To cancel a Vodafone contract, request a switching code by text, call 191, or use the My Vodafone app. Which route fits depends on whether you’re leaving a mobile plan or broadband, and whether you want to keep your phone number. Cancelling after your minimum term is straightforward; leaving early means paying a termination charge based on the months you have left. Notice is typically 30 days.
What to Have Ready Before You Start
Pull together the account holder’s name, your account number (on a recent bill or in the My Vodafone app), and the security PIN or password you set up when you joined. Check your latest bill for how many months remain on your minimum term, because that figure decides whether you’ll owe an early termination charge.
If you’re moving to another mobile provider and want to keep your number, you need a Porting Authorisation Code (PAC). If you’d rather start fresh with a new number, you need a Service Termination Authorisation Code (STAC). Both are requested by text and usually arrive within minutes.

Switching and Keeping Your Number
Text PAC to 65075 from your Vodafone phone. You’ll receive your PAC along with details of any early termination charge that applies. Give the code to your new provider when you sign up, and they handle the switch. Your Vodafone account closes automatically once it completes. A PAC is valid for 30 days, and you can request a fresh one if it expires.1Ofcom. Switching – Mobile
Don’t cancel your Vodafone account first. If you terminate service before your new provider processes the switch, you lose the number.
Leaving Without Keeping Your Number
Text STAC to 75075 instead. Give the code to your new provider and they arrange the disconnection. The process mirrors the PAC route, minus the number transfer.1Ofcom. Switching – Mobile
Cancelling Without Moving to Another Carrier
Call 191 from your Vodafone handset, or 0333 304 0191 from another line. You can also cancel through the My Vodafone app or website. Select the option to leave Vodafone to reach the cancellations team, and expect a retention offer before anything is processed. You’ll need to give 30 days’ notice once your minimum term has passed.2Vodafone. Vodafone Home Broadband and Phone Terms and Conditions
Cancelling Vodafone Broadband
Broadband works differently. Since September 2024, Ofcom’s One Touch Switch means you only contact your new broadband provider. They take over the switch, and Vodafone automatically sends you the relevant switching information, including any early termination charge.3Ofcom. Simpler and Quicker Broadband Switching Is Here
Under One Touch Switch you won’t pay notice-period charges beyond the switch date, so you’re not billed by both providers at once. If the switch goes wrong or you lose service for more than one working day, your provider must compensate you.3Ofcom. Simpler and Quicker Broadband Switching Is Here
If you’re stopping broadband without moving to a new provider, call 191 and give 30 days’ notice. The same applies if you’re moving abroad, since Vodafone can’t provide service at a non-UK address.2Vodafone. Vodafone Home Broadband and Phone Terms and Conditions
The 14-Day Cooling-Off Period
If you signed up online, over the phone, or by any method that wasn’t in a shop, you have 14 days to change your mind and cancel without an early termination fee. For phone or broadband plans, the 14 days run from the day you entered the contract. You’ll pay for any service you actually used in that window, but not the full termination charge.2Vodafone. Vodafone Home Broadband and Phone Terms and Conditions
If you bought a phone as part of the deal and signed up in-store, this cooling-off right generally doesn’t apply unless the handset is faulty.
Early Termination Fees
Leaving before your minimum term ends means paying an early termination fee. The calculation starts from the total of your remaining monthly charges. Vodafone removes VAT, subtracts any savings the company makes from you leaving early (such as payments to suppliers), applies a 1% discount for receiving the money as a lump sum, then adds VAT back to reach the final figure.4Vodafone. Vodafone Home Broadband and Phone Price Plan
Vodafone tells you the exact amount when you request your PAC or STAC by text, which is a reason to use the text-to-switch route even if you plan to call afterward.
Mid-Contract Price Rises Can Be a Free Exit
If Vodafone raises your price mid-contract and the increase wasn’t made clear before you signed up, Ofcom’s rules give you one month’s notice and the right to leave penalty-free.5Ofcom. Ofcom Bans Mid-Contract Price Rises Linked to Inflation Ofcom has also banned mid-contract price rises linked to inflation, so newer contracts should have fixed or clearly stated pricing throughout the minimum term.
If you get a price-increase notice and the rise wasn’t spelled out in your original terms, that’s your window. Act within the notice period, because once the new price takes effect, you’ve effectively accepted it.
Outstanding Device Payments
If you’re paying off a phone through a separate device plan, cancelling your airtime contract doesn’t clear the device balance. The two are typically independent agreements, and you’ll still owe the remaining instalments on the handset. When you cancel, check whether the device loan continues on its original schedule or whether the balance falls due immediately. Vodafone’s terms note that certain services like insurance stay active until the device loan is fully paid off.6Vodafone. How to Cancel Your Account and Leave Vodafone
Returning Your Router
Broadband customers need to return the Vodafone router after cancellation. You can drop it off at any Vodafone store free of charge.7Vodafone. What to Do With Your Old Router Don’t leave it sitting in a cupboard. If you fail to return the hardware, Vodafone can add equipment charges to your final bill.
Your Final Bill and Direct Debit
Once the account closes, Vodafone issues a final bill covering outstanding usage, the remaining notice period, and any early termination fee. It’s normally collected through your existing Direct Debit, so don’t cancel that mandate before the final bill clears. If you do, you’re left arranging a manual payment, or dealing with Vodafone chasing the balance.
If the Cancellation Goes Wrong
If Vodafone mishandles your cancellation, overcharges you, or refuses to release your number, raise a formal complaint through customer service on 191 or via the complaints form on their website.2Vodafone.
