To check whether your address has been changed, look at each system that stores it: the U.S. Postal Service, the IRS, the Social Security Administration, your state DMV, your voter registration, and your three credit reports. Each keeps its own record, and a change in one does not carry over to the others. Checking each separately is the only reliable way to catch a discrepancy — or an address change you did not authorize, which is a common early sign of identity theft.
Check Your USPS Change of Address Status
If you filed a change of address with USPS, your receipt shows a 16-digit confirmation code. Online filings also carry a $1.25 identity verification charge on the card you used.1United States Postal Service. Standard Forward Mail To see the current status and effective date, open the “Manage a Change of Address” tool on the USPS website and enter that code.2United States Postal Service. Change of Address – The Basics
USPS also mails two paper confirmations whenever a change is filed. A Move Validation Letter goes to the old address, and a Customer Notification Letter goes to the new one. Both include the same 16-digit code.2United States Postal Service. Change of Address – The Basics If one of these arrives and you did not file anything, treat it as a warning: someone may have redirected your mail. The steps for handling that are further down.
Standard forwarding for a permanent move runs 12 months. After it ends, USPS returns mail to senders for another six months with a label showing your new address before treating anything sent to the old address as undeliverable.1United States Postal Service. Standard Forward Mail If your online status shows forwarding is close to expiring, that is your cue to update your address directly with banks, insurers, and anyone else who mails you.
Use Informed Delivery to Watch Your Mail
Informed Delivery is a free USPS service that emails you a daily preview of the letter-sized mail scheduled for your address, with grayscale images of the envelope fronts. You can also check the dashboard through the website or mobile app. Signing up itself requires identity and address verification, which confirms that USPS still associates you with that address.3USPS. Informed Delivery – Mail and Package Notifications
Once you’re enrolled, the daily preview is a practical check. If your digest suddenly goes empty after a supposed move, forwarding may not be set up the way you think. If pieces show in the preview but never land in your mailbox, that points to a delivery problem worth raising with your local post office.
Check the Address on File with Government Agencies
Federal and state agencies each maintain their own address record. You need to look at each one.
IRS
Log into your IRS Online Account, which uses ID.me for identity verification, to see the address the IRS has for you.4Internal Revenue Service. Social Security Administration
Sign into your personal my Social Security account to see and update your mailing address. It is the same address SSA uses for benefit statements and your annual SSA-1099.6Social Security Administration. my Social Security Direct-deposit payments usually keep coming even if the address is stale, but paper correspondence will not.
State DMV
Most states require you to report a move to the motor vehicle department within a set window, commonly 10 to 60 days depending on the state. Many DMVs let you log in with your license number and view the address on your driver’s license online. Because that address is used for insurance, law enforcement, and identity checks, it matters more than most people realize. Replacement license fees for an address update generally run from about $11 to $65 by state.
Passports
If you already hold a valid passport and have no application pending, you do not need to update your address with the State Department. A passport does not show a home address. If you do have an application in process, call 1-877-487-2778 to give them your new mailing address so the new passport reaches you.7U.S. Department of State. Change or Correct a Passport
Check Your Credit Reports for Addresses You Don’t Recognize
Your credit reports list every address that lenders and other creditors have reported for you. Pull all three, free every week, at AnnualCreditReport.com from Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion.8AnnualCreditReport.com. Review Your Credit Report
Go to the personal information section and read each address carefully. Every one should match somewhere you actually lived or used for mail. An address you do not recognize can be an early sign that someone opened an account in your name or redirected your financial mail. You have the right to dispute the entry with the credit bureau, and you can contact the creditor that reported it to find out whether a fraudulent account is attached. If unfamiliar accounts appear alongside the unfamiliar address, move to the identity theft steps below.
Check Your Voter Registration Address
Your voter registration ties you to a specific precinct and polling place. Look up your record on your state’s Secretary of State or elections office website; most portals need only your name and date of birth. The address on file determines where you can vote and whether a mail-in ballot will reach you.
If it still shows an old address, you may be assigned to the wrong precinct or miss election mail entirely. Registration deadlines commonly fall 15 to 30 days before an election, so check well ahead. Some states update your voter registration automatically when you change your address at the DMV; others require you to re-register on your own.
What to Do If Your Address Was Changed Without Your Permission
An address change you did not make — showing up as a surprise USPS validation letter, mail that stops arriving, or an unfamiliar address on a credit report — should be treated as possible identity theft. Criminals reroute mail to intercept bank statements, credit offers, and government checks. Act quickly.
