To cancel a D1 Training membership, contact your local facility directly and follow the cancellation method and notice period written into your signed agreement. D1 operates as a franchise with individually owned and operated locations, so there is no single corporate cancellation button and no universal policy.1D1 Training. Read Your Agreement Before You Do Anything Else
Pull out your membership agreement first. If you don’t have a copy, your facility is required to provide one. Advice online that quotes specific dollar amounts or timelines for D1 cancellation should be treated with skepticism unless it matches what you signed, because the location across town may have entirely different terms.
Four things in the contract decide your next move:
- The notice period, meaning how many days before your next billing date your cancellation request must be submitted. Common windows run from 15 to 30 days.
- The early termination fee, if you signed an annual or multi-month contract and want out before it expires.
- The required cancellation method. Some locations accept only one: in person, certified mail, email, or a portal.
- The auto-renewal clause and the deadline for stopping a rollover into a new term.
Treat the signed agreement as the final word. If a staff member tells you something different, the contract still governs.
Submitting the Cancellation to Your Facility
Call or visit your home gym and ask for the cancellation procedure in writing. Some locations use a specific form; others accept a letter or email. Ask for the timeline up front so you know your final billing date before you sign anything.
If the facility accepts in-person cancellation, bring your agreement and ID. Ask the staff member processing the request to give you a signed, dated confirmation before you leave. A verbal “you’re all set” is not enough. You want paper or an email receipt showing the date the request was submitted, the final billing date, and the date your access ends.
If written notice by mail is required, send it by certified mail with return receipt requested. That creates a dated delivery record, which matters if there’s any later dispute about whether you met the notice period. Keep a copy of what you send. Include your full name, membership or account number, the facility address, and the date you want the membership to end.
If email is allowed, send the request and explicitly ask for a reply confirming receipt. Save both the sent message and the response. An unanswered email is hard to prove was received.
D1 Workouts Online Is a Separate Cancellation
D1 Workouts, the online training platform, has its own cancellation process that is not connected to any in-person gym membership. You must notify D1 Workouts at least 15 days before the end of your current billing term, either by email or through the billing information page in your account dashboard.3D1 Training. Subscriptions auto-renew for consecutive periods matching your original term length unless you cancel before the renewal date. The cancellation is not considered complete until you receive an email reply from D1 Workouts confirming it.3D1 Training. D1 Workouts Terms of Service If the confirmation doesn’t arrive, follow up right away. Missing the 15-day window means another full term gets charged.
Exceptions That May Waive an Early Termination Fee
Even inside a long-term contract, certain circumstances can override the early termination fee.
Medical Inability
Most gym contracts allow cancellation when a medical condition prevents you from using the facility. You will usually need a signed letter from a licensed physician stating that you cannot participate in the training programs. Submit the documentation as soon as you have it. Billing stops from the point of submission, not the point of diagnosis.
Relocation
If you’re moving far enough from your D1 location that continuing is no longer practical, many contracts allow a penalty-free exit. The distance threshold varies by contract and by state law, with 25 miles a common benchmark. Expect to provide proof, such as a new lease, a utility bill at the new address, or a job relocation letter.
Cooling-Off Periods
Many states have consumer protection laws giving you a short window, often three to five business days, to cancel a new gym contract with no penalty at all. The clock starts when you sign, and the right applies even to annual agreements. If you’re having second thoughts within the first few days, check your state’s health club laws before assuming the contract fee is unavoidable.
Active-Duty Military Can Cancel Under Federal Law
Servicemembers who receive qualifying military orders can cancel a gym membership without paying an early termination fee under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act, which specifically covers gym and fitness contracts.4Office of the Law Revision Counsel. United States Code Title 50 – 3956 Termination of Certain Consumer Contracts
You qualify if you receive orders to relocate for 90 days or more to a location that doesn’t support the contract, or a permanent change of station. The contract must have been signed before you received the orders. To cancel, deliver written notice and a copy of your military orders to the facility. The gym cannot charge an early termination fee, and any prepaid amount covering the period after your termination date must be refunded within 60 days.4Office of the Law Revision Counsel. If a D1 location refuses, contact your installation’s legal assistance office. The statute is explicit and leaves the facility no discretion.
Don’t Just Stop Paying
Blocking charges at your bank or canceling the credit card you used does not cancel the membership contract. This is the costliest mistake members make. The contract stays in effect, charges continue to accrue on the facility’s books, and the unpaid balance grows each month.
Delinquent accounts are routinely sent to third-party collection agencies, often after 60 to 90 days of missed payments. Once a collector reports the debt to the credit bureaus, the negative mark can stay on your credit report for up to seven years from the date of the original delinquency. Paying one additional month during a proper notice period costs far less than resolving a collections account later.
There is also a federal consumer protection worth knowing about if your location is making cancellation unreasonably hard compared to how you signed up. The FTC’s click-to-cancel rule, finalized in late 2024, requires businesses using auto-renewing subscriptions to offer cancellation through the same channels used for sign-up, and bars forced retention pitches before a cancellation is processed.5Federal Trade Commission. Federal Trade Commission Announces Final Click-to-Cancel Rule If you signed up online or by phone, the facility shouldn’t be able to force you in person to cancel. Complaints go to the FTC at ftc.gov.
Get Confirmation and Watch Your Statements
After submitting the cancellation, make sure your written confirmation includes three things: the date your request was received, your final billing date, and the date your facility access ends. If any of the three is missing, ask for it in writing before you consider the process closed.
Watch your bank or credit card statements for at least two full billing cycles after the stated termination date. Billing errors happen, and some locations process cancellations more slowly than they should. If a charge appears after your confirmed termination date, contact the facility first with the confirmation in hand. Most errors are resolved at that step.
If the facility won’t reverse a post-cancellation charge, you can dispute it with your bank or card issuer. This is different from preemptively blocking payments. A dispute says the charge is unauthorized because you already canceled, and your confirmation is the evidence. Keep the cancellation confirmation, certified mail receipts, and any email correspondence indefinitely.
Consider a Freeze Instead If the Issue Is Temporary
If what’s driving the cancellation is temporary, such as travel, an injury, or a short-term budget problem, ask about a membership freeze before committing to cancel. Many D1 locations allow a pause for a set period, sometimes with documentation like a doctor’s note for medical freezes. A freeze keeps your contract active at reduced or zero cost and avoids any early termination fee. Maximum duration and whether a small maintenance fee applies vary by location, so ask for the freeze terms in writing before you agree.
