To get a residence permit in Sweden, you apply to the Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket) under the category that matches your reason for staying longer than 90 days: work, EU Blue Card, study, family reunification, or self-employment. Each category has its own eligibility rules, financial thresholds, and document list, and each application follows the same basic path: online submission, fee payment, biometrics, and a wait for the decision.
Pick the Permit Category That Fits Your Reason for Coming
The category matters. Applying under the wrong one leads to a denial, not a helpful redirect, so start here.
Work Permit
You need a valid passport, a signed employment contract, and terms that match Swedish collective agreements or what’s customary in your industry. For applications submitted from June 1, 2026 onward, the minimum monthly salary is SEK 33,390, which corresponds to 90 percent of Sweden’s median salary.1Government Offices of Sweden. New Minimum Wage Level for Labour Immigration and Stricter Requirements for Family Member Immigration Applications submitted before that date fall under the previous threshold of SEK 29,680.2Swedish Migration Agency. Your employer must arrange health, life, occupational injury, and occupational pension insurance to be in place by the time your employment begins.2Swedish Migration Agency. Apply for a Work Permit in Sweden From June 1, 2026, work permit holders whose permits last one year or less must also show they have comprehensive health insurance valid in Sweden that covers healthcare and repatriation.
EU Blue Card
This one is for highly qualified workers. You need either higher education equivalent to at least 180 credits or five years of relevant professional experience, plus a signed contract for a highly qualified position lasting at least six months. As of July 2025, the salary threshold is SEK 52,000 per month, equal to 1.25 times the average gross salary in Sweden.3Swedish Migration Agency. EU Blue Cards Your employer must advertise the position in Sweden and the EU/EEA for at least ten days before offering it to you.
Study Permit
You need a valid passport, final admission to full-time studies at a Swedish higher education institution, and proof any tuition fees have been paid. Admission isn’t final until the tuition is paid and the institution confirms that to the Migration Agency.4Swedish Migration Agency. Apply for a Residence Permit for Studies at Higher Education
The 2026 maintenance requirement is at least SEK 10,656 per month for the full duration of your permit. Free housing from the institution reduces that by SEK 4,736 per month, and free food by SEK 2,960. Family members applying with you add SEK 4,440 per month for a spouse or partner and SEK 2,664 per month for each child.4Swedish Migration Agency. If your studies last less than one year, you need comprehensive health insurance covering emergency care, hospitalization, emergency dental care, and medical repatriation. Students admitted for a year or more register in Sweden’s population register and get access to the public healthcare system.4Swedish Migration Agency. Family Reunification
Immediate family members of someone already living in Sweden can apply to join them. Immediate family means a spouse, registered partner, cohabiting partner, or children under 18. If the person in Sweden is a child, their parents count as immediate family.5Swedish Migration Agency. Family Reunification for People Who Have Been Granted Asylum in Sweden
The person already in Sweden must meet a maintenance requirement, meaning enough income after tax and rent to cover set amounts. For 2026, the minimum left over is SEK 6,243 per month for a single adult, SEK 10,314 for cohabiting partners, and between SEK 3,336 and SEK 5,339 per child depending on age.6Swedish Migration Agency. Maintenance Requirement for the Person in Sweden Because those figures are what must remain after rent, the actual gross income needed runs considerably higher.
Self-Employment
Self-employment permits are among the hardest to obtain. You need a valid passport, real experience in your industry and in running a business, relevant knowledge of Swedish or English, and ownership of at least 51 percent of the company. The Migration Agency assesses your business plan, so you also need established customer contacts or a network in Sweden.7Swedish Migration Agency. Self-Employed People
You must show enough of your own funds to support yourself and any accompanying family for the first two years: at least SEK 200,000 for you, SEK 100,000 for a spouse, and SEK 50,000 per child. The money has to sit in a bank account in your name, and loans generally don’t count. On top of that, you need enough to cover expected business costs and investments.7Swedish Migration Agency. What Documents You’ll Need
Every permit category requires copies of your valid passport showing personal details, the validity period, and any previous visas or stamps. Everything you submit must be in Swedish or English. If you translate a document from another language, the translation must be certified, and you must include a copy of the original alongside it.4Swedish Migration Agency. Beyond the passport, what you attach depends on the category:
- Work permits: signed employment contract and evidence terms meet collective agreement standards.
- EU Blue Card: employment agreement for a highly qualified position and proof of higher education or five years of professional experience.
- Study permits: admission decision, proof of tuition payment, documents showing you meet the maintenance requirement, and health insurance documentation if your studies last less than one year.
