cancel and later resubscribe, you can get the student rate again by re-verifying your eligibility. A break doesn’t permanently kill the discount.6Spotify. Renew Premium Student
Canceling During a Free Trial
Canceling during a free trial ends Premium access immediately. Unlike a paid subscription, which runs through the end of the cycle you already paid for, a trial cancellation drops you to the free tier right away.7Spotify. Refund Policy
So you can’t start a trial, cancel on day one to be safe, and still enjoy the rest of it. To use the whole trial, set a reminder and cancel near the end. Don’t cut it too close either: if the trial expires before you cancel, you’ll be billed $12.99 for the first month.
What Happens After You Cancel
Spotify does not offer pro-rated refunds. Your Premium features stay active until the end of the current billing period you’ve already paid for, then your account switches to the free tier.7Spotify. Refund Policy
Once that switch happens:
- Your playlists and saved music stay in your library.
- Downloaded tracks become unavailable, so you’ll need Wi-Fi or data to stream.
- Audio quality drops and ads play between tracks.
- On mobile, free-tier playback restrictions apply to how you can play certain content.
If Apple or Google billed you rather than Spotify, Spotify cannot issue a refund at all. Refund requests have to go through Apple or Google.7Spotify. Refund Policy
Confirm the Cancellation Went Through
After you finish the steps, your account page should display a specific date when Premium expires. If that date is there, you’re done. If the page still shows an active, renewing subscription, something didn’t register and you’ll need to try again.1Spotify. How to Cancel Premium Plans
Check your next bank or credit card statement to confirm no additional charge appeared, especially if you canceled close to your renewal date. Payment processors sometimes batch charges a day or two before the listed billing date. If an unexpected charge shows up after you canceled, dispute it with whoever billed you: Spotify, Apple, or Google.
Canceling Is Not the Same as Deleting Your Account
Canceling your subscription stops the payments and drops you to the free tier, but your account, playlists, and listening history all remain. Deleting your account permanently wipes everything: username, playlists, followers, and saved music are gone.8Spotify. Closing Your Account and Deleting Your Data
Deleting your account also does not automatically cancel a subscription billed through Apple or Google. If you delete the account without first canceling through the correct billing channel, you can end up paying every month for a service tied to an account that no longer exists. Cancel the subscription first, confirm the charges have stopped, and only then decide whether to delete the account.8Spotify. Closing Your Account and Deleting Your Data
