How to Cancel Verizon Wireless: Steps, Fees, and Final Bill

To cancel Verizon Wireless, sign into My Verizon and open a chat with “Cancel” as your first message, or call customer service at 800-922-0204. The disconnection itself takes about 15 minutes. The money side takes longer, and getting the sequence right matters: device payment balances, lost promotional credits, and unreturned equipment fees can add hundreds of dollars to your final bill if you cancel before checking them.

What to Gather Before You Cancel

Find your account number at the top of your paper bill or under the account overview in My Verizon. You’ll also need your four-digit Account PIN, which Verizon uses to verify you as the account owner. If you’ve forgotten it, the account owner can reset it through the My Verizon app before calling.1Verizon. Verizon Mobile Account PIN FAQs

Open the “Devices” section of your bill or the app and look for any active Device Payment Agreements. These are retail installment contracts, and closing your account triggers the remaining balance on your next bill.2Verizon. Device Payment Agreement FAQs Someone 10 months into a 36-month phone agreement could still owe several hundred dollars. Knowing the number ahead of time prevents a surprise.

Take inventory of perks bundled with your plan, like Disney+ or Apple Music. These end when your account closes, and some services will try to convert the access into a direct-billed paid subscription. Log into each one separately to confirm what happens after Verizon stops covering it.

If You’re Keeping Your Number, Don’t Call to Cancel

Switching carriers and porting your number does the disconnection for you. Once the port completes, Verizon closes the line at the end of your billing cycle. Your new carrier handles the transfer once you give them your Verizon account number and a Number Transfer PIN.

The Number Transfer PIN is not the same as your Account PIN. Generate it in My Verizon under the line’s device information. Each PIN is unique to one line, stays valid for seven days, and can be generated up to five times per line in a day.3Verizon. Port Out My Number If it expires before the new carrier finishes, generate another one.

If you don’t need the number anymore, contact Verizon directly.

Canceling Through Chat or Phone

Verizon offers two paths to disconnect a line or close the whole account:4Verizon. How to Disconnect a Mobile Line or Close Your Mobile Phone Account FAQs

  • Sign into My Verizon, select “Chat with us,” type “Cancel,” and follow the prompts. You can complete it through the automated flow or ask for a live agent.
  • Call 800-922-0204 and choose the options for disconnecting service. Have the account owner’s name, phone number, and Account PIN ready. The last four digits of the account owner’s Social Security number can substitute for the PIN.

The representative will offer discounts or plan changes to keep you. If you’ve decided, decline and ask them to proceed. Get a confirmation number before you hang up, and note the date and time of the call. That confirmation is your proof if a billing dispute comes up later.

Device Payments and Promotional Credits Are the Real Cost

This is where canceling Verizon gets expensive. Disconnecting a line with an active Device Payment Agreement makes the entire remaining balance due on your next bill.2Verizon. Device Payment Agreement FAQs The agreement treats terminating service as a default event that gives Verizon the right to require immediate payment of the full remaining amount.5Verizon Wireless. Device Payment Agreement

The damage compounds if you’re receiving monthly promotional credits from a trade-in. Those credits are tied to keeping the line active. Cancel and they stop immediately. They do not get applied as a lump sum against your remaining device balance. Trade in an old phone for $800 in credits spread over 36 months, cancel at month 12, and you lose the remaining 24 months of credits while still owing the full device balance. For anyone who stacked a trade-in promotion on top of a financed device, this can easily mean paying $500 or more out of pocket.

Look at both the “Device Payment” line and the “Promotional Credits” line on your bill. The difference is what you actually pay each month. Cancellation erases the credit side.

Returning Home Internet Equipment

Your phones are yours, paid off or not. Home internet hardware is not. If you have a 5G Home Internet gateway, router, or Wi-Fi extender, Verizon owns it and expects it back within 30 days of disconnecting service.6Verizon. Verizon Home Internet (Wireless) Equipment Return FAQs

Miss the 30-day window and unreturned equipment fees apply. Charges vary by device but top out at $300 for most gateways and receivers, and $175 for Wi-Fi extenders.6Verizon. Verizon Home Internet (Wireless) Equipment Return FAQs Verizon provides prepaid shipping labels or QR codes through authorized shipping partners. Keep the tracking number until you confirm the return has been processed.

How the Final Bill Works

Your final bill arrives on your regular billing date after the disconnection takes effect. If your disconnect falls close to your normal bill date, a standard bill may generate before the official final statement.7Verizon. Verizon Home and Fios – Final Bill, Deposits, and Refunds FAQs

Here’s the catch: Verizon Wireless does not prorate the final billing cycle. If your cycle runs from the 5th to the 4th and you cancel on the 10th, you still pay for the entire cycle through the 4th. No partial credit. Starting a new billing cycle even one day before canceling means paying for the full month, so time your cancellation accordingly.

The final statement will include any remaining device balances, unreturned equipment fees, and the last month of service. Pay it on time. Unpaid balances can be sent to collections and reported to the credit bureaus after the account is closed.

Early Termination Fees

Most current Verizon wireless plans have no service contract, which means no early termination fee for canceling a line. The financial hit comes from device payment acceleration and lost promotional credits, not from the plan itself.

Certain standalone service plans include a 24-month commitment and carry a prorated early termination fee of up to $165 if you disconnect before the commitment ends. You can cancel within the first 30 days without penalty.8Verizon. Standalone Terms of Service If you’re not sure whether your plan has a commitment, check the plan details in My Verizon or ask the representative before they process the disconnection.

Prepaid Accounts Cancel Themselves

Prepaid works differently. There’s no ongoing contract, so a prepaid line disconnects automatically at the end of whatever service period you’ve already paid for if you simply stop adding funds. No call or chat needed. If you’ve already paid for an upcoming cycle and want to close the account immediately, contact customer service. Prepaid customers keeping their number should port it before the balance expires, since the number can be released once the account deactivates.

Special Situations

Active-Duty Military Orders

The Servicemembers Civil Relief Act lets military members cancel wireless contracts without early termination fees when they receive orders relocating them for 90 days or longer to a location that doesn’t support the contract.9Office of the Law Revision Counsel. US Code Title 50 – 3956 Termination of Certain Consumer Contracts The contract must have been signed before you received the orders.

Give Verizon written or electronic notice, a copy of your military orders, and the date you want service terminated. Verizon cannot charge early termination fees and must refund any advance payments within 60 days, minus charges for the partial cycle through your termination date. If your relocation is three years or less, you can reclaim your original phone number by resubscribing within 90 days of returning.10Federal Communications Commission. When the Account Holder Has Died

An account member or authorized family member can disconnect a line or close the account by visiting a Verizon corporate store with a death certificate or executor paperwork.11Verizon. What to Do When Someone on Your Mobile Account Passes Away You can also call customer service, though you may be asked to upload the death certificate through a transfer or disconnect form.

If other lines on the account need to stay active, Verizon can transfer account ownership to a surviving family member instead of closing everything. Have documentation ready either way. The process requires identity verification for both the deceased account holder and the person making the request.
