To submit an SNHU student loan increase request, contact Student Financial Services directly. Online students can call 877-455-7648 or email studentfinance@snhu.edu; campus students should email SFScampus@snhu.edu. The office will confirm your remaining federal eligibility, tell you what to submit, and walk you through revising your loan amount upward, provided you haven’t already hit federal borrowing limits or your cost of attendance.1Southern New Hampshire University. Check Whether You Have Room to Borrow More
Before you call, figure out whether federal rules even allow more borrowing. The Department of Education caps how much you can take in Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans each academic year. For dependent undergraduates, the annual limits are $5,500 for first-year students (with a $3,500 subsidized cap), $6,500 for second-year students ($4,500 subsidized), and $7,500 from third year onward ($5,500 subsidized).
Independent undergraduates, and dependent students whose parents can’t get a PLUS Loan, qualify for higher annual limits: $9,500 first year, $10,500 second year, and $12,500 from the third year on. Graduate students can borrow up to $20,500 per year in Direct Unsubsidized Loans.2Federal Student Aid. Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans
There are lifetime aggregate caps too. Dependent undergraduates top out at $31,000; independent undergraduates at $57,500. No more than $23,000 of either total can be subsidized.3Federal Student Aid. Annual and Aggregate Loan Limits If prior borrowing has you near either ceiling, an increase may not be available no matter what SNHU is willing to certify.
Even under those federal caps, your total aid from all sources can’t exceed SNHU’s published cost of attendance. The COA bundles tuition, fees, books, and living expenses and functions as a hard ceiling.4Southern New Hampshire University. Cost of Attendance and Academic Year Information If your existing aid already equals your COA, you’ll need a budget appeal before any increase is possible.
How to Submit the Request
SNHU’s student loans page instructs students to “contact Student Financial Services” to revise a loan offer.5Southern New Hampshire University. Student Loans In practice, the process runs like this:
- Call or email Student Financial Services first. Say you want to increase your federal loan amount for a specific academic year. The office will confirm your remaining eligibility and tell you exactly what documents to submit.
- Have your numbers ready. That means your SNHU student ID, the academic year, and a specific dollar amount tied to real costs (tuition, books, living expenses). A vague request slows things down.
- Specify the loan type. Subsidized loans don’t accrue interest while you’re enrolled at least half-time but are limited to students with demonstrated financial need. Additional borrowing beyond your subsidized eligibility comes as unsubsidized funds.
- Identify the term. SNHU runs six 8-week terms per year for online undergraduates and five 10-week terms per year for online graduate students. Tell the office which term or terms the increase should apply to.6Southern New Hampshire University. Academic Calendars
- Upload any requested documents through the mySNHU portal. PDFs and high-resolution images work best.
Confirm receipt through the portal or by asking for email confirmation. Don’t assume the request is in the queue until you have proof it arrived.
Requirements That Can Delay Disbursement
Approval and disbursement are two different things. First-time Direct Loan borrowers at SNHU must complete entrance counseling and sign a Master Promissory Note at studentaid.gov before funds release. If you finished both when you first enrolled and haven’t changed schools, you probably don’t need to redo them; SNHU uses a multi-year MPN that covers additional borrowing for up to 10 years.7Southern New Hampshire University. Grants, Scholarships and Loans
You also have to be meeting satisfactory academic progress. SNHU measures this through grade and completion-rate standards, and falling below them can freeze your aid eligibility entirely.8Southern New Hampshire University. Consumer Information Recent failed courses or a slipping pace need to be resolved before an increase will process.
If Your Aid Already Equals Your Cost of Attendance
When existing aid matches the COA, the only way to add more borrowing is to raise the COA itself through a budget appeal. Federal law gives financial aid administrators authority to make these case-by-case adjustments under the professional judgment provisions of the Higher Education Act.9Federal Student Aid. Special Cases
Common qualifying situations include job loss or a drop in family income, significant medical or dental costs not covered by insurance, dependent care expenses, disability-related costs, and sudden housing changes including homelessness. The list isn’t exhaustive; SNHU can consider any documented circumstance that makes your actual costs exceed the standard budget.9Federal Student Aid. Special Cases Documentation is the key word. Bring paperwork: medical bills, a layoff notice, a lease, childcare invoices. A general complaint that things are expensive won’t move a budget appeal.
PLUS Loans When Direct Loans Aren’t Enough
If you’ve hit your Direct Loan ceiling, PLUS Loans are a separate channel. Parents of dependent undergraduates can borrow a Parent PLUS Loan, and graduate students can borrow a Grad PLUS Loan, each up to the remaining cost of attendance. PLUS Loans require a credit check, and borrowers with an adverse credit history may be denied or required to meet additional conditions.10Federal Student Aid. PLUS Loans
They’re more expensive than Direct Loans. The fixed rate for the 2025–2026 academic year is 8.94%, plus a loan origination fee.11Federal Student Aid. Federal Interest Rates and Fees First-time PLUS borrowers at SNHU also have to complete PLUS-specific entrance counseling and sign a PLUS Master Promissory Note before disbursement.7Southern New Hampshire University. Grants, Scholarships and Loans Student Financial Services can start a PLUS request alongside or instead of a Direct Loan increase.
What Happens After Approval
Once SNHU approves the increase, the new amount appears as pending financial aid on your student account in mySNHU. Funds disburse on SNHU’s scheduled release dates for your term, not immediately on approval. The university applies the money to outstanding tuition and fees first; anything left over is refunded to you.
Credit balance refunds go through BankMobile Disbursements.12Southern New Hampshire University. Financial Aid Offer Terms and Conditions You set your refund preference at BankMobile’s site using a personal code SNHU sends you. Options typically include transfer to an existing bank account, deposit into a BankMobile checking account, or in some cases a paper check.13BankMobile Disbursements. Refund Choices Transfers to an outside bank usually clear one to two business days after SNHU releases funds. Set your preference before the disbursement date so the money doesn’t sit waiting.
