To cancel a ChatGPT subscription, go to the platform that actually bills you — OpenAI’s website, Apple, or Google — and cancel there. You’ll keep your paid features until the end of the billing period you’ve already paid for, and future charges will stop. Cancel at least 24 hours before your next billing date to avoid being charged for another cycle.
Find Out Who’s Billing You
The cancellation path depends entirely on how you originally signed up. If you subscribed in a web browser at chatgpt.com, OpenAI bills you directly. If you signed up inside the iPhone or iPad app, Apple handles the billing. If you signed up in the Android app, Google Play does.
Check your bank or card statement and look at the merchant name on the recurring charge. It will read something like “OpenAI,” “Apple.com/bill,” or “Google Play.” This matters because canceling in the wrong place won’t stop your charges. The ChatGPT mobile app itself cannot cancel a subscription that Apple or Google is billing.
Cancel on the ChatGPT Website
If OpenAI bills you directly, sign in at chatgpt.com, click your profile icon, and open Settings. Go to Billing, select Cancel plan, and confirm. Cancel on Android
Open your device’s Settings app, tap Google, then your name, then Manage your Google Account. Go to Payments & subscriptions, then Manage subscriptions. Cancel a Team or Business Plan
Only a workspace administrator can cancel these plans. Sign in to ChatGPT, click your profile icon, and open Workspace settings. Go to the Billing tab, open the Manage plan dropdown, and select Cancel subscription. What Happens After You Cancel
Your account isn’t deleted. It drops to the free tier once your paid period ends.
- Your previous conversations stay in your account and remain viewable and searchable on the free plan.
- Any custom GPTs you built remain in your account in a read-only state. You can view them but can’t edit or publish them until you resubscribe.
- You lose the higher usage limits and premium models that came with your paid tier. The free plan still gives you ChatGPT access, with lower limits and fewer features.
If you come back later, resubscribing restores full access to your custom GPTs and premium features right away.
One boundary worth flagging: if you also use the OpenAI API for development work, that’s a separate billing system. Canceling your ChatGPT subscription has no effect on API billing, and vice versa.
Can You Get a Refund?

Accidental purchases are generally eligible for a refund if you contact OpenAI within 14 days of the charge. Subscribers in the EU, UK, and Turkey have added protection. Web Subscribers Billed by OpenAI
Go to help.openai.com and click the chat widget in the bottom-right corner. Request a refund through the chat. Google Play Subscribers
You can use the OpenAI Help Center chat widget, or go to play.google.com, click your profile picture, then Payments & subscriptions, then Budget & order history. Find the charge, click Report a problem, pick the option that fits, and submit. Google usually responds within one to four days. Apple Subscribers

Refunds go back to the original payment method. If you don’t see the credit within the stated timeframe, check with your bank or card issuer, since some add their own processing delay on top.
