To cancel an Apple Watch cellular plan, open the Watch app on your paired iPhone, tap My Watch, tap Cellular, then tap the small information icon next to your carrier plan and choose Remove Plan. The whole thing takes about two minutes. Before you confirm, check two things on your carrier account: whether you still owe an installment balance on the watch, and whether any monthly bill credits are tied to that line. Both can turn a routine cancellation into a surprise charge.
Check Your Installment Balance and Promotional Credits First
If you bought the watch on a carrier installment plan and you’re still making payments, canceling the cellular line almost always accelerates the remaining device balance onto your next bill. The outstanding amount comes due at once rather than continuing month by month. On a GPS + Cellular model, that can be several hundred dollars depending on how far along you are.
Promotional credit forfeiture is the bigger trap. Carriers often spread trade-in credits or buy-one-get-one deals across 24 or 36 months of bill credits tied to the watch line. Cancel the line early and those credits stop immediately, while the installment balance stays. Open your carrier’s app and look under the watch line’s details for any active promotions before you remove the plan. This is the single most expensive mistake people make at this step.
Remove the Plan in the Watch App
Have your iPhone handy and make sure your watch is nearby and paired. Then:
- Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone.
- Tap the My Watch tab, then tap Cellular.
- Tap the information icon (the small “i”) next to your carrier plan.
- Tap Remove [carrier] Plan and confirm.1Apple Support. Set Up Cellular on Apple Watch
This sends a removal request to your carrier to de-link the eSIM. For most carriers, the line drops off your account automatically. Apple notes that you may still need to contact your carrier to fully cancel the subscription if the automated removal doesn’t go through.2Apple Support. Cancel Through Your Carrier Instead
If the Watch app method fails, or you no longer have the paired iPhone, go directly to your carrier. All three major carriers let you manage lines through their app or website; look for a “manage devices” or “connected devices” section. If you call, ask specifically to cancel the wearable or connected device line, and request a cancellation confirmation number for your records.
Under federal rules, carriers must make cancellation at least as simple as the original sign-up. If you activated the watch line online, you can cancel online — the carrier cannot force you into a store or onto a phone call.3eCFR. 16 CFR 425.6 – Simple Cancellation (Click to Cancel)
Before you call, know your account PIN and login. Only the primary account holder can remove lines. If a carrier rep asks for the watch’s IMEI, open Settings on the watch itself, tap General, then About, and scroll down.4Apple Support. Final-bill handling varies. AT&T stopped prorating mid-cycle cancellations in 2019, so you pay through the end of the billing period and keep service until then.6AT&T. Prorated Credits for Service Cancellation Are Ending Other carriers handle it differently; check your plan terms.
Canceling If You’re Selling the Watch
You can remove the cellular plan directly from the watch when you no longer have access to the paired iPhone. On the watch, open Settings, tap General, tap Reset, and select Erase All Content and Settings. The watch will ask whether to keep or remove your cellular plan; choose remove. After erasing, contact your carrier to confirm the subscription is actually canceled, because wiping the hardware doesn’t always terminate billing on the carrier’s end.2Apple Support. What Keeps Working After You Cancel
Canceling the watch plan has no effect on your iPhone’s service or phone number. The watch loses the ability to make calls, send texts, and use data when away from your iPhone and Wi-Fi. Fitness tracking, apps, notifications when your phone is nearby, and Wi-Fi connectivity all keep working. The watch functions like a GPS-only model.7Verizon. Verify the cancellation in two places. Reopen the Watch app, tap My Watch, then Cellular, and confirm no active plan is listed. Then check your next carrier bill to make sure the watch line charge — $10 to $15 at T-Mobile, $7.50 to $25 at Verizon depending on your phone plan — is gone.8T-Mobile. Smartwatch Data Plans9Verizon. If You Reactivate Later
You can add cellular back to the same watch through the Watch app’s Cellular menu whenever you want. Most carriers charge an activation or device connection fee for a new wearable line. T-Mobile charges a $35 Device Connection Charge that applies even for online activations, and Verizon and AT&T have similar fees in the $35 to $40 range. The fee applies to reactivations too, so factor it in before canceling if you think you might turn service back on in a few months.
