How to Cancel Your Modrinth Server Subscription

To cancel your Modrinth server subscription, back up your world, then open your server management panel, go to the billing or subscription section, and cancel the plan itself rather than deleting the server instance. Your server keeps running until the end of the billing period you already paid for, and a confirmation email marks the date charges should stop.

Back Up Your World Before You Cancel Anything

Once the billing period ends and your server is suspended, retrieving your files becomes difficult or impossible. Download what you want to keep first. Modrinth’s built-in backup tool is faster than SFTP for worlds with many small files.

  • Stop the server. Use the Stop button on your server panel and wait until the Play button reappears or the green console dot disappears. Don’t back up a running server.
  • Open the Backups tab, click Create backup, name it, and let it finish. Don’t restart the server while it’s running.
  • Click the three dots next to Restore on the finished backup and choose Download. You’ll get a .zip containing world files, configs, and mods.

Each Modrinth server holds up to 15 backups, and the download is a complete replica of the Files tab, so you can extract just the world folder or reimport the whole thing to another host later.1Modrinth Help Center. Managing Backups

If you’d rather pull files directly, connect through an SFTP client. Credentials are under your server’s Settings, then Advanced, then Launch SFTP. Drag the world folder from the server side to your local machine.2Modrinth Help Center. Import an Existing World Into Your Server

Cancel the Subscription, Not Just the Server

Log in to your Modrinth account and open your server management panel. Find the subscription or billing section of your account settings, where your active plan and billing cycle are shown. Click to cancel the plan. Modrinth will show a confirmation screen so a stray click doesn’t end your service, and may ask why you’re leaving. Confirm on the final prompt. Auto-renewal is then disabled for your next billing cycle.

Here’s the part that catches people: deleting the server instance from your dashboard is not the same as canceling the subscription. The recurring payment agreement can survive removal of the service it was paying for. Cancel through the billing or subscription settings, not by deleting the server.

What Happens After You Cancel

Your server stays active until the end of the billing period you’ve already paid for. Modrinth bills monthly or quarterly, so remaining access ranges from a few days to several weeks depending on the plan.3Modrinth. Modrinth Hosting After that date, the server is suspended and no further charges apply. Use the remaining window to grab anything you didn’t back up.

Check your email for a confirmation from Modrinth showing the cancellation date and the end of your billing period. Save it. If a charge shows up on your statement after that date, that email is your proof.

Getting a Refund for Time Already Paid

Canceling stops future charges. Money back for the current period is a separate request through Modrinth support. The policy has three tiers:

  • Within 24 hours of the charge: full refund, no questions asked.
  • After 24 hours with an unused server: if support can verify you haven’t used the server during the current billing cycle, they’ll issue a partial refund for the remaining days.
  • After 24 hours with technical problems: if the server was inaccessible because of Modrinth’s own hardware or software, you can get a partial refund for the affected days. Problems caused by your mods, configs, or mod loaders don’t qualify.

Modrinth says staff may still accommodate cases that don’t fit those categories, depending on circumstances. To request a refund, click the green chat bubble in the bottom-right corner of the Modrinth site, select Modrinth Servers, and provide your Modrinth username (found by clicking your avatar and selecting Profile).4Modrinth Help Center. If Charges Keep Appearing After Cancellation

Start with Modrinth support. Open a ticket through the green chat bubble and explain what’s happening. Modrinth’s documentation says staff can force an unwanted payment to a cancelled status on their end.5Modrinth Help Center. Repeated Failed Charges

If that doesn’t resolve it, dispute the charge with your bank or card issuer. Under the Fair Credit Billing Act, you have 60 days from the date the billing statement containing the error was sent to submit a written dispute.6Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1666 – Correction of Billing Errors

Federal law also requires any online service using recurring billing to give consumers a simple way to stop those charges.7Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 8403 – Negative Option Marketing on the Internet The FTC’s click-to-cancel rule requires sellers to make cancellation at least as easy as signing up.8Federal Trade Commission. Consider Downgrading Instead

If the issue is cost rather than needing to leave, a smaller plan may save enough that cancellation isn’t necessary. Modrinth offers three standard tiers and a custom option:

  • Small: 4 GB RAM, $10 per month billed quarterly
  • Medium: 6 GB RAM, $15 per month billed quarterly
  • Large: 8 GB RAM, $20 per month billed quarterly
  • Custom: starting at $5 per month

Quarterly billing carries a 16% discount over monthly. The backup and cancellation steps above are the same regardless of which plan you’re on.3Modrinth. Modrinth Hosting
