How to Fill Out and Submit the UK Visa Application Form

To fill out the UK visa application form, you complete a guided questionnaire on GOV.UK, upload or bring supporting documents, pay the visa fee and (for stays over six months) the Immigration Health Surcharge, then attend a biometric appointment to finish the process. The form saves as you go, but once you submit it locks, so accuracy before that final click is the whole game.

One thing to check first: if you’re a U.S. citizen coming for tourism, a family visit, business meetings, a conference, or short-term study of six months or less, you don’t fill in a visa form at all. You apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation, which has been mandatory for U.S. citizens since February 25, 2026.1U.S. Embassy & Consulate in Spain and Andorra. Routine Message: Reminder – UK Entry Requirements as of February 25, 2026 The rest of this guide is for people who do need the full visa: work, study, settlement, family, or longer stays.

Pick the Right Route Before You Open the Form

GOV.UK uses filtering questions about your nationality, where you live, and why you’re traveling to route you to the correct application. Getting this wrong at the start means refusal later, even if you’d have qualified under the right route. The common ones are the Standard Visitor visa for trips under six months,2GOV.UK. Apply for a Standard Visitor Visa the Skilled Worker visa (which requires a Certificate of Sponsorship from a licensed UK employer),3GOV.UK. Skilled Worker Visa the Student visa (which requires a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies from an approved school),4GOV.UK. Student Visa and family visas for joining a partner, parent, or child who is British or settled.

Your application generates a unique reference number. Spouses and children file their own separate applications linked to yours by that reference or a family linking code the system produces during submission.5GOV.UK. Skilled Worker Visa: Your Partner and Children Dependents can’t be added to the main form. Each person pays their own fee and their own health surcharge.

Gather Every Document Before You Start Typing

The form asks for specific numbers, dates, and details straight off your documents. If what you type doesn’t line up with what you upload, expect delays or a request for further information. Have everything laid out before you log in.

Passport

You need a valid passport with at least one blank page, in good condition, with all text clearly readable. The form will ask for your passport number, place of issue, and expiration date. You’ll later provide color copies of every page, blank ones included, in page order.

Travel History

The application asks about your previous international travel, and the dates you type should match your passport stamps. If you’ve traveled widely, keep your current and any older passports in front of you when you reach this section.6GOV.UK. Visiting the UK: Guide to Supporting Documents

Financial Evidence

What counts as enough depends on your route. Student applicants must show the required funds were held for at least 28 consecutive days, with the end of that 28-day window falling within 31 days of the application date.7GOV.UK. Student Visa: Money A bank letter can substitute for statements if it confirms the same 28-day continuous holding and is dated within 31 days of applying.8GOV.UK. Financial Evidence for Student and Child Student Visa Applicants For visitor visas, the Home Office doesn’t set a specific holding period but wants evidence you can support yourself: bank statements, pay slips, or an employer letter with your salary. If someone else is paying for your trip, you’ll need a letter from them confirming the arrangement plus their own financial records.

Sponsorship Documents

Skilled Worker applicants need a Certificate of Sponsorship, an electronic record assigned by a licensed UK employer with a unique reference number you type into the form.9GOV.UK. UK Visa Sponsorship for Employers – Certificates of Sponsorship Student applicants need the equivalent from their school, called a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies, again an electronic record with a reference number, plus course and tuition details.4GOV.UK. Student Visa You can’t submit either application without that number.

Tuberculosis Certificate

If you’re applying for six months or more and have lived in a listed country for at least six months within the last six months, you need a TB test certificate from a Home Office-approved clinic. It’s valid for six months from the X-ray date, and the Home Office won’t accept results from clinics that aren’t on its list.10GOV.UK. Tuberculosis Tests for Visa Applicants

Translations

Any document not in English or Welsh needs a full translation the Home Office can verify. Each translation must carry the translator’s full name, signature, contact details, the date, and a statement that it’s an accurate translation of the original.6GOV.UK. Working Through the Online Form

The application lives on GOV.UK and runs as a guided questionnaire. You create an account, receive a sign-in link by email, and can save and return whenever you need to. Start with your personal details, and spell your name exactly as it appears in the machine-readable zone at the bottom of your passport’s photo page. Small mismatches between what you type and what your passport shows cause problems at the border.

You’ll then work through family details (parents’ names, dates of birth, nationalities), employment (employer’s address, gross annual income as it appears on your tax documents), and your UK plans (intended address, length of stay, purpose of the visit). Each section has to be marked complete before you’re allowed to move on to the final review.

The Honesty Questions

One section asks yes-or-no questions about criminal convictions, civil penalties, and previous immigration refusals. This is where applications get sunk. If the Home Office finds you used deception or gave false information, even about something that wouldn’t have changed the outcome, the application is refused, and future applications are automatically refused for ten years from the date of the refusal.11GOV.UK. Part Suitability: Deception, False Representations, False Documents and Non-Disclosure of Relevant Facts The Home Office distinguishes deliberate deception from honest mistakes, but proving an error was innocent after the fact is hard. Disclose when in doubt.

