How to Fill Out and Submit the TXU Energy Proof of Move Form

To avoid an early termination fee when you move, submit your TXU Energy proof of move by faxing documents to 866-892-3844 or emailing resrequest@txu.com (residential customers), along with your account number, move-out date, and forwarding address. Acceptable proof includes a signed lease, home closing documents, a recent utility bill in your name at the new address, or a notarized landlord affidavit. Texas rules prohibit TXU from charging a cancellation fee when you relocate, as long as you provide a forwarding address and reasonable evidence you no longer live at the service address.1Public Utility Commission of Texas. 16 Texas Administrative Code 25.475 – General Retail Electric Provider Requirements and Information Disclosures to Residential and Small Commercial Customers

What Documents TXU Accepts

TXU Energy generally accepts the same types of residency proof it uses for other verification purposes. Any one of the following, showing your new address and your name, should satisfy the request:2TXU Energy. New Occupant Statement – Switch Hold

  • A signed lease agreement. Send at least the first and last pages, with signatures from both tenant and landlord and the new address clearly shown.
  • Closing documents from a home purchase, showing the new service address and signatures from buyer and seller.
  • A gas, electric, water, cable, or internet bill in your name at a different address, dated within the last two months. Cell phone bills don’t qualify.3TXU Energy. New Occupant Statement
  • A notarized affidavit from a landlord confirming your tenancy at the new address.

The name on your documentation has to match the name on your TXU Energy account exactly. Mismatched names are one of the most common reasons a submission gets flagged and delayed.

How to Submit Your Proof

Residential customers send proof by fax to 866-892-3844 or by email to resrequest@txu.com. Business customers use fax 866-748-4139 or email smbrequest@txu.com.2TXU Energy. New Occupant Statement – Switch Hold

Include three things with your submission:

If you’re emailing, send clear scans or photos. Blurry images slow processing. TXU’s standard review window is up to two business days, after which they’ll contact you with a decision.2TXU Energy. Schedule the Cancellation at the Same Time

Call TXU Energy at 866-278-4898 to set your service stop date. TXU coordinates with your local Transmission and Distribution Utility for a final meter read and issues a final bill through your last day of service. Same-day cancellations are possible if you call before 5 p.m., except Sundays and holidays.4TXU Energy. Contact Us – Quickly Reach a Live Agent The representative will tell you whether they need proof of move for your account; if so, send it right after the call using the fax or email above.

If you forgot to schedule a stop date before moving out, call the same number and request a retroactive stop date. Waiting only piles up usage charges at the old address.5TXU Energy. Proof of Move

If your new address is still inside TXU’s service area, you may not need to cancel at all. You can transfer your existing plan through the MyAccount portal, and TXU allows your start date at the new home and end date at the old one to overlap by up to 90 days. Transferring the plan sidesteps the termination fee question entirely because you’re continuing the same contract at a different location.5TXU Energy. Proof of Move

Why the Fee Can’t Stand if You Comply

Public Utility Commission of Texas Substantive Rule 25.475 limits a retail electric contract to service at the address named in it. If you move, you have no obligation to continue the contract at another location, and no early termination fee may be assessed as a result of your relocation, provided you give the provider a forwarding address and, if requested, reasonable evidence that you no longer occupy the original address.1Public Utility Commission of Texas. 16 Texas Administrative Code 25.475 – General Retail Electric Provider Requirements and Information Disclosures to Residential and Small Commercial Customers

The PUCT has said this protection applies whether you move across town or out of state. The commission also noted that letting a provider ask for evidence is meant to keep customers from falsely claiming a move to escape a contract, and the rule leaves the specific type of proof to the provider’s discretion under a “reasonable” standard.6Public Utility Commission of Texas. Project No. 35768 – Rulemaking Relating to Customer Protection Rules for Retail Electric Service That’s why one document from the list above, combined with your forwarding address, is generally enough.

Final Bill and Deposit

TXU issues the final bill based on the last meter reading. If you paid a security deposit, that deposit plus accrued interest is credited to the final bill, and any remaining balance is refunded to you.7TXU Energy. Flexible Electricity Deposit Options

If TXU Charges the Fee Anyway

Call TXU first and give them the chance to correct it. The PUCT requires that step before it will look at a complaint.8Public Utility Commission of Texas. File a Complaint

If TXU won’t reverse the charge, file an informal complaint with the PUCT’s Consumer Protection Division. You can file online through the commission’s electricity complaint form, call 1-888-782-8477, or mail the complaint to the Public Utility Commission of Texas, P.O. Box 13326, Austin, TX 78711-3326. Once the complaint is filed, TXU has 15 days to investigate and respond to the commission.8Public Utility Commission of Texas. File a Complaint

Keep copies of everything you sent TXU: the proof-of-move documents themselves, the fax confirmation or sent email, your forwarding address on record, and any responses. The commission will want to see what evidence you already provided and when.
