How to Cancel Tesla FSD Subscription: App and Touchscreen Steps

To cancel your Tesla FSD subscription, open the Tesla app, select your vehicle, tap Upgrades, then Manage, then Full Self-Driving (Supervised), and tap Cancel Subscription. The whole thing takes about 30 seconds. You keep FSD features through the end of the 30-day period you’ve already paid for, and Tesla does not issue prorated refunds.

Canceling in the Tesla App

Log in with the account tied to the vehicle’s primary owner profile. If you have more than one Tesla on the account, pick the right car from the home screen first.

  • Open the Tesla app and select your vehicle.
  • Tap Upgrades, then Manage, then Full Self-Driving (Supervised).
  • Tap Cancel Subscription and confirm.

Once you confirm, the app sends a notification that the subscription will not renew at the next billing cycle. Screenshot it as your receipt.

Canceling From the Car’s Touchscreen

You can also cancel from the vehicle itself. Go into the software or upgrades section of the touchscreen menu, find your FSD subscription, and follow the prompts. This is the path to use if the mobile app isn’t cooperating or you don’t have it installed.

What Happens After You Cancel

Cancellation doesn’t cut off FSD immediately. Your features stay active until the end of the 30-day billing period you’ve already paid for, and the expiration date shows up under the Manage tab once the cancellation processes.

When that period ends, the car reverts to its standard driver-assistance package. You lose FSD-specific capabilities like automated lane changes on highways, traffic light and stop sign response, and Navigate on Autopilot. Basic Autopilot stays put, including traffic-aware cruise control and autosteer within a single lane, because those come standard and don’t require a subscription.

There are no prorated refunds. Cancel on day 5 of a 30-day cycle and you don’t get 25 days back. You paid for the month, you get the month, and it simply doesn’t renew. So there’s no financial reason to rush the cancellation, and no reason to wait either.

If the Cancel Button Won’t Work

A few problems come up often enough to plan for.

Sometimes tapping Manage under Upgrades leads to a billing details page instead of a cancellation screen. Owners have gotten past this by tapping into the billing information section and saving the details without changing anything, which refreshes the interface and reveals the cancel option.

Tesla’s servers also throw occasional 500 errors that block subscription changes. These usually clear within minutes, though they can drag on for hours. One important warning: do not sign out of the Tesla app, delete it, or reinstall it while a server error is active. Doing that can make your vehicle disappear from the account, and getting it back requires calling Tesla’s lockout support line. Wait the error out and try again.

Tesla’s web portal has historically been less reliable than the app for subscription management. If the website is fighting you, switch to the mobile app or the car’s touchscreen.

Re-Subscribing Later

Canceling isn’t permanent. You can re-subscribe through the same app or touchscreen any time, and based on owner reports, FSD features typically reactivate immediately without a separate software download. A new 30-day billing cycle starts the moment you subscribe again.

That flexibility is useful if you’re canceling for months when you mostly drive short local routes and don’t need highway automation. There’s no waiting period keeping you out.

Selling the Car

The FSD subscription is tied to your account and your specific vehicle, and it does not transfer to a new owner. If you sell mid-cycle, the subscription stays active on the car until the period ends, but the buyer can’t inherit it or take over payments. They have to start their own subscription through their own Tesla account after the ownership transfer completes. And if you’re the one buying a used Tesla, don’t assume FSD comes with the car because the seller had it active; you’ll need to subscribe separately at the current $99 monthly rate.
