How to Cancel Your Planet Fitness Account Online

To cancel your Planet Fitness membership online, log into your account at planetfitness.com, open your membership settings, and submit the cancellation request there. The option only appears if your home club has enabled it, and the timing of your request decides whether you pay for another month or the annual fee. If online cancellation isn’t available at your location, you’ll need to go in person or send a certified letter to your home club. Phone and email requests are not accepted.

Check the Billing Dates Before You Click Anything

Planet Fitness drafts monthly dues on the 17th. Your cancellation has to reach your home club by the 10th to stop the next charge. Cancel on the 11th and you’re paying for one more month, no refund.

The annual fee is the one that stings. It’s $49 at most locations, $39 at some, and it hits roughly two months after you signed up. To avoid it, cancel by the 25th of the month before it’s scheduled to post. Signed up in March with the annual fee due in May? You have until April 25th. Once it drafts, it’s non-refundable.

The Online Cancellation Steps

Sign in at planetfitness.com with the email and password from your signup. Go to your account or membership settings and look for the cancellation option. The system will display any outstanding balance or pending charges that have to be settled before it will process the request. Follow the prompts, confirm, and save the confirmation number or a screenshot of the final screen. Keep that record. If a charge shows up on your statement after you’ve cancelled, that confirmation is what you’ll use to get it reversed, either through your club or through a chargeback with your bank.

Not every franchise has turned on online cancellation yet. If you don’t see the option in your dashboard, your home club hasn’t activated it, and no amount of clicking around will change that. Calling the club or emailing won’t work either. Planet Fitness doesn’t accept cancellations through either channel.

When the Online Option Isn’t There

In Person at Your Home Club

Go to the location where you originally signed up and ask the front desk to process a cancellation. Bring a photo ID. You’ll fill out a cancellation form, and you should leave with a copy in hand.

By Certified Mail

Send a cancellation letter via USPS Certified Mail with Return Receipt Requested to your home club’s street address. Not corporate. The letter needs your full name, membership ID, a clear request to cancel, and your signature. The certified mail receipt and the signed green card are your proof the club received it, which matters if a charge shows up later.

If You’re Still in a 12-Month Commitment

Some memberships include a 12-month commitment. Cancel before that term ends and you’ll owe a $58 buyout fee on top of any remaining monthly dues through your cancellation date.1Planet Fitness. Planet Fitness Customer Service and FAQ The buyout applies no matter which cancellation method you use. Month-to-month members with no remaining commitment don’t owe it.

Planet Fitness may waive the buyout for a qualifying medical condition or a long-distance move. For medical, you’ll need a doctor’s note on official letterhead stating you can’t use gym facilities, and the wording should be specific about disability or inability to exercise rather than vague. For relocation, the general threshold is a move of more than 25 miles from your home club to an area with no Planet Fitness within 10 miles of your new address, backed by proof like a lease or utility bill. Franchise owners have some discretion, so confirm the requirements with your club before you count on the waiver.

Don’t Just Cancel the Card

Letting your card expire or blocking the charge doesn’t cancel the membership. Dues keep accruing, and after about 60 to 90 days of missed payments the account typically goes to a third-party collection agency. Planet Fitness itself doesn’t report to the credit bureaus, but the collection agency can, and a collections entry can drop a credit score by 50 to 100 points depending on your overall profile.

Formally cancelling stops new charges, but it doesn’t wipe out a balance that’s already past due. If the account has already been sent to collections, cancelling won’t call the collector off.

What the Click-to-Cancel Rule Means for You

The FTC’s Click-to-Cancel rule requires any business that lets you sign up online to let you cancel online through a process that’s equally simple.2Federal Trade Commission. Federal Trade Commission Announces Final Click-to-Cancel Rule Making It Easier for Consumers to End Recurring Subscriptions and Memberships It also bars companies from routing you through a mandatory phone call or retention pitch before honoring the request. The cancellation has to go through first; any counteroffer comes after.

The compliance deadline was July 14, 2025. If your club signed you up through the website or app but still won’t let you cancel the same way, that’s potentially a federal violation. You can file a complaint at ftc.gov/complaint. In the meantime, use certified mail so you have a documented record of the request.

Information to Have Ready

Pull these together before you log in or head to the club:

  • Your membership ID, on your plastic key tag or in the barcode section of the Planet Fitness app.
  • Your home club’s address, meaning the specific location where you signed up, not corporate.
  • The name, email, and phone number on file, which have to match what billing has.
  • The last four digits of the bank account or card on file, in case you need to verify your identity.

Session timeouts on the site and front-desk lines at the club are both easier to handle when you aren’t digging for your member number partway through.
