How to Fill Out the ISBN Registration Form for Your Book

To fill out the ISBN registration form, sign in to your Bowker account at myidentifiers.com, open the “Manage ISBNs” section, click an unassigned ISBN, and work through the assignment form field by field: title and subtitle, contributors, imprint, format, BISAC subject code, publication date, and retail price.1Bowker. Title Set Up and Registration The whole thing takes about ten minutes once your metadata is ready, but several fields lock the moment you submit, so the preparation matters more than the clicking.

What to Have Ready Before You Open the Form

Gather everything below in a single document before you log in. The form does not save partial entries well, and a few fields cannot be corrected later.

Title and subtitle. Enter them exactly as they appear on the cover or title page. These fields become permanent after the publication date passes.1Bowker. Title Set Up and Registration

Contributors. The author’s name or pseudonym, plus any editors, illustrators, or translators. Each contributor is entered as either a person or a company, not both.1Bowker. Title Set Up and Registration

Imprint name. The publisher name attached to the ISBN. For self-published authors this is often a business name you create yourself. The imprint is tied to your Bowker account and appears on every ISBN you register under it, so pick it carefully. A quick check of the USPTO trademark database before you commit can help you avoid conflicts with existing publishers.2United States Patent and Trademark Office. Search Our Trademark Database

Format. Hardcover, paperback, EPUB, PDF, audiobook, and so on. This field locks after submission.1Bowker. Title Set Up and Registration

BISAC subject code. A nine-character alphanumeric code — three letters followed by six digits, such as FIC000000 for general fiction — that tells retailers and libraries how to categorize the book. The Book Industry Study Group publishes the full list for free, and Bowker’s form includes a searchable dropdown. Primary subject also locks after submission.3Book Industry Study Group. BISAC Subject Codes1Bowker. Title Set Up and Registration

Publication date. The date the book becomes available for purchase.

Retail price. Number only, no dollar sign. If you plan to generate a barcode through Bowker, verify the price first, because the price field locks the moment the barcode is created.4Bowker. Identifier Services – Email Instructions

Which Fields Lock, and When

The registration form is not a document you can freely revise. Three lock points are worth knowing before you touch the submit button:

ISBNs themselves cannot be transferred between publishers. Once a number is assigned to an imprint, it stays there permanently, so registering under the wrong imprint name creates a problem you cannot undo.

Working Through the Form

You need at least one unassigned ISBN in your account before the registration form will open. Once you have one, sign in at myidentifiers.com and open “Manage ISBNs” from your account menu. Your list shows every ISBN you own, marked as assigned or unassigned.1Bowker. Title Set Up and Registration

Click an unassigned ISBN or use the “Assign Title” button next to it. That opens the registration form. Move through the fields in the order the form presents them, pasting or typing from the metadata document you already prepared. Take care with the imprint dropdown, the format selector, and the BISAC search, since those are the fields that will lock or that shape how the book is later discovered.1Bowker. Title Set Up and Registration

Before you submit, read every field back against your notes. Check that the title matches the cover character for character, that the contributor is entered under the correct person-or-company setting, that the format matches the version this ISBN belongs to, and that the price has no stray characters. Then confirm.

After You Submit

A confirmation email arrives shortly after submission, summarizing the metadata you registered. The title then flows into Bowker’s Books in Print database, which is what libraries, retailers, and distributors search when they decide what to order. Bowker’s FAQ says to allow roughly five business days for standard, non-priority processing before the title appears.5ISBN.org. FAQs – General Questions

If you notice a mistake in a field that has not yet locked, you can log back in and edit it. Once a locked field is wrong, your only real option is to contact Bowker or, for format errors, assign a fresh ISBN to the correct version and abandon the incorrect record.

One ISBN per Format

A single registration form covers one version of one book. Every distinct format — hardcover, paperback, EPUB, PDF, audiobook on CD, audiobook as a digital download — needs its own ISBN and its own separate registration.5ISBN.org. FAQs – General Questions The ISBN identifies the specific edition and format so that retailers can distinguish, for example, a $14.99 paperback from a $27.99 hardcover in their ordering systems.6International ISBN Agency. What is an ISBN

A revised edition with substantive content changes — new chapters, restructured material — also needs a new ISBN and its own registration. Fixing typos does not.5ISBN.org. FAQs – General Questions If your paperback and e-book share a single ISBN, retailers cannot track them as separate products, which causes inventory problems and can block distribution outright.7Bowker. Mistakes That Cannot Be Undone

The errors that hurt most are the ones the form will not let you fix. Reusing one ISBN across two formats is the most common. Submitting the wrong format, wrong BISAC code, or a title with a typo are close behind, because those fields lock at or soon after submission. Generating a barcode before you have finalized the cover price locks in a price you may later want to change.4Bowker. Identifier Services – Email Instructions

Buying ISBNs from unauthorized resellers is a separate trap that turns up before you ever reach the registration form. Those numbers may be registered under the reseller’s imprint rather than yours, which means you do not control the book’s publisher record. Bowker at myidentifiers.com is the only official ISBN source for U.S.-based publishers.7Bowker. Buy ISBNs

One boundary to keep in mind: if you publish only through Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing, you may not need to fill out Bowker’s form at all. KDP offers a free ISBN for paperback and hardcover titles, and e-books and low-content books on KDP use Amazon’s ASIN instead. A KDP-issued ISBN lists Amazon’s imprint and limits you to KDP distribution, so registering your own through Bowker is the path if you want independent bookstores, libraries, or non-Amazon retailers to carry the book.8Amazon KDP.
