To cancel a ChatGPT subscription that gives you GPT-5 access, cancel at least 24 hours before your next billing date through whichever platform originally charged you. Miss that window and you’ll be billed for another month, because subscription fees are non-refundable by default.1OpenAI Help Center. How Do I Cancel My ChatGPT Subscription GPT-5 access currently comes bundled with ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team plans rather than as a standalone subscription, so the steps below apply to whichever tier you’re on.2OpenAI. Check Where You’re Being Billed First
Before you open any settings, pull up a recent bank or card statement. If the charge is from OpenAI, cancel on the ChatGPT website. If it’s from Apple or Google, cancel through that app store. Canceling on OpenAI’s site does nothing when Apple or Google is handling your billing, and the reverse is also true. This is the single most common reason people think they canceled and get charged again.
Cancel on the ChatGPT Website
If you subscribed directly through OpenAI, log in at chatgpt.com and:
- Click your profile icon in the bottom-left corner and select Settings.
- Open the Billing tab.
- Under Cancel plan, click Cancel.
OpenAI may ask why you’re leaving before processing the request. Once you confirm, your status updates on screen and a confirmation email is sent to the address on your account.1OpenAI Help Center. How Do I Cancel My ChatGPT Subscription Keep that email. If a charge shows up after your cancellation date, the receipt is the fastest way to get it reversed.
Cancel Through the Apple App Store
If you subscribed through the ChatGPT iOS app, OpenAI doesn’t control the billing — Apple does. Cancel through your device settings:
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
- Tap your name to open your Apple Account page.
- Tap Subscriptions to see every active and expired subscription.
- Select ChatGPT, then tap Cancel Subscription.
No extra verification is needed beyond being logged into your Apple account.3Apple. If You Want to Cancel a Subscription From Apple After you cancel, the subscription page shows an expiration date instead of a renewal date. That’s your confirmation the recurring charge is off.
Cancel Through Google Play
Android users who subscribed through Google Play use Google’s interface rather than the phone’s main settings:
- Go to play.google.com/store/account/subscriptions or open the Google Play app.
- Find ChatGPT in your active subscriptions.
- Tap Cancel subscription and follow the prompts.
One warning worth repeating: uninstalling the ChatGPT app does not cancel the subscription. Both Google and Apple keep billing until you explicitly cancel through the steps above.4Google Play Help. Cancel, Pause, or Change a Subscription on Google Play People find this out months later, after charges have been hitting an app they deleted and forgot about.
Team and Business Workspaces
Only the workspace owner can cancel a Team or Business plan, and the path is slightly different:
- Log in at chatgpt.com.
- Click your profile icon and select Workspace settings.
- Open the Billing tab.
- Open the Manage plan dropdown and select Cancel subscription.
Cancellation takes effect the day after your next billing date, same as personal plans.1OpenAI Help Center. How Do I Cancel My ChatGPT Subscription Enterprise and Edu plans aren’t covered by this self-service process; those require contacting OpenAI’s sales team directly.
What Happens After You Cancel
Canceling doesn’t cut you off right away. Your paid features stay active until the day after your next billing date, so you get the full period you already paid for.1OpenAI Help Center. How Do I Cancel My ChatGPT Subscription After that, the account drops to the free tier, which still gives you limited GPT-5.5 access within a five-hour window along with tighter limits on advanced features like data analysis and image creation.5OpenAI Help Center. ChatGPT Free Tier FAQ Your conversation history and saved data stay in the account. Canceling doesn’t delete anything.
Can You Get a Refund?
OpenAI’s default position is that subscription fees are non-refundable.1OpenAI Help Center. How Do I Cancel My ChatGPT Subscription Two exceptions matter.
First, if you were charged by accident, you can request a refund within 14 days of the charge by contacting OpenAI support. Accidental purchases inside that window are generally eligible. Second, if you live in the EU, UK, or Turkey, you’re entitled to a prorated refund when you cancel within 14 days of purchase, whether the charge was accidental or not.6OpenAI Help Center. How Do I Request a Refund for My ChatGPT Subscription
Everyone else is why the 24-hour advance cancellation window matters. Once you’re billed, you’re almost certainly not getting that month’s fee back. Set a calendar reminder a few days before renewal if you’re undecided.
If You Can’t Log Into Your Account
Lost your email or password? You can still stop the billing. OpenAI’s Privacy Request Portal at privacy.openai.com lets you submit an account deletion request, which cancels any active subscription tied to that account.7OpenAI Help Center. How to Delete Your Account It’s a nuclear option — the account is wiped — but it beats paying indefinitely for something you can’t access. If you originally subscribed through Apple or Google, you can also cancel through those platforms without needing your OpenAI login at all.
If You’re Charged After Canceling
Start with OpenAI support and have your confirmation email ready. Most post-cancellation billing errors get sorted out quickly at that stage.
If support doesn’t resolve it, dispute the charge with your bank. For credit cards, contact your issuer and initiate a chargeback. For debit cards or bank account charges, federal rules give you 60 days from the date your bank sent the statement containing the unauthorized charge to report it and limit your liability. Miss that window and you can be left on the hook for later unauthorized debits, so don’t sit on a statement that looks wrong.
There’s a broader consumer-protection backstop here as well. The Restore Online Shoppers’ Confidence Act requires any business selling through an internet-based recurring subscription to provide “simple mechanisms for a consumer to stop recurring charges,” and the FTC has taken action against companies whose cancellation processes required more steps or different methods than the sign-up.8Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 US Code 8403 – Negative Option Marketing on the Internet If you enrolled online, the cancel option has to be available online too.
