How to Cancel Your Location Tracker App Subscription

To cancel a location tracker app subscription, go to the platform that processed your original purchase — the Apple App Store, Google Play, or the developer’s own website — and cancel from there. Deleting the app from your phone does not stop the billing. Until you cancel through the right platform, the subscription renews automatically and your card keeps getting charged.

Uninstalling the App Does Nothing to the Billing

This is the mistake that costs people the most money. Removing an app from your home screen has no effect on the subscription attached to it. The billing relationship sits between you and Apple, Google, or the developer — not between you and the app icon. Google states this directly in its support documentation: uninstalling will not cancel your subscription.1Google Play Help. Cancel, Pause, or Change a Subscription on Google Play

On iPhone the result is the same. The app can be gone for months and you’ll still see charges from apple.com/bill on your statement.2Apple Support. Get Help With Charges From apple.com/bill If a recurring charge you don’t recognize carries that billing label, the subscription runs through Apple and has to be canceled inside Apple’s system.

Canceling on iPhone or iPad

If you subscribed through the App Store, the cancel button lives in your device settings, not inside the tracker app:

  • Open Settings and tap your name at the top.
  • Tap Subscriptions.
  • Find the location tracker and tap it.
  • Tap Cancel Subscription. You may need to scroll down.

Apple confirms the cancellation and you keep access until the end of the billing period you already paid for.3Apple Support. If You Want to Cancel a Subscription From Apple

If the tracker isn’t in your Subscriptions list, it wasn’t purchased through Apple. The most likely alternative is that you signed up on the developer’s website, in which case the cancellation has to happen there.

Free Trials: The 24-Hour Rule

Many location trackers advertise a free trial that converts into a paid subscription automatically. Apple requires cancellation at least 24 hours before the trial ends to avoid being charged.3Apple Support. If You Want to Cancel a Subscription From Apple A 7-day trial started Monday ends the following Monday, so you need to cancel by Sunday. Set a reminder the day you sign up.

Canceling on Android Through Google Play

For purchases made through Google Play, the cancellation lives inside the Play Store app:

  • Open the Google Play Store.
  • Go to Subscriptions. You can also reach it through Settings > Google > your name > Manage your Google Account > Payments & subscriptions.
  • Select the location tracker.
  • Tap Cancel subscription and follow the prompts.

You keep access until the end of the current billing cycle, and Google won’t charge you after that date.1Google Play Help. Cancel, Pause, or Change a Subscription on Google Play

Pause Instead of Cancel

Google Play lets you pause some subscriptions, which Apple does not. Pausing stops the billing without wiping your account, with durations that range from one week to three months depending on the app.1Google Play Help. Cancel, Pause, or Change a Subscription on Google Play Not every tracker supports it. If the option doesn’t appear, a full cancellation is the only route.

Canceling Directly With the Developer

Some trackers bypass the app stores. If you handed over your card on the company’s website, your iPhone settings and Google Play will show nothing. You have to log into the developer’s account portal and cancel there.

Federal law backs you up. The Restore Online Shoppers’ Confidence Act requires any business that charges you through an online subscription to provide a simple way to stop the recurring charges.4Office of the Law Revision Counsel. United States Code Title 15 – Section 8403 In practice, that means a cancellation option in your account settings. Burying the cancel button or forcing a phone call for a subscription you signed up for online is the kind of practice the FTC targets as deceptive.

Look for a tab labeled Billing, Account, or Subscription after logging in. If no cancellation option exists, email the company’s support address, state clearly that you want to cancel and stop all future charges, and keep a copy of the email.

If the Subscription Isn’t in Your List: Family Sharing

Only the person who originally bought the subscription can cancel it. When a family organizer sets up a tracker to monitor a child’s device, the child’s Apple ID or Google account won’t show a cancel button for that subscription. The purchaser has to log in with their own account to end it. If your cancel search is coming up empty, ask whoever manages the family group to check their own subscriptions.

Getting Your Money Back on the Last Charge

Canceling stops future charges. It does not refund the most recent one. For that, go back to the platform that processed the payment.

Apple

Apple handles refund requests at reportaproblem.apple.com. Sign in, find the charge in your purchase history, and select Request a refund.5Apple Support. Request a Refund for Apps or Content That You Bought From Apple The charge has to show as completed, not pending. Apple typically responds within 48 hours. Approval isn’t guaranteed.

Google Play

Google gives you 48 hours after a purchase to request a refund through Google Play. After that, you have to go to the app developer directly. For charges you never authorized, you have 120 days to report the transaction to Google.6Google Play. Request a Refund on Google Play

Credit Card Dispute

If the platform refuses and you believe the charge was a billing error, dispute it with your card issuer. Under the Fair Credit Billing Act, your written dispute has to reach the issuer within 60 days of the first statement showing the charge.7Federal Trade Commission. Fair Credit Billing A phone call alone doesn’t trigger the legal protections. Send it in writing.

Confirm the Cancellation Actually Stuck

Don’t trust the button. Check two things.

First, the confirmation email. Both Apple and Google send one to the account email within a few hours. If nothing arrives, go back into Subscriptions and verify the status reads canceled or expiring. The entry should show an expiration date instead of a renewal date — that date is when your access ends and confirms no further charge is scheduled.

Second, the next statement. Watch your card or bank account through the next billing cycle. If a charge still appears, contact the platform’s support with your cancellation confirmation attached as proof.

Deleting the Location Data Itself

Ending the subscription stops the charges. It does not erase the location history the app has already stored. A tracker may hold months or years of detailed movement records on its servers after you walk away.

Most reputable trackers include a Delete My Account or Delete Data option in the app settings or the web portal. If you’ve already uninstalled, open the developer’s website and look for an account management page, or email support with a specific request: delete all stored location history and account data, not just deactivate the account.

No single federal law guarantees every American the right to data deletion from private companies, though the FTC has brought enforcement actions against companies that collected and retained location data without proper consent, and several states have their own privacy laws that grant deletion rights. If a company refuses your deletion request, filing a complaint at ftc.gov/complaint creates a record that supports future enforcement.
