You can cancel your Planet Fitness membership online only if your home club has turned that option on in your account at planetfitness.com. Because each Planet Fitness operates as a franchise, the club where you originally signed up decides which cancellation methods are available to you. If the online route isn’t offered, the two methods that work everywhere are canceling in person at your home club or sending a cancellation letter by certified mail.1Planet Fitness. Customer Service and FAQ Phone and email cancellations are not accepted.
Check Whether Your Club Offers Online Cancellation
Log into your account at planetfitness.com and look under your membership or account settings for a cancellation option. Labels change from time to time, but you’re looking for something like “Manage Membership” or “Cancel Membership.” If nothing along those lines appears, your home club hasn’t enabled online cancellation and you’ll need to use one of the fallback methods.
If you’ve never set up an online account, create one at planetfitness.com using the email address tied to your membership. Without that account, you can’t reach any online cancellation feature in the first place.
What to Have Ready
- Your login email and password.
- The name of your home club, meaning the specific location where you signed up. Your contract lives there, and the request routes back to it no matter which method you use.
- Your member ID number, printed on your keytag or visible in your online profile. Your contract start date is also worth checking so you know whether you’re still inside a commitment period.
Step-by-Step Online Cancellation
Once you’re logged in and have found the cancellation option, the flow is short. Open your account or membership settings, choose the cancellation link, and pick a reason for leaving from the dropdown. Confirm the request. A final prompt usually asks you to acknowledge that you’ll lose gym access; click through to submit. A few minutes, start to finish, once you’ve located the right screen.
Deadlines That Decide What You Pay
Timing matters more than the method. Three billing tripwires can catch you if you cancel too late.
Monthly Billing Cutoff
Your cancellation has to be processed before your next billing date, or you’ll be charged for another month. Planet Fitness bills most members on the 17th, though your date may differ. Submitting at least a week before your billing date is the safe window.
Annual Enhancement Fee
Planet Fitness charges an annual fee on top of monthly dues, often around $49 for a Classic membership.2Planet Fitness. Gym Memberships The billing date varies by club. To avoid it, your cancellation must be received by the 25th of the month before the annual fee is due. If you don’t know when yours hits, check your contract or ask your home club.
Commitment Period and Buyout Fee
Many Planet Fitness memberships carry a 12-month commitment period.2Planet Fitness. Gym Memberships Cancel before the year is up and you’ll owe a buyout fee, typically around $58. This is the surprise that catches most people. Look at your contract start date before you cancel. If you’re a few weeks short of the twelve months, waiting can be cheaper than leaving today.
If Online Cancellation Is Not Available
When no cancellation option appears in your account, you have two choices.
Cancel in Person
Walk into your home club, tell the front desk you want to cancel, and fill out the form they hand you. Simple, but it only works at the location where you signed up. If you’ve moved away, the mail option is the practical one.
Cancel by Certified Mail
Write a letter with your full name, mailing address, phone number, email, member ID, and a clear statement that you’re requesting cancellation. Date and sign it. Mail it to your home club’s street address, not to Planet Fitness corporate. You can find the club’s address at planetfitness.com/gym-locations.
Send it USPS Certified Mail with Return Receipt Requested. That gives you a delivery date the club can’t argue with. Keep the receipt and the return card in case a charge shows up later. Allow at least seven business days after delivery for the club to process the letter, and if you’re racing a billing deadline or annual fee, count backward from that date and mail early.
Confirming Your Cancellation Went Through
Submitting the request is not the same as being canceled. Verify it.
- Save any confirmation email somewhere you can find it months from now.
- Log back in a few days later and check that your membership status reads as canceled or inactive.
li>Watch the bank or card account tied to your membership for at least two billing cycles. If a charge appears that shouldn’t, contact your home club with your confirmation email or certified mail receipt. If the club won’t fix it, dispute the charge with your bank.
The most common post-cancellation problem is a charge one month later because the request was submitted after the billing cutoff. If you have documentation showing you canceled before the deadline, that’s the evidence you need to get the charge reversed.
