To cancel an Unbound sponsorship, contact the Sponsor Support team by phone, email, or mail and tell them you want to end your monthly contributions. There are no fees, penalties, or contract terms to work around. Unbound only asks that you give notice so staff can start looking for a new sponsor for your friend.
Three Ways To Reach Sponsor Support
Calling is the fastest option. The Sponsor Support line is 800-875-6564, staffed Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Central time.
If you want a written record, email mail@unbound.org with your full name, Member ID, and a clear statement that you are ending your sponsorship.1Unbound. Contact Us Save a copy of the message in case you need to confirm the cancellation later.
You can also send a letter to:

Put your Member ID and your sponsored friend’s identification number at the top of the letter. Mail is the slowest route, so if a payment is about to post, call or email instead.
What To Have Ready
Every sponsor has a unique Member ID that Unbound uses to track your account, payment history, and tax receipts. You will also want the name or ID number of the person you sponsor, especially if you support more than one individual. Both appear on your monthly billing statements, annual progress reports, and your online account.
Can’t find your Member ID? Call Sponsor Support. A representative can look you up by name and verify your identity with other account details.
What Happens to Your Sponsored Friend
Unbound’s FAQ is direct on this: when you discontinue a sponsorship, the organization begins searching for a new sponsor, and your friend continues receiving benefits in the meantime.3Unbound. Frequently Asked Questions: Sponsorship Educational support, healthcare assistance, and community programs do not stop the day your last payment processes.
How quickly a new sponsor is found depends on donor demand, but Unbound prioritizes individuals who recently lost their support. If you’d like to send a farewell message before you cancel, Unbound’s correspondence program allows for that; ask the Sponsor Support team how it works when you reach out.
Keep Your Donation Records
Unbound is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, so the contributions you made before canceling are tax-deductible as allowed by law.4Unbound. Financial Disclosures – Unbound Hold on to your bank or credit card statements showing each payment, along with any receipts or acknowledgment letters from Unbound. The IRS requires at least one of these records for every cash contribution you claim, and donations of $250 or more need a written acknowledgment from the organization itself.5IRS. Publication 526 (2025), Charitable Contributions
Keep those records for at least three years after filing the return that includes the contributions. That covers the standard IRS audit window and protects you if a return is ever questioned.
