Decide Which Withdrawal You Are Submitting

The form and the fallout depend on what you are actually doing. A course withdrawal drops you from one or more specific classes while you stay enrolled in others. A total withdrawal ends your enrollment for the rest of the term. Any time you stop being actively enrolled in a sub-term, Liberty treats it as a total withdrawal.4Liberty University. Withdrawals

Total withdrawals carry a $50 fee for ceasing enrollment in the semester. If you are already registered for a later sub-term or semester and want to keep those courses on your schedule, you must submit a Letter of Intent at the same time as the withdrawal, either through the Intent to Withdraw Form or the prompt your Academic Advisor provides. Without that letter, your future registrations are dropped automatically.4Liberty University. Withdrawals

How Online Students Submit the Form

Online students cannot withdraw themselves through a self-service form. You must contact the Liberty University Online Academic Advising Department, either by emailing from your Liberty webmail account or by calling.5Liberty University. Academic Information and Policies – Online Program The dedicated withdrawal email is LUWITHDRAWAL@liberty.edu and the phone line is (800) 424-9595.1Liberty University. Withdrawal Information

Have your Liberty University ID (LUID) and the Course Registration Numbers (CRNs) ready before you reach out. For an online course withdrawal, you can withdraw from any course up until the final day of class for that sub-term and receive a “W” grade.

How Residential Students Submit the Form

Residential course withdrawals go through the Registrar’s Office. For undergraduate residential courses, the deadline to withdraw with a “W” falls around the eleventh week of the semester. For the 2025–2026 academic year, the last day to withdraw with a “W” is December 5, 2025 for fall and May 5, 2026 for spring.6Liberty University. Academic Activity Changes a Drop Into a Withdrawal

One detail catches students off guard. Once you have participated in a course through any form of academic activity, you can no longer drop it for a full refund; the transaction becomes a withdrawal and the refund schedule below applies. Liberty defines academic activity as:4Liberty University. Withdrawals

  • Submitting the Course Requirements Checklist
  • Posting to a graded Discussion Board
  • Submitting any assignment that can receive a grade
  • Emailing or contacting the faculty member with a question about the academic subject of the course

Logging into Canvas or viewing course materials does not count. A single email to your professor about course content does.

What You Get Back: Tuition Refund Schedule

The refund is a credit to your student account, applied against what you owe rather than sent as a check. How much you get back depends on when you withdraw and how long the course runs.7Liberty University. Expenses and Financial Policy – Online Program

Dropping from full-time to part-time can also reduce or cancel your financial aid award, which can raise your out-of-pocket cost even when you receive a partial tuition credit.5Liberty University. Academic Information and Policies – Online Program

Federal Aid Has a Separate Calculation

Liberty’s tuition refund schedule and the federal Return of Title IV Funds (R2T4) calculation are two different things, and confusing them is a common source of surprise bills. R2T4 determines how much federal financial aid you actually earned. A pro-rata schedule applies through the 60% point of the enrollment period: attend 30% of the term and you earned 30% of your scheduled Title IV aid, with the remaining 70% returned to the federal programs. Past the 60% mark, you have earned 100% and nothing goes back.8Federal Student Aid. FSA Handbook Volume 5 – Withdrawals and the Return of Title IV Funds

Because the two calculations are independent, you can receive a 50% tuition credit from Liberty and still owe a return of federal aid that exceeds that credit. When aid is returned to the government on your behalf, that payment is pulled off your student account, which can leave a balance you owe out of pocket. If you owe a repayment to a federal aid program and do not make arrangements, you become ineligible for any federal student financial assistance at any institution until the debt is resolved.

What Shows Up on Your Transcript

A withdrawn course posts as a “W.” That grade is permanent and cannot be altered or removed, but it does not factor into your GPA. It can, however, affect future financial aid awards.9Liberty University. Withdrawal Policies and Information

A “W” is very different from an “FN” (Failure for Non-Completion), which Liberty assigns when a student stops participating without formally withdrawing. An “FN” hits your GPA the way an “F” would. For online K-12 courses through Liberty University Online Academy, an “FN” is assigned after 30 consecutive days of inactivity; for dual enrollment, the threshold is 21 days. Inactivity means failing to submit assignments in Canvas; logging in alone does not count.10Liberty University Online Academy. Academic Policies Submitting the withdrawal form is almost always better than disappearing from your courses.

Situations With Extra Steps

Three groups of students should not submit the form without a preliminary conversation.

Residential students with housing or a dining plan. Housing fees may be prorated based on the date you remove your belongings from the residence hall, not the date you submit the withdrawal. Withdrawing in the spring without clearing items left from the previous semester can trigger a prorated housing charge starting from the removal date. Dining charges may also be prorated, but any Dining Dollars or Flames Cash on the plan are not refunded, and commuter meal plans are non-refundable entirely.11Liberty University. Expenses and Financial Policy – Resident Program

International students on an F-1 or other student visa. Withdrawing has immigration consequences. Meet with your International Student Advocate at Liberty’s International Student Center (MyStatus@liberty.edu) before you submit anything. Your SEVIS record stays at Liberty until it is formally transferred or terminated, and any work authorization, including on-campus employment, CPT, and OPT, ends the date the record is transferred. If you are moving to another U.S. school, submit the Transfer Out Form along with your new acceptance letter so your adviser can transfer the SEVIS record.12Liberty University. Transfer SEVIS Record to Another U.S. School A terminated SEVIS record puts you out of status, which carries penalties including a potential three- to ten-year bar on re-entry.

Students requesting a medical withdrawal. Documentation requirements vary by program. Liberty’s College of Osteopathic Medicine, for example, requires a letter on clinic or department letterhead from a licensed physician (M.D. or D.O.) or another qualified professional identifying the condition and the anticipated time needed away, and a follow-up letter certifying fitness to return.13Liberty University. Leave of Absence If you are undergraduate or in another graduate program, ask the Registrar or your Academic Advisor exactly what your program requires before you submit.

Confirming the Withdrawal Went Through

After the request is processed, check your student dashboard and unofficial transcript. The affected courses should show a “W,” and your account should not carry unexpected charges. Save the confirmation email that arrives in your Liberty webmail; it is your receipt if a billing question comes up later. Within a week or two, verify that the tuition credit matches the refund schedule for the week you withdrew. R2T4 adjustments can take longer, so keep watching the account through the end of the semester. If something looks off, call the Registrar at (434) 592-5100 or email registrar@liberty.edu for residential issues, or LUWITHDRAWAL@liberty.edu for online.2Liberty University.
