Form IMM 5257 is the PDF application for a Canadian visitor visa, and you complete it on your computer, validate it to generate barcode pages, then upload it through an Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) secure account along with your photos, supporting documents, and fees. After you pay, you book a biometrics appointment to give fingerprints and a photo in person. Everything else, including the final decision and passport request, comes back through the online portal.
Who Uses This Form
Three groups apply on IMM 5257: travelers from visa-required countries visiting for tourism, family, or short business trips; travelers connecting through a Canadian airport for 48 hours or less, who use it to get a transit visa;1Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Transit Through Canada and parents or grandparents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents applying for a super visa, which allows stays of up to five years at a time.2Government of Canada. Super Visa for Parents and Grandparents – How Long You Can Stay in Canada A layover longer than 48 hours means you need a full visitor visa, not a transit visa.
If your passport is from a visa-exempt country and you are flying into Canada, IMM 5257 is not your form. You apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) instead.3Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Application for a Visitor Visa (Temporary Resident Visa – TRV)
Gather Your Documents First
Opening the form before you have your papers together is how applications stall. When you start the online application, IRCC generates a personalized document checklist based on your answers.4Government of Canada. Guide 5256 – Applying for a Visitor Visa (Temporary Resident Visa) Nearly every applicant needs these:
- A valid passport. Your passport number, issue date, and expiry date have to match exactly what you enter on the form.
- Two identical photos taken within the last six months, at least 35 mm × 45 mm, showing your full face against a plain white or light background with a neutral expression. Photos that miss these specs get rejected and hold up the file.5Government of Canada. Temporary Resident Visa Application Photograph Specifications
- Proof of funds: bank statements, pay stubs, or similar records showing you can cover the trip.
- A travel itinerary or booked flights. Transit applicants need specific itinerary evidence from a transportation company or travel agent.4Government of Canada. Guide 5256 – Applying for a Visitor Visa (Temporary Resident Visa)
- Proof of legal status in your country of residence if you are not a citizen there.4Government of Canada. Guide 5256 – Applying for a Visitor Visa (Temporary Resident Visa)
- A marriage certificate if you are married. Common-law partners also complete Form IMM 5409.6Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Application for Visitor Visa (Temporary Resident Visa) (IMM 5257)
Any document not in English or French needs a translation. If a certified translator does the work, include their certification. Most visitor applicants do not need a medical exam. You will need one if you plan to stay longer than six months and have lived in or traveled through certain designated countries for six consecutive months in the year before your trip. Super visa applicants always need a medical exam and must also show private health insurance valid for at least one year, purchased from a Canadian insurer or from an insurer outside Canada approved by the minister.8Government of Canada. A letter of invitation from someone in Canada is not required but strengthens the application. It should identify the host (name, date of birth, address, phone, job title, and proof of Canadian status), and describe your relationship, purpose of visit, planned length of stay, where you will stay, and how expenses will be covered. Super visa invitations must also include a promise of financial support.10Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Letter of Invitation for Visitors to Canada
Filling Out the Form
Download the current PDF from the IRCC website rather than using a copy you have saved from a previous application.6Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Application for Visitor Visa (Temporary Resident Visa) (IMM 5257) Open it in Adobe Acrobat Reader. A browser’s built-in PDF viewer often breaks the validation and barcode features.
The opening fields ask for basic identification. If you have applied to IRCC before, you have a Universal Client Identifier (UCI), an eight- or ten-digit number that appears on prior IRCC correspondence in the format 0000-0000 or 00-0000-0000.11Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. What Is a UCI? First-time applicants leave that field blank. Type your passport information exactly as it appears on the document, including any middle names, hyphens, and characters. Discrepancies slow processing.
The personal history section asks for your employment and addresses over the past ten years. Account for every gap. Unexplained periods raise questions. You will also enter the name and physical address of whoever you are visiting, or the hotel or institution where you will stay, and state how much money you will have available for the trip.
The background questions cover physical and mental health, arrests or convictions anywhere in the world, military service, and past immigration refusals. Answer every question honestly. Canadian immigration law requires truthful answers throughout the examination process,12Justice Laws Website. Immigration and Refugee Protection Act Section 16 – Examination and misrepresenting or withholding material facts triggers a five-year ban from Canada, counted from the date of the final determination.13Justice Laws Website. Immigration and Refugee Protection Act Section 40 – Misrepresentation A past conviction is not an automatic refusal. Hiding one almost always is.
