To cancel an Emma subscription, open the Emma app and switch your plan to Basic, which is the free tier. Emma handles most subscriptions through its own payment system rather than through Apple or Google, so the App Store and Play Store usually won’t show the charge and can’t stop it for you. A small number of older accounts are still billed through Apple or Google, and those have to be canceled on the platform doing the billing.
Check Your Bank Statement First
Before you start tapping around, look at your bank or credit card statement for the Emma charge. If the billing entity reads “Emma,” your subscription is in-house and you cancel inside the app. If it reads “Apple” or “Google,” you have a legacy subscription and need to cancel through that platform. This one check saves people who go hunting through iPhone Settings for an Emma entry that was never there.
Cancel Inside the Emma App
This is the route for most current subscribers. Open Emma and go to your Feed, which is the main dashboard. Tap the profile icon in the top-left corner. You’ll see a tile showing your current plan, something like Emma Pro or Emma Ultimate. Tap the tile, tap Manage, tap Change Plan, and select Basic.
Selecting Basic drops you to the free tier and stops future charges. You keep your paid features until the end of the billing cycle you already paid for.
Cancel a Legacy Subscription Through Apple
If your statement shows Apple as the billing entity, open Settings on your iPhone, tap your name at the top, and tap Subscriptions. Find Emma and tap Cancel Subscription. If there’s no Cancel button, or the entry already shows an expiration message in red, the subscription is canceled.
Apple requires cancellation at least 24 hours before a free trial ends to avoid being charged for the first billing period. After you cancel, you keep access through the end of the period you’ve already paid for.
Cancel a Legacy Subscription Through Google Play
If Google is the billing entity, open the Google Play Store app, tap your profile icon, and open Subscriptions. Select Emma and tap Cancel before the renewal date. Google keeps your access active through the end of the current billing period.
Free Trial Timing
Emma’s free trial lasts seven days and converts automatically into a paid subscription unless you cancel before it ends. Switching to Basic before the trial expires prevents the conversion. This is the single most common way people get charged unexpectedly, so if you signed up only to try the app, set a reminder for day five or six rather than relying on memory on day seven.
Refunds
Emma allows refund requests within 14 days of your most recent subscription payment. Eligibility is determined during the cancellation flow inside the app. If your purchase qualifies, the refund goes back to your original payment method and typically arrives within a few days, though some banks take up to 10 business days to process it.
Annual plans don’t get prorated refunds for unused months if you cancel mid-year. You keep access until the year ends.
After You Cancel
Your account enters a transitional state after cancellation. Premium features like net worth tracking, custom categories, and advanced analytics stay available until the end of the billing period you already paid for. When that period ends, the app reverts to the free Basic version and no further charges hit your account.
Watch for an on-screen confirmation or an email receipt after you finish the cancellation. Save it. If a charge appears on your statement after the cancellation date, that receipt is what you’ll use to dispute it with your bank or with Emma support.
One important point: deleting the Emma app from your phone does not cancel your subscription. The subscription lives on Emma’s servers, not on your device. If you uninstall without canceling first, the charges keep coming on schedule until you either reinstall and cancel properly or contact support.
Removing Your Bank Data
Canceling stops the charges but doesn’t erase the financial data Emma has already pulled from your linked bank accounts. If you want that data gone, you have to disconnect your banks separately.
Open the app, tap your profile icon on the Feed tab, go to Account, then Bank Connections. Find the bank, tap the gear icon next to it, and select Delete Connection. This permanently deletes all data Emma holds for that connection, and Emma cannot recover it afterward, so export anything you want to keep first.
If You Get Stuck
The most common reason people can’t find their Emma subscription in Apple or Google settings is that it was never managed there. If that’s your situation, cancel inside the Emma app using the steps above.
If you’re locked out or the cancellation won’t go through, reach support through the app: go to Settings and tap Help to start a conversation. The address listed on Emma’s website is reserved for press and partnership inquiries, so going through the app is the faster path for account problems.