- Family reunification: birth certificates, marriage certificates, or other proof of the relationship.
- Self-employment: bank statements from the last three months showing sufficient funds, bank certificates, and a detailed business plan with budget documentation.
The forms themselves also ask for personal details, contact information, educational history, employment history, and travel history.
Application Fees
Every application requires a non-refundable fee paid at submission. As of February 2026:8Embassy of Sweden. Application Fees – Migration Section Updated February 2026
- Work permit, new or extension: SEK 2,200
- Self-employment: SEK 2,000
- Study, research, or international exchange, adult: SEK 1,500
- Study, research, or international exchange, child under 18: SEK 750
- Family reunification, adult: SEK 2,000
- Family reunification, child under 18: SEK 1,000
If your application is rejected, the fee stays with the agency. Confirm you’re in the right category before you pay.
Applying Online
Most applications go through the Migration Agency’s online e-service. You create an account, select your application type, and the system takes you through each section. To use it, you must be at least 18, have a valid email address, and pay with a Visa or Mastercard.4Swedish Migration Agency. Apply for a Residence Permit for Studies at Higher Education
After you fill in your personal, educational, and employment details, you upload scanned or photographed copies of your supporting documents and pay the fee at the end. Once submitted, a confirmation lands in your inbox and you can log in to “My Page” on the Migration Agency website to track the case. Accuracy at this stage matters. Discrepancies between the application and the documents you upload are one of the most common causes of delay.
Giving Biometrics
After you submit online, you give biometrics: fingerprints and a photograph. These sit on the chip of your residence permit card and aren’t stored anywhere else.9Embassy of Sweden. Biometrics
Where you go depends on your nationality. If you’re from a country that needs an entry visa, you must have the residence permit card in hand to enter Sweden, so you give biometrics at a Swedish embassy or consulate in your home country. The card can be issued no earlier than six weeks before your start date and takes two to four weeks to ship from Sweden. If you’re from a visa-free country, you can enter Sweden first and book an appointment at a Migration Agency service center after arrival, though appointment wait times at some offices are long, so book early.9Embassy of Sweden. Biometrics Children under six are exempt from fingerprinting but still get photographed. There’s no separate charge for the card itself.
How Long It Takes
Processing time depends on the category and on whether your application is complete when you file it. The Migration Agency publishes statistics based on recently decided cases showing the time within which 75 percent of applications were processed:10Swedish Migration Agency. Statistics on Waiting Times
- Highly qualified workers, EU Blue Cards, and researchers: about 1 month if complete, 3 months if not.
- Family of an employee or self-employed person applying separately: about 2 months if complete, 13 months if not.
- Self-employed people: about 16 months or more.
- Au pairs: about 4 months.
- Seasonal workers: about 3 months.
The gap between a complete and incomplete file is often the difference between weeks and months. A single missing document can tip you into the longer bracket. The agency may also request more information or schedule an interview during the review, which happens often in family reunification cases. Do not book travel or quit your existing job before you have both a final decision and the physical card in hand.
After the Decision
Decisions arrive by email, with the official letter available by post or for collection at an embassy or consulate. If you’re approved, you receive a residence permit card that proves your legal status and is required for re-entering Sweden after international travel. Because the biometric data is only on the card and not stored centrally, you’ll be photographed and fingerprinted again every time you need a new card.11Swedish Migration Agency. Residence Permit Cards
If you’re rejected, the decision letter sets out the reasons and explains how to appeal, with the deadline included. Read that deadline carefully. It’s strict, and missing it generally costs you the right to appeal.
Extending a Permit and Working During the Wait
If you already hold a work permit and apply to extend it before it expires, you may keep working while the agency processes the renewal. The rule: if your current work permit has been valid for six months or more and you filed for the extension before it expired, you can carry on working. If you’ve held the permit less than six months, you cannot. You can also change employers while the extension is pending, provided you submit the new employment contract to the Migration Agency.12Swedish Migration Agency. Moving Toward Permanent Residency
A residence permit is temporary and tied to the reason you came. Permanent residency is a separate status you typically apply for when extending your current permit, after living in Sweden with a valid permit for a qualifying period that varies by category: work permit holders, family reunification permit holders, self-employed individuals, and doctoral students each follow different paths.13Swedish Migration Agency. Apply for a Permanent Residence Permit
Beyond the time requirement, permanent residency asks that you can support yourself financially and demonstrate good conduct. Long absences from Sweden or gaps between permits can reset the qualifying clock, so keeping your permits continuous matters. Check the specific rules for your category well before your current permit expires, while there’s still time to close any gaps.