Validating the Form
Once every field is complete, click Validate at the bottom of the form. The software checks for empty required fields and, when the form is complete, generates barcode pages at the end that encode your answers for IRCC’s scanners.14Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. How Do I Fill Out and Validate IRCC Application Forms With 2D Barcodes Missing fields are outlined in red with a note on what is needed. Any edit you make after validating invalidates the barcodes, so you have to validate again before saving. Save the file after successful validation.
Submitting Through Your IRCC Account
Register for an IRCC secure account if you do not already have one.15Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. IRCC Secure Account – Register Start a new visitor visa application inside the account, and the portal walks you through uploading the validated IMM 5257 PDF, your photos, and each supporting document from your checklist. You will provide a digital signature confirming the information is accurate.
Then pay the fees:
- Visitor visa processing fee: $100 CAD per person. The same fee applies whether IRCC issues a single-entry or multiple-entry visa; the officer decides which based on your application.16Government of Canada. Citizenship and Immigration Application Fees – Fee List
- Biometrics fee: $85 CAD per person, capped at $170 CAD for a family applying at the same time (spouses, common-law partners, and dependent children qualify for the family rate).17Government of Canada. Biometrics
Payment goes through the portal by credit or debit card. IRCC emails a receipt after the payment clears. Save it.
Biometrics
Once the biometrics fee is paid, IRCC issues a biometric instruction letter (BIL). You have 30 days from receiving it to complete your fingerprint and photo appointment at a designated collection point.18Government of Canada. Biometrics – How to Give Your Fingerprints and Photo19Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Biometrics – Where to Give Your Fingerprints and Photo Bring your BIL and your valid passport.
Biometrics stay valid for 10 years. If you apply for another Canadian visa in that window, your existing biometrics are linked to the new application automatically. One thing to know: IRCC cannot issue a visa that extends beyond the expiry of your biometrics, so if you want the maximum possible visa validity, giving biometrics again can be worth it even before yours expire.20Government of Canada. When to Give Your Biometrics – Temporary Resident Applicants
After You Submit
Processing times differ sharply by country. IRCC’s online processing tool shows current estimates: choose “Temporary residence (visiting, studying, working),” then “Visitor visa (from outside Canada),” then your country of residence.21Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Check Our Current Processing Times These are estimates, not commitments. Check your account often for status changes and any requests for further information.
If IRCC approves the application, you receive a passport request letter asking you to submit your physical passport so the visa can be affixed. Do not send your passport before this letter arrives. Passport submission happens at a Visa Application Centre by appointment. Bring your original passport, the passport request letter, and a completed VFS Global consent form.22VFS Global. Passport Submission A family member with their own passport request letter can submit on your behalf. Once the visa is placed in your passport and returned, you can travel.
Making a Refusal Less Likely
The most common reason applications are refused is that the officer was not satisfied the applicant would leave Canada at the end of the authorized stay.23Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. My Application for a Visitor Visa Was Refused – Should I Apply Again? Officers weigh finances, employment, family responsibilities, property, and community ties to gauge whether you have reason to return home. Build that case into your file rather than leaving the officer to piece it together.
Useful evidence includes an employment letter confirming your role and approved leave, a property deed or lease, current student enrollment records, and documentation of close family who depend on you at home. Bank statements showing steady income over time carry more weight than a single recent large deposit, which can look staged. Prior international travel where you returned on time also helps: it shows a pattern of compliance.
If Your Application Is Refused
A refusal does not block you from applying again, but reapplying with the same facts almost always produces the same result. Read the refusal letter closely; it names the specific grounds. Wait to reapply until something material has changed, such as a new job, stronger finances, an approved criminal rehabilitation application, or a different purpose of visit. Hiring an immigration consultant or representative will not change a prior officer’s decision.23Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. My Application for a Visitor Visa Was Refused – Should I Apply Again? If you believe the process itself was unfair, you can seek judicial review at the Federal Court of Canada; the leave application deadline is 60 days from the decision for matters arising outside Canada and 15 days for matters arising inside Canada, and extensions are rare.
