The quickest way to check your NIN number is to dial *346# from the phone you registered with during enrollment. Your 11-digit National Identification Number appears on screen within seconds, and it works on any handset with a cellular signal. If that SIM is no longer active, you can use the NIMC Mobile ID app or walk into any enrollment center with your biometrics.
Dial *346# From Your Registered Phone
This is the fastest option and needs no internet. Dial *346# on the mobile number you linked to your NIN during enrollment.1National Identity Management Commission. SMS Services A short menu appears. Choose the NIN retrieval option, and the system sends your 11-digit number back as a text response.
Because the request runs over standard cellular signals, it works in places with no data coverage as long as you have basic reception. NIMC lists a ₦20 airtime charge per retrieval, though the federal government has at times waived the fee during NIN-SIM linkage campaigns.1National Identity Management Commission. SMS Services
One strict condition: you must dial from the exact number you registered with. If you’ve lost that SIM or changed lines, the code won’t return your NIN, and you’ll need one of the methods below.
Check Your NIN in the NIMC Mobile ID App
The NIMC MWS Mobile ID app stores a digital version of your national identity card on your phone, including your NIN and a scannable QR code. Download it from the link at nimc.gov.ng or search for it on the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.2National Identity Management Commission. Mobile Digital ID
First-time setup needs two things: your NIN and the phone number you enrolled with. NIMC sends a one-time password to that number to confirm it’s you. After setup, the app sits behind a PIN on the lock screen.2National Identity Management Commission. Mobile Digital ID
To view your NIN, tap “Show My ID” on the home screen. Your card appears with your photo, your 11-digit number, and a QR code. You can toggle between “Basic ID” and “Full ID” to control how much personal information displays when someone scans your code. Once the app has synced, the card stays available offline.2National Identity Management Commission. Mobile Digital ID
The catch is the same as the USSD method: the initial OTP goes to your enrolled number, so if that line is gone, you can’t complete setup.
Visit an NIMC Enrollment Center
If you’ve lost your registered SIM, can’t install the app, or would rather deal with a person, walk into any NIMC enrollment center. There are over 1,000 locations across Nigeria, and you can find the nearest one at nimc.gov.ng/enrolment-centres.
Bring your original enrollment slip if you still have it. That slip carries a Transaction ID staff use to pull your record from the national database.3National Identity Management Commission. NIN Issuance If the slip is gone, staff can still find you through biometric verification, typically a fingerprint scan matched against the central repository. Once your identity is confirmed, the center prints a NIN slip you can take with you as proof of identity.
Expect a wait at busy centers, especially in urban areas. Going early on a weekday morning tends to shorten the queue.
What to Do If Your Enrolled SIM Is Gone
The USSD code and the app both depend on the phone number you originally registered. If that line is no longer active, the most reliable route is biometric retrieval at an enrollment center, as above.
You can also update the phone number tied to your NIN record through the NIMC self-service portal at selfservicemodification.nimc.gov.ng. The request needs a police report documenting the loss of your old SIM, and the new number must be entered in international format without a leading zero after the country code (+234).4National Identity Management Commission. Self-Service Modifications You must use the same device and browser you originally used to access the portal, or the system will block the login.
One knock-on effect worth planning around: telecom providers now require your NIN before they’ll process a SIM replacement. That usually means retrieving your number from NIMC first, then going to your mobile carrier.
If You Haven’t Enrolled Yet
You can’t check a NIN that doesn’t exist. If you’ve never enrolled, visit any NIMC center with at least one valid identity document. Accepted documents include a Nigerian international passport, voter’s card, driver’s license, birth certificate, or certificate of origin, among others. Enrollment is free.3National Identity Management Commission. NIN Issuance
Staff will capture your ten fingerprints, a head-to-shoulder photograph, your digital signature, and your biographical details. The system runs a de-duplication check against the national database to confirm you haven’t been enrolled before. If everything clears, you get a Transaction ID slip on the spot. Your actual NIN is usually ready within 7 to 14 working days, depending on network availability and the verification queue.3National Identity Management Commission. NIN Issuance
For minors under 16, a parent or guardian must be present and provide their own NIN slip. If a guardian rather than a parent is enrolling the child, proof of guardianship is also required, along with the child’s birth certificate or statutory age declaration.3National Identity Management Commission.
