How to Cancel Your Sprout Social Account: Refunds and 90-Day Data

To cancel your Sprout Social account, the Account Owner opens Account and Settings, selects Billing, and clicks Deactivate. The process itself takes a few minutes, but the money side is less friendly: annual plans do not get refunds for unused time, and annual plans billed monthly still owe every remaining month of the term. Export your data and confirm who holds the Account Owner role before you start.

Export Everything You Want to Keep First

Once the account is canceled, posts, reports, files, and connected profiles are deactivated inside Sprout and do not come back unless you reactivate within the retention window.1Sprout Social. How Do I Cancel My Account

From the Smart Inbox, export your full message history as a CSV covering every connected network, brand keywords, and sent messages.2Sprout Social. Inbox Export Reviews export separately from their own section. From the reporting tab, download performance reports in CSV or PDF, and pull any custom reports or listening data individually. Screenshot the billing dashboard too, so you have a record of your current plan, add-ons, and next billing date if a charge is disputed later.

Only the Account Owner Can Cancel

Sprout restricts cancellation to the current Account Owner. No other role can process it, no matter their admin level. Check who holds the role under Account and Settings in the user list. If that person has left the company or moved roles, ownership has to be transferred before cancellation is possible, and that single issue is the most common reason a cancellation stalls.3Sprout Social. The In-App Cancellation Steps

If you pay with a credit card inside the app, the self-service flow is short:

  • Click Account and Settings, then Billing.
  • Click Deactivate to start the cancellation.
  • Answer the short exit survey and confirm on the final screen, which shows when access ends.

Wait for the confirmation message before closing the tab. If you drop off mid-flow, the account stays active and billing continues. Keep the confirmation email that Sprout sends to the Account Owner’s address; it documents the effective cancellation date if a charge appears later.

If You Pay by Invoice or a Custom Contract

Clicking Deactivate on an invoice-billed or custom-contract account doesn’t fully close things out. Sprout routes the request to a Customer Success Manager who reviews it against your service period. You can also email successteam@sproutsocial.com directly. Enterprise customers should plan on this path rather than a one-click exit.1Sprout Social. How Do I Cancel My Account

Refunds and What You Still Owe

The refund rules depend entirely on how your plan is billed, and mid-term cancellations on annual plans carry real cost.

Annual Plan Paid Upfront

If you paid the full year in one lump sum, canceling mid-term triggers no refund or credit for the unused months. You keep access until the next annual pay date, but the money already paid stays with Sprout. To stop the plan from renewing into another year, cancel through the billing page before that renewal date.3Sprout Social. Sprout Social Terms of Service

Annual Plan Billed Monthly

This one is worse. There’s no refund for fees already paid, and you are still required to pay all remaining monthly charges through the end of the annual term. To avoid auto-renewal into a new annual period, send written notice at least 30 days before the current term ends, by emailing your Customer Success Manager or successteam@sproutsocial.com.3Sprout Social. Invoice-Based Plans

The same 30-day advance notice applies. Email the cancellation request to your Customer Success Manager or successteam@sproutsocial.com before that window closes, or the plan auto-renews.3Sprout Social. Sprout Social Terms of Service

The Only Refund Exception

Sprout issues a prorated refund of prepaid fees only if you terminate because Sprout materially breached its terms of service and failed to fix the problem within 30 days of receiving written notice from you. Outside that scenario, no refunds.3Sprout Social. Sprout Social Terms of Service

Scheduled Posts Stop Immediately

When the cancellation goes through, every scheduled post is killed and will not publish. Connected social profiles disconnect, reports become inaccessible, and stored files are deactivated.1Sprout Social. How Do I Cancel My Account Sprout will not publish anything on your behalf after deactivation, even if time is left in the billing period. If you have a content queue, move it to the networks’ native schedulers or another tool before you cancel.

Your Data Sits for 90 Days, Then It’s Gone

Sprout keeps account data for 90 days after closure or termination. Reactivate inside that window and your settings and historical data come back. After 90 days, Sprout permanently deletes everything from its servers.4Sprout Social. Subscriber Data Retention for the Sprout Social Platform

If you want your data erased sooner, email privacy@sproutsocial.com to request early permanent deletion. Sprout processes these requests under its data processing agreement and applicable privacy laws, including GDPR and CCPA.4Sprout Social. Subscriber Data Retention for the Sprout Social Platform
