How to Cancel The Athletic Subscription: Web, Apple, and Google Play

How you cancel The Athletic subscription depends on who is actually charging you. If you signed up directly on The Athletic’s site or through The New York Times, you cancel in your account settings on the NYT website. If you subscribed on an iPhone or iPad, you cancel through Apple. If you signed up on an Android device, you cancel in Google Play. Canceling on the wrong platform won’t stop the charges.

Check Who’s Billing You First

Pull up a recent bank or credit card statement and read the charge description. “The Athletic” or “NYTimes” means direct billing, so you’ll cancel on the website. “Apple.com/bill” means the subscription runs through the App Store. “Google Play” means it runs through Android.

If the statement isn’t handy, search your email for a confirmation or renewal receipt from The Athletic, Apple, or Google. The sender tells you which route to take.

Cancel on The Athletic or New York Times Website

For direct subscribers, log in on the website, open “Subscription Overview,” select the option to cancel, and follow the prompts.1The New York Times Help Center. Cancel Your Subscription Expect a retention offer before the final screen, often a discounted annual rate. If you want out, keep clicking until you see a confirmation. One click on “cancel” isn’t the end of the flow when alternative plans appear next.

The Athletic is included with New York Times Home Delivery and All Access bundles.2The New York Times Help Center. Cancel Your Subscription Canceling the bundle ends access to every Times product, not only The Athletic. If you want to keep the news side and drop sports, contact customer support about a plan that excludes it.

Cancel Through Apple

If you subscribed in the App Store, Apple is billing you and The Athletic’s website can’t stop the charges. On your iPhone or iPad, open Settings, tap your name, tap “Subscriptions,” select The Athletic, and tap “Cancel Subscription.”3Apple Support. If You Want to Cancel a Subscription From Apple If there’s no cancel button and you see an expiration date in red, the subscription is already canceled.

Cancel Through Google Play

Android subscribers cancel in the Play Store. Open the app, tap your profile icon, go to “Payments & Subscriptions,” select The Athletic, tap “Cancel subscription,” and follow the prompts.4Google Play Help. Cancel, Pause, or Change a Subscription on Google Play

Deleting the app does not cancel the subscription. That’s the single most common mistake, and it leads to months of charges for a service you thought you stopped.

Cancel by Phone or Chat

If you want to talk to a person, New York Times customer care handles Athletic subscriptions at 866-273-3612 or through live chat on the NYT help page. Support is open 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern on weekdays and 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Eastern on weekends and holidays.1The New York Times Help Center. Cancel Your Subscription This only works for direct subscribers. Apple and Google Play accounts still have to be canceled on those platforms.

What Happens After You Cancel

You keep full access through the end of the billing period you already paid for. Cancel on the 3rd when your renewal date is the 15th, and you can read everything until the 15th. After that, the account drops to limited access.4Google Play Help. Cancel, Pause, or Change a Subscription on Google Play

A confirmation email should land in your inbox. Save it. If a charge posts after your cancellation date, that email is your evidence when you dispute it.

If You’re Charged After Canceling

Start with The Athletic’s customer support, or with Apple or Google if that’s who billed you. Most post-cancellation charges get sorted out at that stage.

If that fails and the charge is on a credit card, federal law gives you 60 days from the date the statement was sent to dispute a billing error in writing with your card issuer.5Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1666 – Correction of Billing Errors Send the letter to the billing inquiry address on the statement, not the payment address. Include your name, account number, the amount, and why it’s an error. Certified mail with a return receipt gives you a paper trail. For debit card charges, your bank’s dispute process applies, and the window for limiting your liability is tighter, so report unauthorized charges as soon as you spot them.

Retention Offers to Expect

Introductory pricing on The Athletic is currently $2 per month or $20 for the first year, and standard annual renewal is $72.6The New York Times. If the price is the problem, starting the cancellation is the most reliable way to see what’s available. Either accept the offer or push through to a confirmation screen.
