How to Cancel Your FFXIV Subscription: Mog Station, Steam, and Consoles

To cancel your FFXIV subscription, log in to the Mog Station at secure.square-enix.com, open your Service Account Status, and click Cancel Subscription. That stops automatic renewal while leaving your current paid time intact. The one exception: if you subscribed through Steam, PlayStation, or Xbox, Square Enix can’t stop those payments. You have to cancel inside the store that bills you.

Canceling on the Mog Station

Go to the Mog Station and sign in with your Square Enix ID and password.¹ If you use a security token or authenticator app, you’ll need the one-time password too. Open Service Account Status, click Cancel Subscription, fill in the brief exit survey, and confirm. Automatic renewal stops immediately.²

You keep playing until the end of your current billing period. Renew yesterday on a 30-day plan and cancel today, and you still get the full 30 days you paid for.²

Do Not Click “Cancel Service Account”

The Mog Station shows two options that look almost identical: Cancel Subscription and Cancel Service Account. They do very different things, and clicking the wrong one cannot be undone.

Cancel Subscription stops recurring payments. Your characters, items, progress, and game and expansion licenses stay on Square Enix’s servers. Resubscribe in a month or in five years and everything is where you left it.

Cancel Service Account permanently deletes your characters, wipes your game serial numbers, and removes your expansion licenses. If you pick this by mistake, you’d have to repurchase the base game and every expansion and start a new character from scratch. Only use it if you truly want everything erased.

Canceling Through Steam

If Steam charges you for FFXIV, the Mog Station can’t help. Open Steam, go to Account Details, find your FFXIV subscription, and cancel it there. The subscription stays active until the end of the current paid period.³

Canceling Through PlayStation

PlayStation players can cancel from several places:

Web browser: sign in to PlayStation Account Management, select Subscription, and select Cancel below the FFXIV subscription.
PS5: Settings > Users and Accounts > Account > Payment and Subscriptions > Subscriptions. Pick the FFXIV subscription and choose Cancel Subscription.
PS4: Settings > Account Management > Account Information > Subscriptions. Pick the subscription and choose Cancel Subscription.
PlayStation App: tap the PlayStation Store icon, open the menu at the top right, choose Subscriptions Management, and select Cancel.

Cancellation leaves the subscription active until the next scheduled payment date.⁴

Canceling Through Xbox

If you bought FFXIV through the Xbox Store, cancellation runs through Microsoft. Open your Microsoft account settings in a browser or on the Xbox console, find your subscriptions, and cancel the FFXIV recurring payment.

What You Keep, What You Can Lose

Characters, gear, gil, and story progress stay on Square Enix’s servers indefinitely after cancellation. Nothing is deleted. Resubscribe whenever and your account is intact.²

Housing is the exception. FFXIV’s automatic demolition system reclaims private estates when the owner hasn’t entered them within 45 days, and free company estates when no member has entered within 45 days.⁵ A lapse longer than that window can cost you the plot and everything on it. Square Enix occasionally suspends the timer during major real-world emergencies, with any pause announced on the Lodestone.⁶ If you own a house and plan a long break, log in near the end of the 45-day window just to enter the estate and reset the clock.

Retainer contents are safer. Items, gil, and unclaimed rewards held by retainers aren’t deleted when your subscription ends; they’re just unreachable until you come back. Additional retainers you pay for through the Retainer Service work the same way, and reactivating that service restores access to what they were holding.⁷ Any Market Board listings those retainers had running are removed on lapse, with the items returned to retainer inventory.

Two more things worth knowing before you cancel. Square Enix does not refund subscription fees that have already been paid. You play out the time, but you don’t get money back for unused days, and this holds even if the subscription was registered to the wrong Square Enix account by mistake.⁸ And once an account has ever paid for a subscription, it can never return to the free trial. The free trial is only available to accounts that have never purchased game time.

If You Want to Spend Less Instead of Quitting

If the goal is a smaller bill rather than a full exit, consider dropping from the Standard tier ($14.99 per month) to the Entry tier ($12.99 per month).⁹ Entry caps you at one character per server and eight total; Standard allows eight per server and up to 40 total. For a single-main player, Entry is usually enough.

In the Mog Station, open Service Account Dashboard, choose Credit Card/Crysta Payment under Subscription Renewal, and select the tier you want. Downgrades from Standard to Entry take effect at the next renewal date. Upgrades from Entry to Standard charge a prorated amount immediately for the remainder of the current billing cycle.¹⁰

Players on game time cards don’t need to cancel anything at all. The cards provide 60 days of prepaid time, and access simply stops when they run out, with no automatic charges.¹¹ Game time cards work only with the Standard tier.⁹
