To cancel an Xbox Game Pass subscription, sign in at account.microsoft.com/services with the Microsoft account tied to your Xbox, find the Game Pass plan under your services, click Manage, and choose the cancel option. The whole thing takes about two minutes. Your access continues through the end of the billing period you’ve already paid for, so there’s no need to rush a final session before you cancel.1Microsoft Support. Cancel Your Microsoft Subscription
Cancel Through a Web Browser
This is the fastest route and works from any device. Go to account.microsoft.com/services and sign in with the Microsoft account you used to set up Xbox or buy the subscription. Your active subscriptions appear in a list. Find your Game Pass plan and click Manage next to it.
Microsoft will walk you through a few screens explaining what you’ll lose and may offer a discounted rate to stay. Click through until you reach the final confirmation. Once confirmed, the status changes from Active to an expiration date, and no further charges will hit your payment method.2Microsoft Support. Change Your Microsoft Subscription Payment Method and Options
Microsoft sends a confirmation email. Save it. If a charge you don’t expect shows up later, that email is your proof the cancellation went through. It’s worth reloading your subscription dashboard one more time to confirm the status reflects the change.
Cancel on an Xbox Console
If you’d rather handle it from the couch, you can cancel directly on your Xbox Series X, Series S, or Xbox One. Go to Profile & system, then Settings, then Account, and open the Subscriptions menu. Select your Game Pass subscription, choose Cancel subscription, and follow the prompts to confirm.3Xbox Support. Xbox Subscription Cancellations and Refunds
The console gives you the same two outcomes as the browser: a full cancellation or turning off recurring billing. Either way, access continues through the current paid period and no future charges post. A confirmation screen summarizes what you did and when access ends.
Cancel on Your Phone
There is no dedicated cancellation feature in the Xbox mobile app. Open your phone’s web browser instead, go to account.microsoft.com/services, sign in, and use the same steps as the browser method above. The mobile version of the site works the same as desktop.1Microsoft Support. Cancel Your Microsoft Subscription
One important exception. If you originally signed up for Game Pass through the Apple App Store or Google Play Store, Microsoft’s website can’t cancel it. You have to cancel through the store you purchased it from. On an iPhone or iPad, go to Settings, tap your name, tap Subscriptions, find Xbox Game Pass, and tap Cancel Subscription.4Apple Support. If You Want to Cancel a Subscription From Apple On Android, open the Google Play Store app, tap your profile icon, go to Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions, and cancel Game Pass from there.
What Happens After You Cancel
Canceling doesn’t cut your access immediately. You keep all Game Pass benefits until the end of your current billing period. If you paid on the 5th and cancel on the 18th, your access still runs to the following 5th. The same holds for prepaid retail codes: canceling stops auto-renewal but doesn’t shorten time you already paid for.
Once that period ends, you lose access to the Game Pass library. Any game you downloaded through Game Pass but didn’t buy separately will stop launching. Games you bought outright are still yours. Your saved data stays on the console and in the cloud, so if you resubscribe later, you can pick up where you left off.
If you had Game Pass Ultimate, you also lose the online multiplayer access it includes, along with cloud gaming and any active EA Play benefits. Worth remembering if you play online-only titles.
Requesting a Refund
Canceling stops future charges. It does not automatically return money for the current period. A refund is a separate request. Go to the Xbox refund request page at support.xbox.com, sign in, and select the specific transaction you want refunded.5Xbox Support. Request a Refund for Digital Games
Approval isn’t guaranteed. Microsoft weighs how long ago the charge posted and how much you’ve used the service during that billing cycle. Requests submitted shortly after the charge are more likely to succeed than requests submitted weeks later. If approved, the money returns to whatever payment method was originally charged. Microsoft says refunds may take several business days or longer to appear, so check with your bank if you don’t see it right away.
One point that catches people out: if you bought a prepaid Game Pass code at a store or received one as a gift, canceling turns off auto-renewal but doesn’t refund the prepaid balance. Access simply runs through the end of the prepaid period.
If You Can’t Sign In to Cancel
Microsoft’s cancellation flow requires you to sign in, so if you’re locked out while still being billed, you need to recover the account first. Start with Microsoft’s sign-in helper, which walks you through identity verification using your phone number, recovery email, or security questions.6Microsoft Support. Microsoft Account Has Been Locked
If your account was locked because of suspicious activity, Microsoft requires a reinstatement form. A support agent will review it and reach out by email. Don’t submit multiple requests, as that slows the process. Support agents cannot reset your password or change account details directly; recovery has to run through the formal verification steps.
If account recovery fails entirely and you’re being charged on a credit card, contact your bank. Most banks can block future recurring charges from a specific merchant. This won’t cancel the subscription on Microsoft’s end, and the account could eventually be flagged for nonpayment, but it stops the money from leaving your account while you work things out.
