How to Change Your Name on Your License: Documents, Fees, and Deadlines

To change your name on your driver’s license, first update your name with the Social Security Administration, wait a day or two for the federal database to sync, then take the court order, marriage certificate, or divorce decree that authorized the change to your state’s motor vehicle office along with proof of your identity. Most states give you 10 to 30 days from the date of the legal name change to get it done.

Start With Social Security

State motor vehicle agencies verify names in real time against the Social Security Administration through a system called Social Security Online Verification.1AAMVA. Social Security Online Verification (SSOLV) Service If your new name isn’t on file with the SSA, the clerk can’t process the license. This is the most common reason people are turned away.

Depending on your situation, you may be able to update your name with the SSA online. Otherwise, complete Form SS-5 and submit it to a local Social Security office.2Social Security Administration. After the SSA processes the update, wait at least 24 to 48 hours before going to the DMV. Some states recommend up to 72 hours. Showing up before the databases sync means the verification system won’t find a match, and you’ll be sent home.

Documents to Bring to the DMV

Bring original or certified copies of the legal document that authorized the change. Photocopies are almost always rejected. Which document depends on how the name changed:

  • Marriage: a certified marriage certificate issued by the county clerk where the license was filed.
  • Divorce: a divorce decree that specifically includes a name restoration order. Not every decree does, so check yours before you go.
  • Court order: a signed order granting the name change, which covers personal preference, gender transition, or any reason not tied to marriage or divorce.

You’ll also need identity proof such as your current driver’s license, an unexpired passport, or a birth certificate. If a document is missing or damaged, request a replacement from the issuing court or vital records office before your appointment.

Extra Paperwork if You Have a REAL ID

If your license is REAL ID-compliant, the federal standard requires more documentation. Under the REAL ID Act, you must present proof of your Social Security number, proof of your residential address such as a utility bill or mortgage statement, and valid proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful status.4U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The catch: you may need to show a complete chain of documents linking your birth name to your current legal name. If your birth certificate says “Jane Smith” and your license now reads “Jane Johnson,” the marriage certificate bridging the two has to come with you. If you’ve changed your name more than once, through a first marriage, a divorce, and a second marriage, every document in the chain has to be there. This trips up people who changed their names years ago and no longer keep every certificate on hand.

At the Counter

Most states require an in-person visit so the DMV can scan your original documents and take a new photograph. A few states now allow online name-change applications, but even those typically require you to mail or upload certified copies. Check your state’s motor vehicle website before going, since many offices require or strongly encourage appointments.

Each state has its own application form, usually available for download or at the office. It asks for your new legal name, the name currently on your license, your address, your license class, and biographical information. Spell your new name exactly as it appears on your updated Social Security record. A missing hyphen or a middle initial where the full name belongs can cause the verification system to reject the application.

The clerk will review your documents, run the Social Security check, and take a new photo. Most states also require a basic vision screening. The fee for a corrected license generally runs $10 to $40 depending on the state and license type. You’ll leave with a temporary paper license valid for driving and identification while your permanent card is manufactured and mailed, usually within two to four weeks.

The Deadline Your State Sets

Most states give you between 10 and 30 days after a legal name change to update your license. The clock starts on the date of the event: the date your marriage certificate was issued, the date the divorce was finalized, or the date the court signed your name change order. Driving with an outdated name after the deadline can result in a citation in some states and creates problems at traffic stops when the officer’s records don’t match the card you hand over.

Even where enforcement is lenient, an outdated license causes friction with banks, airports, and employers who verify identity. Fixing the license first keeps those checks from flagging a mismatch later.

Voter Registration Updates at the Same Time

Federal law requires every state motor vehicle office to offer voter registration as part of any license application or update.6Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 52 USC 20504 – Voter Registration When you change your name on your license, the application counts as an update to your voter registration unless you opt out.7U.S. Department of Justice. The National Voter Registration Act of 1993 (NVRA) If your name doesn’t match the voter rolls at your polling place, you could be delayed or forced to cast a provisional ballot, so handling it at the DMV saves a separate trip to the local election office.

Other Records to Update Next

Once your license is done, work through the records that reference it:

  • Vehicle title and registration. Your state’s motor vehicle office handles these updates too, and in some states you can take care of them during the same visit.
  • Passport. The State Department accepts name changes by mail using Form DS-5504 if your passport was issued within the last year, or Form DS-82 for older passports.8USAGov. How to Change Your Name and What Government Agencies to Notify
  • Insurance policies. Auto, health, and life insurers all need the update; a mismatch between your license and your policy can complicate claims.
  • Banks and financial accounts. Most require an in-person visit with your new license and a certified copy of the name change document.
