How to Cancel Your Orangetheory Membership: Methods, 30-Day Rule, and Exemptions

To end your Orangetheory membership, give your home studio written notice at least 30 days before your next billing date; because Orangetheory runs on month-to-month contracts with a 30-day cancellation requirement, the timing of that notice is what decides whether you pay for one more cycle or none. You can submit the request online, in person, or by email, and each studio is independently owned, so the accepted methods vary slightly by location.

Ways to Submit the Cancellation

The cleanest option is the online cancellation request form on Orangetheory’s website. You enter your name, contact information, home studio, and reason for canceling. After submission, your home studio contacts you to verify and confirm an effective date. It isn’t instant, but it creates a timestamped record of when notice was given.

If you prefer handling it in person, go to your home studio and ask the front desk to process the cancellation. Get a signed and dated copy of the form or receipt before you leave. Most studios also accept email, though some still ask for an in-person visit after the email comes in. If the studio’s email isn’t on your original membership agreement, call and ask for it before sending anything.

When a studio won’t respond, send the notice by USPS certified mail with return receipt to the studio’s physical address. The delivery proof holds up in a billing dispute and is worth the few extra dollars if the front desk and inbox have gone silent.

How the 30-Day Rule Affects Your Final Bill

Your cancellation window runs against your personal billing date, not the calendar month. Billing date on the 15th and notice submitted on the 10th: your notice lands before the next renewal and the membership ends after the current cycle. Notice submitted on the 16th: you’ll be charged for the upcoming month and the membership continues through that entire additional cycle.

There is no proration. You don’t get a partial refund for days remaining after the cancellation processes; the studio bills in full cycles. Submitting a few days before your billing date rather than the day of gives you a cushion if processing lags.

All three membership tiers (Basic, Elite, and Premier) follow the same month-to-month structure and 30-day policy, and none carry a long-term commitment, so there is no early termination fee after your first month.

When You Can Cancel Immediately Without Extra Charges

Some circumstances let you end the membership without paying through another billing cycle. The specifics depend on your state’s health club laws and your franchise’s contract language.

Medical Inability to Exercise

If a condition or injury prevents you from using the gym, studios typically accept a signed letter from your physician explaining the condition and confirming you cannot exercise. Some state laws require health clubs to cancel without penalty when a member becomes disabled, and Orangetheory has its own Letter of Medical Necessity form for related purposes. Whether the condition must be permanent or only long-term depends on your state’s statute and your contract.

Relocation

Moving far enough from your home studio that no other Orangetheory location is convenient is another recognized reason. Many state health club laws set the threshold at 25 miles from any comparable facility. You’ll need proof of the new address: a signed lease, a mortgage closing document, or a utility bill in your name. If another Orangetheory sits near your new home, the studio may offer a transfer instead.

Military Orders

Active-duty service members with orders to relocate or deploy for 90 days or more to a location that doesn’t support the membership can cancel without an early termination charge under federal law. The same right extends to a dependent listed on the contract. Provide a copy of the orders with the cancellation request.

Freezing Instead of Canceling

If the reason you want out is temporary (travel, a short injury, a busy stretch at work), a freeze keeps your spot without full-price billing. Orangetheory allows freezes of up to 60 days, twice per year. The freeze fee varies by studio but is commonly around $15 per month.

Medical freezes may waive that fee entirely with a doctor’s note confirming you can’t exercise because of surgery, injury, or pregnancy. Some studios have approved medical freezes for up to six months, though this varies. Call your home studio to confirm the fee and documentation, and follow up to make sure the freeze was applied, since confirmation emails aren’t always automatic.

Why You Can’t Just Stop Paying

Canceling the card on file, removing a payment method, or skipping classes does not end the membership. The contract stays active, monthly charges accrue as unpaid balances, and the studio can send the debt to collections. A collection account can drop your credit score and stays on your report for up to seven years from the date of the first missed payment.

Unwinding a collections situation later is far harder than filing a cancellation form now. If you’re already disputing charges that continued after you thought you canceled, bring your dated confirmation (or certified mail return receipt) to the studio manager. For disputes that go nowhere, a complaint to your state’s attorney general or consumer protection office is the next step.

Confirming It Actually Went Through

After the studio processes the cancellation, you should get a confirmation email within a few business days. Check the final charge amount and the access end date against what you were told. If nothing arrives within a week, call or visit; silence doesn’t mean it went through.

Watch your bank or credit card statements for at least two full billing cycles after the confirmation date. Franchise billing systems sometimes lag behind front-desk decisions, and catching an erroneous charge within 60 days gives you the strongest position for a chargeback if the studio won’t reverse it. Keep your confirmation, any email correspondence, and the certified mail receipt until every charge has stopped.
