To get an International Driver’s License in South Africa, apply to the Automobile Association of South Africa (AA), which is the only body authorized to issue the document, known formally as an International Driving Permit (IDP). You’ll need your valid South African driver’s license, an ID or passport, and a passport-size photograph. You can apply at an AA branch or accredited sales agent, or online through the AA’s portal. Before you pay, confirm whether your destination country recognizes the 1949 Geneva Convention permit or the 1968 Vienna Convention permit, because they are not interchangeable.1The Automobile Association of South Africa. What the Permit Actually Is
An IDP is not a license on its own. It’s a booklet that translates the information on your South African driver’s license into several languages, including French, Spanish, Russian, Chinese, and Arabic. It only works when carried alongside your original license. If your underlying license expires or is suspended, the IDP becomes worthless regardless of the date printed on it.
The permit is recognized in over 150 countries. If you’re pulled over or involved in an accident somewhere police don’t read English, the IDP gives them your credentials in a language they can process. Many car rental companies also require one before releasing a vehicle, even in places where local law wouldn’t strictly demand it.2The Automobile Association of South Africa. Travel Services
Pick the Right Convention: 1949 or 1968
South Africa is a party to both the 1949 Geneva Convention and the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic, so the AA issues two different IDPs.3United Nations Treaty Collection. Convention on Road Traffic (1949)4United Nations Treaty Collection. Convention on Road Traffic (1968) Your destination decides which one you need:
- The 1949 Geneva Convention IDP is valid for up to one year from issue. It’s required by many countries in Africa, Asia, and the Americas.
- The 1968 Vienna Convention IDP is valid for up to three years. It’s required by most European countries and some others.
Some countries accept either version; a few accept neither and rely on bilateral arrangements instead. Check the AA’s country list or the embassy of your destination before you apply, because ordering the wrong type means the document won’t be honored on arrival.
One limit applies to both versions: an IDP cannot outlast your South African driver’s license. If your license expires in eight months, so does your IDP, whatever the convention’s maximum period says.
Who Can Apply
The AA can only issue an IDP to a holder of a valid South African driver’s license.1The Automobile Association of South Africa. International Driving Permit Learner’s licenses and temporary permits don’t qualify. Your license must be current when you apply and must remain current for the whole period you intend to use the IDP abroad.
The vehicle categories on your IDP mirror those on your South African license. If you hold a code B license for a standard passenger vehicle, your IDP will cover that category. You won’t be issued an IDP for a class your domestic license doesn’t already include.
Commercial Driving Is a Separate Permit
If you plan to drive commercially in South Africa itself, a standard IDP won’t cover you and neither will a foreign license alone. South African law requires a Professional Driving Permit (PrDP) for anyone operating heavy goods vehicles over 3,500 kg, minibuses carrying 12 or more passengers, taxis, or vehicles hauling dangerous goods. Age thresholds are 18 for goods vehicles, 21 for passenger vehicles, and 25 for dangerous goods. Applicants also need a medical certificate no older than two months and a clean record for the past five years on offenses involving violence or impaired driving.5South African Government. What to Bring
Gather these before you apply:
- Your valid South African driver’s license, the card itself and not a copy.
- Your South African ID document or a valid passport.
- One passport-size photograph per IDP type you’re applying for. Photos can be taken at selected stores, so check availability at your chosen collection point.1The Automobile Association of South Africa. International Driving Permit
If you’re applying for both convention types because your trip crosses regions, bring a photograph for each.
Applying in Person or Online
You can apply at any AA branch or accredited sales agent. In person, the process is quick: bring your documents and you’ll usually walk out with the physical permit the same day.
The AA also runs an online application portal where you upload your documents and pay electronically.2The Automobile Association of South Africa. Travel Services The physical permit is then couriered to you, which adds several business days. Don’t leave the application to the week before your flight.
Fees
Fees vary by IDP type and by whether you collect at a branch or have the permit couriered. Confirm current pricing with the AA at the time of application, since the schedule is updated periodically. Also confirm the convention type your destination requires before paying, because a wrongly ordered permit is a wasted fee.
You Can’t Apply From Abroad
One rule catches travelers off guard: the AA only issues South African IDPs inside South Africa. There is no consulate-based application and no overseas renewal. If your permit expires while you’re traveling, you cannot replace it until you’re back home. If your license has plenty of validity left, it’s worth applying for the longer 1968 permit where your destination accepts it, so a single trip to the AA covers you for as long as possible.
