How to Cancel Your DStv Subscription Online or by Phone

To cancel a DStv subscription, contact DStv through the MyDStv app, the self-service website at dstv.com, the WhatsApp chatbot on 060 060 3788, the call centre, or any MultiChoice service centre, and give 20 business days’ written notice as required by South Africa’s Consumer Protection Act. You’ll pay for the current month in full, and if you’re still inside a fixed-term contract you may owe a reasonable early-termination penalty. The request itself takes minutes. The follow-up steps are what stop the money from continuing to leave your account.

What to Have Ready

Before you open any channel, pull together your Customer Number and Smartcard Number. The Smartcard Number is printed on the back of the smartcard, under the barcode.1DStv. Where Do I Find My Decoder’s Serial and Smartcard Numbers? The Customer Number sits on the top-right of your monthly statement and in the profile section of your online account. Both numbers also appear if you press the “i” or information button on your remote while a DStv channel is on screen.

DStv will verify your identity before it does anything. Have the account holder’s ID number and the cellphone number registered to the account ready. Only the registered account holder can request cancellation; an authorised representative needs proper documentation, and business accounts usually require a signed cancellation request on company letterhead.

The Five Ways to Cancel

MyDStv App

Sign in, tap the menu icon, open the account management area, and select the cancellation option. The app takes you through identity verification and produces an in-app confirmation. Expect an SMS or email to follow.

DStv Self-Service Website

Log in at dstv.com, go to your account settings, and choose the subscription management option that lets you cancel. You’ll confirm your identity and give a reason. Save or screenshot the confirmation page and its reference number before you close the tab.

WhatsApp

Save 060 060 3788, send a message, and type “cancel” when the menu appears.2DStv. Contact Us The bot checks your account details, confirms your intent, and returns an effective cancellation date. Keep the chat thread.

Call Centre

Phone the DStv contact centre and tell the agent at the start that you want to cancel, not downgrade or pause. Agents are trained to offer retention deals, so be direct. Ask for a reference number before the call ends and write it down. That number is your only proof if a charge appears later.

Service Centre

Walk into any MultiChoice or DStv service centre with your ID and account details. The consultant processes the request on the spot and hands you a printed receipt showing the cancellation date and the expected end-of-service date. A confirmation SMS or email should arrive shortly after.

Notice Period and Final Billing

The Consumer Protection Act requires 20 business days’ written notice to cancel a fixed-term agreement.3South African Government. Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008 Those are working days. Weekends and public holidays don’t count, so a request lodged on the 1st of the month can push the effective date roughly four weeks out.

DStv satellite runs as a prepaid service for a full month. Once you’ve paid, you’re in for that month’s viewing.4DStv. How Do I Upgrade/Downgrade? Service continues to the end of the paid period, and you owe any outstanding balance up to the cancellation date.

Early Cancellation Penalties

If you’re on a fixed-term contract and cancel before it expires, the Consumer Protection Act allows DStv to charge a reasonable cancellation penalty. The Act doesn’t set a fixed amount. It requires the charge to reflect the time left on the contract, the value of any equipment you’re keeping, and the notice you’ve given, and it prevents the penalty from being set so high that it blocks your right to cancel.5National Consumer Commission. DStv Internet and bundled FLTE deals have their own rules. There’s a 7-day cooling-off period during which you can cancel without fees. After day 7, cancellation fees apply if you cancel within the first 22 months of the contract. Data used during the cooling-off period is still billed, unused data is forfeited, and if hardware was included, a settlement cost applies to the equipment.6DStv. What’s the Cancellation Fee? DStv asks that you contact them directly for an exact figure on your contract.

Month-to-month satellite subscriptions with no fixed-term contract are simpler. You pay for the current month and stop. There’s no penalty because there’s no remaining term to break. If you’re not sure which you’re on, check your original agreement or ask DStv before you submit the cancellation.

If the Real Problem Is Cost

Switching to a cheaper package keeps the account active without the full monthly charge. The most affordable DStv package starts at R99 per month.7DStv. Find Your Perfect Match with the DStv Package Comparison Downgrades take effect on your next payment date, the account must be fully paid up for the change to go through, and you can only downgrade once per month.4DStv. How Do I Upgrade/Downgrade? You can request a downgrade in the self-service portal or the MyDStv app.

After You Submit the Cancellation

Check within a few days that a confirmation SMS or email actually arrived. If nothing came through, follow up with the reference number you were given.

Then handle the debit order separately. Cancelling the subscription and cancelling the debit order are two different actions. Log in to your bank’s app and confirm the DStv debit order is no longer active. If you skip this, one of two things happens: DStv keeps deducting, or the payment goes through and DStv reads it as a renewal, reversing your cancellation. Automated deductions that continue after cancellation are a common complaint, and catching them in the first billing cycle is far easier than chasing the money back.

Keep the reference number and any confirmation messages for at least three months. If a charge shows up in that window, the reference is what turns a dispute into a quick fix instead of a drawn-out exchange.
