How to Complete the John Lewis Returns Form: Steps, Fees, and Timing

You have 30 days from the date of purchase to complete a John Lewis return, provided the item is unused, in its original condition, and accompanied by proof of purchase.1John Lewis & Partners. Returns and Refunds Small items go back free by post or in person. Large non-faulty items carry a £29.95 collection fee. Whether you plan to post the parcel or walk it into a shop, the process starts in your John Lewis account online.

What Qualifies for a Return

The 30 days runs from the purchase date, not from delivery. The item must be unused with all labels and tags still attached. Keep the original packaging if you can. Returning without it won’t automatically disqualify you, but the product has to be in a state John Lewis can resell.

Proof of purchase is non-negotiable. A till receipt, order confirmation email, or delivery note will do. Without one of these, John Lewis won’t process the return.2John Lewis & Partners. Returns and Refunds – Gift Returns For online orders, the fastest way to pull up the transaction is your order number, which sits in your confirmation email and in your account.

Items You Can’t Send Back

Some categories fall outside the standard policy unless they arrive faulty:

  • Personalised, cut, engraved, or made-to-order products
  • Food, hampers, and other perishables
  • Live plants and trees, including Christmas trees
  • Beauty products once the seal is broken or the product has been used
  • Pierced earrings, for hygiene reasons
  • Mattresses, unless a specific supplier promotion says otherwise
  • Computer software that has been opened or redeemed

The hygiene rules are strict. A broken seal on a beauty product, or pierced earrings out of their sterile wrapping, disqualifies the return even if the item looks untouched.1John Lewis & Partners. Returns and Refunds

Returning an Online Order Step by Step

Every online return goes through the John Lewis website or app first. There are five steps:

  1. Sign in, open your order history, and select “Order details” on the relevant order. If you checked out as a guest, enter your order number and email on the returns page instead.
  2. Choose “Return an item,” pick the product, and select a reason from the dropdown.
  3. Choose your drop-off method: a John Lewis shop, a Waitrose shop, a Royal Mail Post Office, an Evri drop-off point, or a Click & Collect booth.
  4. John Lewis will email a printable label or a QR code for scanning at the drop-off point. Both are also available from your order details online.
  5. Repackage the item, attach the label if you printed one, and drop it off.

Small items are free to return by any of these methods.3John Lewis & Partners. How to Return Your Item

Drop-Off Limits

Royal Mail accepts parcels up to 61 × 46 × 46 cm and 20 kg. Evri accepts parcels up to 120 × 100 cm and 15 kg. Both scan the QR code on site if you haven’t printed a label at home.3John Lewis & Partners. How to Return Your Item You can also walk into any John Lewis or Waitrose shop and hand the parcel to staff at the welcome desk.

Unless you’re handing the item directly to a partner at a shop, ask for proof of postage and keep it until your refund is confirmed. If the parcel goes missing in transit, that receipt is the only evidence you sent it.

Tech and Electrical Items

Tech and electrical returns in-store go to the specialist electrical returns point, not the welcome desk.3John Lewis & Partners. How to Return Your Item Staff there can inspect the product and check for data or manufacturer registration issues before processing the refund.

Returning an In-Store Purchase

Take the item and your receipt to any John Lewis shop within 30 days. Go to the welcome desk or ask a partner to direct you to the returns point. Staff will check the item’s condition and process the refund or exchange on the spot.

Large Items and the Collection Fee

Sofas, appliances, and other bulky items that can’t be posted are collected from your home. Collection is free if the item is damaged or faulty. For change-of-mind returns, John Lewis charges a flat £29.95.1John Lewis & Partners. Returns and Refunds Book the collection through your online account the same way you’d start any other return; the system will walk you through choosing a pickup date once it identifies the item as oversized.

Returning a Gift

You can return a gift within 30 days at any John Lewis shop, but you still need the receipt or delivery note.2John Lewis & Partners. Returns and Refunds – Gift Returns Tell staff at the till that it was a gift. The refund comes as a John Lewis gift card or as an exchange for another product.

If you post the gift back instead of returning it in person, John Lewis can only refund the original purchaser, not you.2John Lewis & Partners. Returns and Refunds – Gift Returns For a gift recipient, in-store is the only practical route. The item must be unused, in original condition, with tags attached. Phones, tablets, and computers that have been registered with the manufacturer or that hold personal data are not eligible for gift returns.

Exchanges

Exchanges follow the same 30-day window and condition rules. Online, the simplest approach is to return the original for a refund and place a fresh order for the replacement; the site has no direct swap function. In-store, staff can handle the exchange at the till in one visit.

When the Refund Lands

Allow up to 14 days from the day you send the item for John Lewis to process the refund.4John Lewis & Partners. Returns and Refunds – Refund Time That window covers transit, warehouse inspection, and processing. The money goes back to the original payment method, whether that was a credit card, debit card, or gift card. Gift-card payments are restored to the card rather than paid out as cash.

Once the refund is processed, John Lewis emails a confirmation. Expect up to five further days for the credit to show on your bank or card statement.1John Lewis & Partners. Returns and Refunds

Faulty Items

Faulty products are treated differently from change-of-mind returns. If your item develops a manufacturing fault within 30 days, take it back with proof of purchase and John Lewis will exchange or refund it.1John Lewis & Partners. Returns and Refunds This applies even to categories that are normally non-returnable, so a faulty personalised item or defective mattress can still go back. Large faulty items are collected free, so the £29.95 fee doesn’t apply.

Past 30 days, your statutory rights still work. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 gives you a short-term right to reject faulty goods within the first 30 days for a full refund. After that, the retailer has one opportunity to repair or replace the item; if that fails, you can claim a refund, though a deduction may be made for the use you’ve had.5UK Government.
