How to Fill Out and Submit Your RBT Renewal Form (BACB)

To renew your RBT certification, you complete the BACB’s Recertification Competency Assessment within the 45 days before your expiration date, then log into your BACB account, open the recertification application, enter the assessment completion date and your responsible supervisor’s BACB account number, complete the attestation screens, and pay the renewal fee. The RBT renewal form lives inside your BACB account, not as a standalone PDF — the competency assessment is the paper document you bring to it.

When to Renew and What Happens If You’re Late

Your renewal window is the 45 days leading up to the expiration date shown in your BACB account. The Recertification Competency Assessment must be completed inside that window, and your application should go in during it as well.1Behavior Analyst Certification Board. If your certification lapses before you submit, the BACB gives you a 30-day reinstatement period. During those 30 days your status is expired: you cannot practice, bill for services, or represent yourself as an RBT, and the reinstatement fee is higher than the standard renewal fee. Let the 30 days pass without submitting and your certification expires permanently; getting it back means starting over under whatever requirements are in effect at that time.2Behavior Analyst Certification Board. When RBT Certification Doesn’t Go as Planned

Set your own reminder well before the 45-day mark. Scheduling an assessor, completing the 20 tasks (sometimes across multiple sessions), and getting the signed form in hand takes time.

What Has to Be in Place Before You File

A Supervisor of Record

You must have a supervisor on file with the BACB at all times during your certification year, not just at renewal. That supervisor is a BCBA or BCaBA who has completed the 8-hour supervision training and is responsible for monthly oversight.3Behavior Analyst Certification Board. Registered Behavior Technician Handbook

Minimum supervision is 5% of the hours you deliver behavior-analytic services each calendar month, including at least two face-to-face, real-time contacts per month, with your supervisor observing you providing services during at least one of them. In-person observation is preferred; video conferencing is acceptable.4Behavior Analyst Certification Board. Registered Behavior Technician Handbook

Self-Reporting Current

Before you attest on the renewal application, make sure anything you were required to self-report during the year actually got reported. Qualifying events include believing you’ve violated the RBT Ethics Code, being named in a civil or criminal investigation, receiving a court order or charges, and physical or mental health conditions or substance use disorders that could pose a risk to others. Investigations and legal actions must be reported to the BACB’s Ethics Department within 30 days of becoming aware of them.5Behavior Analyst Certification Board. Self-Reporting Attesting while a required report is outstanding creates ethics problems that outlast the renewal cycle.

Completing the Recertification Competency Assessment

The competency assessment is the one document the BACB requires you to produce for renewal, and it has to be completed inside your 45-day window to count.1Behavior Analyst Certification Board. Who Can Sign It

The responsible assessor must be a BACB certificant (BCBA or BCaBA) who has completed the 8-hour supervision training. That person oversees the whole assessment, signs the form, and retains documentation for a minimum of seven years. If someone who doesn’t meet those qualifications administers it, your renewal application will be denied.1Behavior Analyst Certification Board. RBT Recertification Competency Assessment Packet

How the Assessment Runs

The assessment covers 20 tasks spanning data collection, skill acquisition, behavior reduction, documentation, and professionalism. It can be completed across multiple sessions. It doesn’t have to be in person: the BACB permits live observation over the internet, and recorded videos created specifically for the assessment are also acceptable.1Behavior Analyst Certification Board. Three tasks in the skill acquisition and behavior reduction section must be demonstrated with an actual client. If you don’t pass a task, the assessor can give corrective feedback and reassess you on a different day, but corrective feedback cannot be given during the final attempt of any task. All 20 items have to be completed before the form is submitted with your application.

Filling Out and Submitting the Renewal Application

Once the competency assessment is signed, log into your BACB account and open the recertification application. The fields you’ll fill in are straightforward, but a mistake on either of these two will delay or kill your renewal:

  • The date the competency assessment was finalized
  • Your responsible supervisor’s BACB account number

After the data entry, the application moves you through attestation screens where you confirm compliance with ongoing requirements, including supervision and ethical standards. Then it sends you to payment. The standard renewal fee applies if you’re inside the 45-day window; the higher reinstatement fee applies if you’re submitting during the 30-day post-expiration period. Payment must be completed at submission for the application to process.

After You Submit

The BACB sends an automated confirmation email once payment clears. Processing times vary, and the BACB posts the date of applications currently being reviewed on its application processing updates page.6Behavior Analyst Certification Board. Application Processing Updates Keep your payment receipt until the new expiration date appears in your account.

You can confirm your status at any time through the BACB Certificant Registry, which updates daily.7Behavior Analyst Certification Board. Verify BACB Certification When the new expiration date shows there, your renewal is complete.

If You Can’t Renew Right Now

If you need to step away from practice rather than renew, you can apply for voluntary inactive status, but only while you are still inside your recertification cycle — not during the 30-day reinstatement period after expiration.8Behavior Analyst Certification Board. RBT Application for Voluntary Inactive Status

You submit the voluntary inactive status application through the BACB’s Contact Us form before your certification expires. The BACB then emails instructions for a $25 nonrefundable processing fee, and you have two weeks from that email to pay. Allow another two weeks for processing after payment. While inactive, you cannot practice, bill, or identify yourself as an RBT, and the registry will show you as “inactive.” You are not required to complete competency assessments or pay renewal fees during this period. Inactive status lasts up to two years; you must request reinstatement within that window, or your certification expires permanently and you would need to reapply from scratch.8Behavior Analyst Certification Board.
