How to Fill Out and Submit the Kroger Job Application Form

Every Kroger job application goes through the company’s online careers portal at krogerfamilycareers.com, which handles hiring for Kroger-owned banners including Ralphs, Fred Meyer, Harris Teeter, Smith’s, and the rest of the chain’s grocery brands. Plan on 30 to 45 minutes for the main form, plus another 20 to 30 minutes for a personality and situational judgment assessment that launches immediately after you submit. Having your work history and weekly availability in front of you keeps the session from stalling.

What to Have Ready Before You Start

Gather these before you log in:

  • Full legal name, address, phone number, email, and Social Security number.
  • Names, addresses, and approximate dates for your previous employers, with a short description of what you did at each. If you’ve never held a job, the form accommodates that.
  • School names and graduation dates, or your highest level completed. Enter them exactly as they appear on your records.
  • Your real weekly availability. The form asks you to mark specific hours for each day of the week, covering everything from early-morning stocking shifts through overnights. Flexibility here is one of the biggest factors in whether a store calls you back.
  • A resume if you have one. Uploading it is optional, but it auto-fills some fields.

Use a personal email address rather than a shared household account. Kroger ties your login and status updates to that email, and a shared inbox causes problems later when the system sends verification messages.

Filling Out the Online Form

Start at krogerfamilycareers.com and search for openings by location and job type, or browse by department — store operations, pharmacy, bakery and deli, meat and seafood, front-end cashier, and courtesy clerk all appear as filterable categories.1The Kroger Co. Search Jobs When you click “Apply” on a specific role, the portal prompts you to create a candidate profile if you don’t already have one.

The form moves through several screens. The first collects contact and personal information. The second is your employment history: list each job with dates, employer name, and a brief description. Plain, specific language carries more weight than a job title alone. “Operated a cash register and resolved customer complaints” tells a hiring manager something; “cashier” does not. The next screen covers education, followed by an availability grid where you select workable hours for each day.

You’ll also pick a preferred store and department. Indicating that you’re open to multiple departments is fine, but naming at least one specific area signals genuine interest to whoever reviews your file. Before you move on, read the summary screen carefully for typos and missing fields.

The Assessment That Follows

Right after you submit the main form, Kroger routes you into a required set of assessments. Skipping them leaves your application incomplete. There’s a personality questionnaire of roughly 85 questions and a situational judgment test built around workplace scenarios: a difficult customer, a disagreement with a coworker, competing tasks with the clock running. No trick answers, but the personality section cross-references your responses for consistency, so answer honestly rather than trying to guess the “right” trait.

If your session drops out, log back in through the Manage Your Profile portal using the email or phone number you registered with and pick up where you left off.2The Kroger Co. Manage Your Profile

Who Can Apply

The general minimum hiring age at Kroger is 16 for most entry-level roles such as cashier or stock clerk. In some states, 14- and 15-year-olds can work as courtesy clerks — the baggers and cart retrievers — if they get a work permit from their school or local labor office. Federal child labor rules allow workers in that age range to handle cashiering, shelf stocking, and bagging, but bar them from operating power-driven equipment like meat slicers, bakery mixers, or trash compactors.3U.S. Department of Labor. Fact Sheet 38 – Child Labor Rules for Employing Youth in Grocery Stores Under the Fair Labor Standards Act Any role involving that equipment requires applicants to be at least 18.

Everyone hired in the United States must also complete Form I-9. You fill out Section 1 no later than your first day of work, and Kroger completes Section 2 within three business days, examining documents such as a U.S. passport, permanent resident card, or a driver’s license paired with a Social Security card.4U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Completing Section 2, Employer Review and Attestation You don’t need to bring those documents to the interview; they come into play only after you accept an offer.

Tracking Your Application

A confirmation screen appears after you finish the assessments, and an automated email goes to the address on file. If it doesn’t show up within a few minutes, check your spam folder. The message comes from an automated sender that filters often catch.

To see where things stand, log back into Manage Your Profile with the email or phone number you used to register.2The Kroger Co. Manage Your Profile The dashboard shows whether your application is still under review, has moved forward, or whether the position has been filled. Store-level hiring managers typically review new submissions within about three to seven days. Busy seasons and high-volume stores can stretch that.

The Interview

Most Kroger interviews are a single in-person conversation with the department manager at the store you applied to. If it goes well, that manager may walk you over to meet the store manager and extend an offer on the spot. No panels, no multiple rounds.

Questions tend to focus on three things: your availability, any prior customer-facing or retail experience, and how you’d handle common on-the-floor situations. Expect prompts like “tell me about a time you dealt with a difficult customer” or “how would you handle a coworker not pulling their weight.” A specific, concrete example beats a general answer every time. Managers will also confirm you have reliable transportation, because shift start and end times don’t always match local transit schedules.

Dress a step above what you’d wear to shop there: clean, neat, nothing with holes or large graphics. Being five minutes early matters more than being in a blazer. Bring a printed copy of your resume even though you uploaded one. It gives you something to reference and shows you prepared.

If You Get an Offer

Before Kroger finalizes a conditional offer, the company runs a background check. Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, you must receive a written disclosure in a standalone document stating that a background report will be pulled, and you have to authorize it in writing before the check proceeds.5Office of the Law Revision Counsel. United States Code Title 15 Section 1681b You’ll sign that consent during the hiring paperwork stage. A past conviction doesn’t automatically disqualify you, but being dishonest about your record when asked is far more likely to end the process than the record itself.

Orientation covers the rest: Form I-9, tax withholding, direct deposit, and any drug screening the role requires. Screening policies vary. Safety-sensitive positions such as equipment operation and pharmacy work more often require a pre-employment test; standard clerk roles may not, depending on state and local rules.

Roughly two-thirds of Kroger stores operate under a United Food and Commercial Workers union contract. If yours does, you may be asked to join the union or pay an agency fee after a probationary period, and your pay scale, scheduled raises, and health benefits will follow the terms of the local contract. Stores without a union contract set their own pay and benefit terms. Ask your store’s HR representative during orientation for the plan documents that apply to your location, because the generic overview on the careers site won’t capture the local details that actually affect your paycheck.