Part 9 of the Immigration Rules also covers overstaying, illegal working, failing to comply with Home Office requests, and conduct not conducive to the public good. Some are mandatory refusal grounds; others allow the caseworker to weigh your circumstances.

Paying and Submitting

You can’t submit until you’ve paid the visa fee and, for stays over six months, the Immigration Health Surcharge. The visa fee varies by route and duration and is listed in pounds; GOV.UK provides a calculator that shows the amount in your local currency.12GOV.UK. Home Office Immigration and Nationality Fees, 8 April 2026

The health surcharge gives you access to the NHS for the length of your visa, and you pay the full amount upfront for the whole visa period. Most applicants pay £1,035 per year; students, their dependents, Youth Mobility Scheme participants, and applicants under 18 pay £776 per year.13GOV.UK. Pay for UK Healthcare as Part of Your Immigration Application: How Much Pay Visitor visas of six months or less don’t require the surcharge.

After both payments go through, you read and electronically sign a declaration confirming everything you entered is truthful. Clicking submit locks the form. You cannot edit it after that.

Biometrics and Uploading Documents

Once submitted, you book an appointment at a Visa Application Centre run by VFS Global, TLScontact, or another provider depending on your country, to give fingerprints and a photograph.14VFS Global. Appointment Booking Applications made from inside the UK to extend or switch a visa go through a UKVCAS service point instead.15GOV.UK. UK Visa and Citizenship Application Services

Most applicants upload scanned supporting documents to a secure portal before the appointment, which saves time on the day. Scanning services at the center are available for an extra fee if you’d rather not do it yourself. Bring your passport. If you’re applying from outside the UK, the center may keep it until a decision is made.

Fixing Mistakes and Withdrawing

Because the form locks at submission, review is your only safeguard. If an error still slips through and later shows up on your eVisa, report it through the online service on GOV.UK. If the error is on a passport vignette before you’ve traveled, contact UK Visas and Immigration directly.16GOV.UK. Getting a Decision on Your Application

To pull out entirely, the visa fee is refundable as long as you haven’t given fingerprints and a photo. If you verified identity with the smartphone app, the fee is refundable if you withdraw before the document upload deadline or before selecting “confirm and upload.”17GOV.UK. Cancel Your Visa, Immigration or Citizenship Application: Getting a Refund The health surcharge is refunded in full if your application is refused, withdrawn, or paid twice by mistake, and refunds typically process within six weeks.18GOV.UK. What to Expect After You Submit

Standard processing from outside the UK is three weeks for Visitor, Student, Skilled Worker, and Health and Care Worker applications. Family visas (partner, parent, child) take up to 12 weeks.19UK Visas and Immigration. Visa Processing Times: Applications Outside the UK Applications from inside the UK generally take 8 weeks for most work and study categories, with some family routes running up to 12 months.20UK Visas and Immigration. Visa Processing Times: Applications Inside the UK

Two paid upgrades speed things up. Priority service costs £500 and usually returns a decision within 5 working days, though family visa applications from outside the UK still take up to 30 working days even with priority. Super priority service costs £1,000 and usually returns a decision by the end of the next working day after your appointment, or two working days if the appointment falls on a weekend or bank holiday.21GOV.UK. Get a Faster Decision on Your Visa or Settlement Application If you’re applying as a family and want everyone’s decision at once, each person pays for priority separately. Decisions may still take longer if the Home Office needs to verify information with another agency.

Decisions come by email. For applications from outside the UK, your passport is returned with an entry clearance vignette that lets you travel to the UK within a set window. Once inside the UK, your status is recorded digitally as an eVisa.

If Your Visa Is Refused

The refusal letter sets out the reasons and the remedy available to you, and the remedy depends on the route.

Most points-based routes (Skilled Worker, Student, Graduate, Global Talent, and others) are eligible for administrative review, which is a check by a different caseworker for errors in the original decision. The fee is £80 and is refunded if the review finds a caseworking error and the decision is withdrawn. The refusal letter tells you whether administrative review is available.22House of Commons Library. Immigration Appeal Rights It’s not available for visitor visas, human rights claims, or asylum applications.

A right of appeal to the First-tier Tribunal (Immigration and Asylum) exists mainly for refusals involving human rights claims, such as an argument that refusing the visa would separate you from a child or partner in the UK. The Home Office treats family route applications as human rights claims, so those refusals normally carry appeal rights. In some cases the Home Office can certify the claim and require you to leave the UK before the appeal is heard.

For refusals with no administrative review or appeal, most commonly visitor visa refusals, the main route forward is a fresh application that addresses each reason set out in the refusal letter.
