How to Fill Out and Submit the NOVA Course Prerequisite Waiver Form

The NOVA course prerequisite waiver form, officially Form 125-041, is an online request that lets you skip a required prerequisite when you can show you already have the knowledge from prior coursework, test scores, or another qualifying credential. You submit it through NOVA’s eforms dashboard at dashboard.nvcc.edu, and the college responds within three business days.1Northern Virginia Community College. Visiting and Transient Students File a separate form for each course you want a prerequisite waived for.

What Documentation NOVA Accepts

Your evidence has to show that you satisfy the prerequisite as described in the NOVA Course Content Summary for the specific course you want to register for.2Northern Virginia Community College. Visiting, Incoming and Returning Students Unofficial copies are fine at this stage. NOVA accepts:

  • U.S. college or university transcripts from any accredited institution, showing your full name, the school’s name, and your course history.
  • International evaluation transcripts, but only from World Education Services (WES) or the International Education Research Foundation (IERF). Raw foreign transcripts are not accepted.
  • Standardized test scores from ACT, SAT, SAT II, AP, CLEP, DSST, Cambridge, IB, ABLE, ACE, DuoLingo, GED, IELTS, or TOEFL iBT.
  • U.S. high school transcripts, but only for upper-level math courses: MTH 162, MTH 245, MTH 261, and MTH 263.1Northern Virginia Community College. Visiting and Transient Students

You’ll also need your seven-digit VCCS student ID (sometimes called your EMPLID or SIS number), which appears under “View my information” in myNOVA.3Northern Virginia Community College. Get a NOVACard

How to Fill Out the Form

Form 125-041 is an eform, not a PDF. You open it from NOVA’s student forms library and complete everything inside the dashboard.4Northern Virginia Community College. College Forms for Students

  • Upload your documents first. Attach the transcripts, score reports, or evaluation reports before filling in the rest, so your evidence is tied to the request.
  • Choose the course. The form uses drop-downs for the prefix and catalog number (ENG 112, MTH 263, and so on). Pick the course you want to enroll in, not the prerequisite you’ve already satisfied.
  • Write a direct comment. Name the course you took, the score you earned, or the credential you hold, and connect it to the specific prerequisite being waived. A vague comment like “I took a similar class” is the most common reason requests stall, because the reviewer has to come back and ask.
  • Submit electronically. There’s no department to email and no office to visit.

If you need waivers for two courses, you file two forms.1Northern Virginia Community College. Visiting and Transient Students

If Your Coursework Is From Outside the U.S.

You cannot upload a foreign transcript directly. NOVA requires a course-by-course evaluation from an approved credential evaluation agency before international coursework can be used for any academic purpose.5Northern Virginia Community College. Transfer Credit Evaluation For the waiver form specifically, NOVA accepts evaluations from WES and IERF.1Northern Virginia Community College. Visiting and Transient Students You send your original transcripts to one of those organizations, pay for the course-by-course evaluation, and upload the resulting report with your form.

Credential evaluations often take several weeks, so start that process well before you plan to register.

AP and Other Test Scores

A qualifying test score can satisfy a prerequisite outright, and in many cases earns NOVA credit for the prerequisite course itself. The math equivalencies, which drive most waiver requests, work like this:

  • AP Pre-Calculus, score of 3 or higher: credit for MTH 162 (3 credits).
  • AP Calculus AB, score of 3 or higher: credit for MTH 263 (4 credits).
  • AP Calculus BC, score of 3 or higher: credit for both MTH 263 and MTH 264 (8 credits total).
  • AP Statistics, score of 3 or higher: credit for MTH 245 (3 credits).6Northern Virginia Community College. CPL Section 4 – Credit by Advanced Placement (AP) Exam

Even when AP credit covers the prerequisite course, you may still need the waiver to clear the registration block before the credit is posted to your record. Upload your unofficial score report as the supporting document. The same approach works for CLEP, DSST, Cambridge, and IB exams: check the Course Content Summary to see which prerequisite the score covers, and spell that connection out in the comment field.

After You Submit

The relevant academic department reviews your file and decides whether your evidence matches the prerequisites in the Course Content Summary. The stated turnaround is three business days.7Northern Virginia Community College. Frequently Asked Questions If it’s approved, the department applies a registration override, and you can enroll through the Student Information System. If the reviewer needs more, you’ll be contacted to upload additional documents or clarify your comment.

Because you can’t register for a blocked course until the override posts, submit the form at least a week before you plan to register. That gives you a buffer in case the reviewer asks for more. For upper-level math and science sections that fill fast, waiting until the last minute can mean the seat is gone by the time your approval comes through.

If your waiver is denied, it usually means the documentation didn’t clearly show you completed the specific prerequisite content, or the outside course covered similar but not identical material. You can resubmit with stronger evidence: a more detailed transcript, a syllabus from the earlier course showing overlapping learning objectives, or an additional test score. You can also contact the academic division directly and ask what would satisfy the requirement.
