How to Complete and Submit the CPS Salary Lane Adjustment Form

The CPS lane change form is the application Chicago Public Schools educators use to move to a higher salary lane after earning an advanced degree or additional graduate credits. You download it from the “My Career” section of HR4U, attach official transcripts, and send the package to Employee Services. File within 60 calendar days of finishing your coursework and your raise is backdated to your completion date; file later and it only takes effect the day CPS receives your paperwork.

Where to Get the Form and What to Gather

The form lives in “My Career” on HR4U, the district’s employee self-service portal.1Chicago Teachers Union. Advancing Lanes Through NTL Before you open it, pull together:

  • Your CPS Employee ID.
  • Official transcripts from every university whose credits you’re claiming. Photocopies and student-printed copies are not accepted.
  • Learning Hub completion pages if you’re claiming Lane Placement Credits instead of, or in addition to, university credits.1Chicago Teachers Union. Advancing Lanes Through NTL
  • A list of every course you’re claiming, with the course name exactly as it appears on the transcript, the institution, and the credit count.

Order transcripts early. Many universities take one to three weeks to produce an official copy, and that processing time eats into your 60-day window if you wait until grades post.

Filling Out and Submitting the Form

Enter every course exactly as it reads on the transcript. A mismatch between a course name on the form and the same course on the official transcript is one of the most common reasons applications come back for corrections. List the total graduate credits you currently hold so CPS can place you in the correct target lane.

Submit the completed form with your official transcripts. CPS internal mail works for the paper package, and the form itself carries the routing instructions.1Chicago Teachers Union. Advancing Lanes Through NTL If your university offers electronic official transcripts, those can go directly to the Employee Services email address. Keep a copy of everything you send and note the date, so you have a record if the file goes missing or a resubmission is needed.

The 60-Day Retroactive Pay Window

Under CPS Policy 302.8, when you file determines when the raise takes effect:2Chicago Public Schools. Compensation and Pay Plan

  • Filed within 60 calendar days of completion: your increase is backdated to the date you finished the degree or the qualifying coursework. Any pay periods that passed before processing come to you as a lump sum.
  • Filed after 60 calendar days: your increase takes effect the day the Talent Office receives your completed application and documentation. Pay periods between your completion date and your filing date do not come back.

The completion date is the date your degree was conferred, or the date you finished the final course that pushed you past the 15, 30, or 45-hour threshold. If your summer course ended August 5, the 60-day clock started August 5, not the date the grade posted or the date you ordered the transcript.

Which Lane You Qualify For

The form asks for a target lane, so you need to know which one your credits support. There are six, and each step up requires either a higher degree or a set number of graduate semester hours beyond a master’s:

  • Lane I: a bachelor’s degree. Vocational teachers who meet Department of Education to Careers requirements and teach in a vocational reimbursable program may qualify without a traditional bachelor’s.
  • Lane II: a master’s from an accredited college or university. Special education teachers in a special education position can qualify with 30 semester hours of approved graduate credit in special education instead of a full master’s.
  • Lane III: master’s plus 15 semester hours of graduate credit beyond the master’s.
  • Lane IV: master’s plus 30 semester hours beyond the master’s.
  • Lane V: master’s plus 45 semester hours beyond the master’s.
  • Lane VI: a Ph.D. or Ed.D. Medical and theology degrees do not qualify. Since July 2016, Clinical Doctorates for current clinicians and Juris Doctorates are also eligible.

All graduate credits must come from a college or university fully accredited by a regional accrediting association, and each course must be in a field for which Illinois offers a teaching license.2Chicago Public Schools. Compensation and Pay Plan That second requirement catches people out. A graduate course in a subject Illinois doesn’t license teachers in will not count, even from a regionally accredited school.

Using Lane Placement Credits Instead of University Credits

You don’t have to earn every credit at a university. CPS recognizes Lane Placement Credits from approved professional development, including courses registered through the CPS Learning Hub. Fifteen hours of qualifying professional development equals one LPC.3Chicago Teachers Union Foundation. Quest Center FAQ and Disclaimer There is no cap on how many LPCs you can earn from a single provider within a fiscal year, but you must attend the entire session for a course to count; partial attendance does not. When you use Learning Hub or Quest Center courses on your form, print the course completion page from the Learning Hub in place of a university transcript.1Chicago Teachers Union. How Long Processing Takes

The 2024–28 Collective Bargaining Agreement requires the Talent Office to process lane placement adjustments within 45 days of receiving a proper claim with official transcripts. For Lane II and Lane VI changes, which are triggered by a conferred degree, the 45-day clock starts once the office has both your application and the transcript certifying degree completion. For Lanes III, IV, and V, it starts once the office has your application and transcripts verifying all the qualifying credit hours.4Chicago Teachers Union. 36-6 Step and Lane Adjustments – CTU-CPS 2024-28 Contract

If your application is returned for corrections, a mismatched course name, a missing transcript, or an unclear credit total, the 45-day processing period resets when you resubmit. Once the adjustment goes through, the new lane appears on your pay stub, and any retroactive amount arrives as a lump sum.
