How to Extend Your Visa in Indonesia: Documents, Fees, and Overstays

To extend your visa in Indonesia, apply at the nearest immigration office (Kantor Imigrasi) at least seven days before your current stay expires, or use the online portal at evisa.imigrasi.go.id if you entered on an electronic Visa on Arrival. A Visa on Arrival can be extended once for another 30 days at a cost of IDR 500,000, while a C1 Visit Visa (formerly the B211A) can be extended twice, 60 days at a time, at IDR 2,000,000 per extension. Miss the deadline and you owe IDR 1,000,000 for every day you overstay.

Which Visas Qualify for an Extension

Two entry categories can be extended from inside Indonesia: the Visa on Arrival (including the electronic e-VOA) and the Single Entry Visitor Visa, now called the C1 Visit Visa. If your passport carries either of these, you can ask for more time without leaving the country.

Visa-free entries are a different matter. Nationals of countries that qualify for Indonesia’s 30-day free visa arrangement cannot extend that stay under any circumstances. If you came in visa-free and want to stay longer, your only choices are to leave and re-enter on a Visa on Arrival, or apply for a C1 Visitor Visa through an Indonesian consulate abroad. Assuming otherwise is expensive: you won’t find out until you’re standing at the immigration counter.

How Much Extra Time You Get

The Visa on Arrival gives you 30 days on entry and one 30-day extension, for a maximum of 60 days total. There is no second extension available, whatever the reason.1Ministry of Immigration and Corrections. General Information and FAQ

The C1 Visitor Visa is more generous. Each extension adds up to 60 days, and you can extend twice, giving a maximum cumulative stay of 180 days from your original entry.2The Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia The Hague. Single Entry Visit Visa via the Indonesian Embassy in The Hague Once you hit 180 days, you must leave Indonesia and apply for a new visa from outside, unless you convert to a different permit.

When to Start

Begin at least seven days before your current visa expires. Immigration offices typically need around five working days to process an extension, and weekends and Indonesian public holidays do not count.3Directorate General of Immigration. General Information and FAQ

If your visa expires while your extension is still being processed, the overstay fine applies anyway. That is IDR 1,000,000 per day.4GOV.UK. Indonesia – Visa Overstay and Deportation A two-day processing delay costs you IDR 2,000,000 before you can even collect your passport. Build in a buffer.

Documents You Will Need

Both visa types require the same core paperwork:

  • Clear copies of the passport biographical page and the page showing your current entry stamp or visa sticker
  • Proof of an onward or return flight out of Indonesia

The C1 Visitor Visa adds a sponsor requirement. A local guarantor, either an Indonesian citizen or a registered organization, must vouch for your stay by providing a guarantee letter and a copy of their Indonesian identity card (KTP).5Directorate General of Immigration. How to Apply

In Person at an Immigration Office

Go to the Kantor Imigrasi closest to where you are staying. Plan for three visits over several days. On the first, you submit documents and receive a receipt with a scheduled date for biometrics. On the second, you sit for a photograph and fingerprints. On the third, you collect your passport with the new stay period stamped inside. Some offices manage this in two visits, but assuming three keeps you out of trouble.

C1 Visitor Visa extensions must go through this in-person process.

Online for e-VOA Holders

If you entered on an electronic Visa on Arrival, you can extend through the official portal at evisa.imigrasi.go.id, which has an “Extend My Visa” function.6Directorate General of Immigration. The Official eVisa Website for Indonesia The system accepts uploaded documents, takes payment by Visa, Mastercard, or JCB, and emails you the extended visa. Because biometrics were captured at the border on arrival, you may not need to visit an office at all.

Check the portal’s file format and size requirements before uploading. A rejected submission does not pause your visa clock, and reworking the files eats into your processing window.

Extension Fees

Fees are classified as non-tax state revenue (PNBP) and differ sharply by visa type:

Online applicants pay by card through the portal. For in-person extensions, payment runs through the SIMPONI billing system, which generates a code linking your payment to your file.6Directorate General of Immigration. What Happens If You Overstay

If your visa expires and you are still in Indonesia, you owe IDR 1,000,000 for each day you overstay, up to 60 days. A two-week overstay comes to IDR 14,000,000 (about $850 USD). The fine applies even when the delay is caused by slow processing of an extension you already filed.4GOV.UK. Indonesia – Visa Overstay and Deportation

Beyond 60 days, the response changes. Authorities detain, question, and deport you, and you pay for your own flight out. A re-entry ban may follow, and under Indonesia’s Immigration Law Amendment No. 63 of 2024 that ban can run from six months to ten years. If other violations turn up during processing, such as working on a tourist visa, criminal charges are possible.4GOV.UK. Indonesia – Visa Overstay and Deportation

Staying After You Have Used All Your Extensions

When the extensions run out and you still want to be in Indonesia, you have two realistic options.

The first is a visa run. Fly to Singapore, Malaysia, or another neighbor and return on a fresh Visa on Arrival, or apply for a new C1 from an Indonesian consulate abroad. This is common, though immigration officers do notice repeated short exits and re-entries.

The second is converting to a Limited Stay Permit (KITAS, also called ITAS). A C1 Visitor Visa can be converted without leaving the country under categories including investor, spouse, employment, and retirement. Each has its own paperwork: investor KITAS requires company registration documents, spouse KITAS requires a marriage certificate and your Indonesian spouse’s identification, and work KITAS depends on your employer’s eligibility plus a separate work permit approval.

While your KITAS is pending and your visitor visa is running out, a Bridging Visa (formally the Transition Stay Permit) covers the gap for up to 60 days. Submit the bridging application and pay the fee at least three days before your current permit expires and you will not face overstay penalties, even if the KITAS is approved after your old permit ends. The bridging visa becomes invalid the moment you leave Indonesia, so no international travel during this window.

Force Majeure Situations

Indonesian immigration law recognizes that some situations are outside your control. When a natural disaster, pandemic, or security crisis prevents you from leaving or extending through normal channels, authorities can issue a Force Majeure Stay Permit (Izin Tinggal Keadaan Terpaksa, or ITKT). It is granted automatically, with no application and no fee.7Directorate General of Immigration. Force Majeure Stay Permit Information The mechanism was used widely during COVID-19 border closures and has been activated during regional disruptions to international flights. If something like that happens during your stay, contact the nearest immigration office to confirm whether the ITKT has been triggered for your circumstances.
