How to Cancel Your PlayStation Account: Prep, Submit, and Erase

To cancel your PlayStation account, you have to contact PlayStation Support directly and ask them to close it. There is no self-service button in your console settings or on the website, and once the closure goes through, it is permanent: your games, saves, trophies, wallet balance, Online ID, and subscriptions are gone, and the account cannot be recovered.1PlayStation. How to Close an Account for PlayStation Because of that, most of the work happens before the call.

What Closure Actually Wipes Out

Every digital purchase on a PlayStation account is a license, not property you own. Sony’s Terms of Service state that words like “own,” “purchase,” or “buy” on the PlayStation Store do not transfer ownership to you.2PlayStation. PlayStation Terms of Service When the account closes, those licenses terminate. That covers full games, DLC, in-game currency, themes, and avatars.

You also lose your Online ID permanently, along with your friends list, messages, trophy history, and any remaining wallet balance. PlayStation Plus benefits end at the same time. If months are left on your subscription, they disappear with the account.

Do These Things Before You Call

Spend or Zero Out Your Wallet

Any funds sitting in your wallet at the time of closure are forfeited. Check the balance and either use it up on content you can enjoy before the account closes, or accept the loss knowingly. There is no refund of wallet funds after closure.

Cancel Auto-Renewing Subscriptions

Turn off auto-renewal on PlayStation Plus and any other recurring services through your console settings or the PlayStation app. That keeps you from being billed again and lets you use the service through the end of the current period.3PlayStation. How to Cancel PlayStation Plus

If you bought or renewed PlayStation Plus in the last 14 days, you can request a refund before you close the account, though the amount may be reduced to reflect the days you already used the service.4PlayStation. PlayStation Store Cancellation Policy Past 14 days, no refund is available on payments already made.

Unlink Third-Party Services

This is the step people skip and regret. Services like Epic Games, EA, and Ubisoft keep their own accounts linked to your PSN profile. If you close PSN without unlinking first, you can lose access to progress and purchases tied to those services on PlayStation, and relinking those services to a new PSN account later is not always straightforward.

Log into each service’s website, find the linked accounts or connected platforms section, and disconnect PlayStation Network. Do it for every cross-platform game service you use. From the PlayStation side, you can also review and revoke connections through the authorized apps section of your account management settings.5PlayStation. How to Manage Authorized Apps Revoke on both sides for a clean break.

Deactivate Your Console

Deactivating your console as the primary device for the account is separate from closing the account and does not delete data or affect the hardware.6PlayStation. How to Deactivate a PlayStation Console Doing it first cleanly disassociates the console from the account before deletion, which matters if you plan to sell the hardware or set up a new account on the same machine. You can deactivate through the account management section in console settings or through the PlayStation website. If you no longer have the console, PlayStation Support can handle deactivation remotely during the closure call.

Submitting the Closure Request

Have two pieces of information ready:1PlayStation. How to Close an Account for PlayStation

  • Your Sign-in ID, the email address on the account.
  • Your Online ID, the public PSN username other players see.

Expect additional verification questions. Knowing your registered date of birth and recent purchase details helps you avoid being bounced between agents.

Go to the PlayStation Support site and use the contact option on the account closure page.1PlayStation. How to Close an Account for PlayStation Depending on your region and the time of day, you may reach an agent by live chat or phone. Tell them you want to permanently close the account. They will verify your identity, process the request, and the account then enters a deletion queue. PlayStation’s support page does not publish an exact timeline, but the account becomes inaccessible while deletion finalizes. If you get disconnected mid-call, you will have to start over, so leave enough time for the full conversation.

Child Accounts Work Differently

If you manage a family group and want to close a child’s account, the standard process does not apply. PlayStation does not allow child members to be removed from a family group.7PlayStation. How to Set Up Family Accounts on PlayStation Contact PlayStation Support directly to discuss what options exist. Also keep in mind that closing a family manager’s own account affects the whole group, so sort out what happens to any child accounts before you close yours.

If You Want Your Data Erased, Not Just Deactivated

Closing the account ends your access, but a separate privacy request is what actually removes personal data from Sony’s systems. U.S. residents can request deletion under the California Consumer Privacy Act through PlayStation’s online privacy form, which asks for your name, contact email, phone number, Sign-in ID, and Online ID. You can also call Sony’s Consumer Services line at 1-800-345-7669 to make the request by phone.8PlayStation Support. Submitting a CCPA Consumer Request If full data deletion matters to you, submit this in addition to closing the account.
