To cancel a Varsity Tutors membership, call member services at (800) 803-4058 and follow up in writing to member.services@varsitytutors.com, because the account dashboard has no self-service cancel button. Varsity Tutors’ terms state that all fees are nonrefundable and that purchases cannot be canceled by the user except as required by law, so speed and documentation matter more here than with most subscription services.1Varsity Tutors. Why There Is No Cancel Button in Your Account
Subscribers routinely open the account portal expecting a cancellation option and don’t find one. There isn’t one. The only ways to end your membership are phone and email, which is why so many people report being charged again after they thought they had canceled. If you signed up online but can only cancel by calling during business hours, that friction is the reason to keep a careful record of every attempt.
The FTC’s Click-to-Cancel rule, finalized in late 2024, requires subscription sellers to make canceling at least as easy as signing up.2Federal Trade Commission. Federal Trade Commission Announces Final Click-to-Cancel Rule More on how to use that below.
Step by Step: How to Cancel
Call Member Services
The student and parent line is (800) 803-4058.3Varsity Tutors. Contact Us – Varsity Tutors for Schools Say clearly that you want to cancel your membership and stop all future billing. Before you hang up, ask for a confirmation number or reference ID. Write down the representative’s name, the date, and the time. If you get stuck on hold or the call drops, call back and log that too. A log of your attempts is what protects you if a later charge lands on your card.
Send an Email You Can Timestamp
After the call, email member.services@varsitytutors.com. Include your full name, the student’s name if different, the email on the account, and a plain statement that you are canceling effective immediately. Ask for written confirmation that the account is closed and that no further charges will be processed. That email gives you a dated record independent of anything the phone rep did or didn’t note in the system.
Send a Certified Letter If You Need a Stronger Record
For the strongest paper trail, send a certified letter with return receipt to Varsity Tutors’ corporate office at 101 S. Hanley Rd., Suite 300, St. Louis, MO 63105.4State of California Department of Justice – Office of the Attorney General. Varsity Tutors – Sample Notice This step matters most when a charge has already hit your card after a phone cancellation, or when your email has gone unanswered. The return receipt proves delivery.
If You Signed Up Through Apple or Google, Cancel There Too
If you originally subscribed through the Apple App Store or Google Play, the app store is billing you, not Varsity Tutors directly. You have to cancel in your phone’s subscription settings as well as contact the company. Canceling only with Varsity Tutors won’t stop app-store charges, and canceling only in the app store may not close your Varsity Tutors account.
Canceling a Session Is Not Canceling Your Membership
These are two different actions and mixing them up is the most common reason charges keep coming. A session cancellation happens inside your account’s scheduling feature: log in, find the session, remove it. Do it at least 24 hours before the start time. Late cancellations inside that window can be billed for the full length of the scheduled session.
Ending your membership means ending the billing relationship, which only the phone-and-email process does. Canceling a single session does not stop your monthly charges. Neither does simply not booking anything for a month. Recurring billing runs until you explicitly cancel it.
What You Can and Cannot Get Back
Varsity Tutors’ terms state that all fees are nonrefundable and that purchases cannot be canceled by the user except as required by law.1Varsity Tutors. Terms of Use Do not expect a prorated refund for unused hours if you cancel mid-cycle.
There is a narrow Tutor Satisfaction Guarantee. If you’re unhappy with your assigned tutor after the first session, calling gets you matched with someone new and your next session (up to two hours) is free. It’s a tutor swap, not a refund.5Varsity Tutors. Our Guarantee
A separate Pass Guarantee applies to professional certification exam prep purchased on or after May 15, 2024. If you buy at least 12 hours of one-on-one tutoring, use them within three months before your exam, complete all assignments, take the test within 14 days of your last session, and submit your score within 14 days of the release date, you can request either a credit or a full refund if you don’t pass. The request has to be made within six months of purchase.5Varsity Tutors. Our Guarantee The eligibility conditions are strict; read them before assuming you qualify.
Knowing your plan price also helps you spot rogue charges. Monthly learning memberships start at $299 for a plan that includes eight hours of tutoring and unlimited live classes, with a higher tier at $480; custom programs vary.6Varsity Tutors. Learning Membership If a post-cancellation charge shows up, match it against these amounts to see which plan is still active.
If You’re Still Being Charged After Canceling
Call (800) 803-4058 again, reference your original cancellation date and any confirmation details, and ask for an immediate refund of the post-cancellation charge. Log that call the way you logged the first one.3Varsity Tutors. Contact Us – Varsity Tutors for Schools
If that doesn’t work, dispute the charge with your credit card issuer. Under the Fair Credit Billing Act, you have 60 days from the date the bill containing the error was sent to you to submit a written dispute to your issuer’s billing inquiries address. Your letter needs your name, account number, and an explanation of why the charge is wrong. Send it certified mail with return receipt. The issuer has to acknowledge the dispute within 30 days and resolve it within two billing cycles, and no more than 90 days.7Office of the Law Revision Counsel. US Code Title 15 – Section 1666
You can also file a complaint with the FTC at ftc.gov/complaint or with your state attorney general’s consumer protection division. Those complaints don’t directly recover money, but they add to a regulatory record.
Using the FTC Click-to-Cancel Rule as Leverage
The FTC’s amended Negative Option Rule, published in the Federal Register in November 2024, requires subscription sellers to offer a cancellation method at least as simple as the signup method. If you enrolled online, the company must let you cancel online. If you signed up by phone, the company must answer cancellation calls promptly during normal business hours. The rule also bars companies from forcing you to speak with a live representative to cancel if you didn’t speak with one to sign up.8Federal Register. Negative Option Rule Most provisions took effect 180 days after publication.2Federal Trade Commission. Federal Trade Commission Announces Final Click-to-Cancel Rule
If you signed up on the Varsity Tutors website but are being told you can only cancel by phone, cite this rule in your call and in your written request. It also gives you a concrete basis for an FTC complaint if the company won’t comply.
Keep Records of Everything
Save the original purchase agreement or welcome email, screenshots of your account dashboard showing no cancel option, your cancellation email and any reply, the confirmation number from the phone call, certified mail receipts, and card statements from before and after your cancellation date. If it comes to a billing dispute or chargeback, that documentation is what separates a successful claim from a denied one.
