How to Get Bahamian Citizenship: Four Routes and Requirements

To get Bahamian citizenship, you generally need to qualify through one of four routes: birth in The Bahamas to a Bahamian parent, descent from a Bahamian parent if you were born abroad, marriage to a Bahamian citizen, or naturalization after at least ten years of legal residency. There is no citizenship-by-investment program. And with narrow exceptions, becoming a Bahamian citizen means renouncing whatever nationality you currently hold.

The Four Routes

Which pathway fits you depends almost entirely on where you were born and who your parents are.

Birth in The Bahamas

A person born in The Bahamas after July 9, 1973, is automatically a citizen if at least one parent is a Bahamian citizen at the time of birth. For children born outside of marriage, only the mother’s citizenship counts.1The Bahamas High Commission London. Fact Sheet on Bahamas Citizenship

If you were born in The Bahamas to two non-Bahamian parents, you are not a citizen at birth. Article 7 of the Constitution lets you apply to register between your 18th and 19th birthday. That is a one-year window, and approval is subject to national security and public policy review.2Bahamas Immigration Department. Citizenship

Descent

If you were born outside The Bahamas after July 9, 1973, and your father is a Bahamian citizen by birth, you are entitled to citizenship by descent — but only if you were born within marriage, and only if your father was himself born in The Bahamas rather than abroad to Bahamian parents.1The Bahamas High Commission London. If it is your mother who is Bahamian and you were born abroad, the rule is different. You can apply to register between the ages of 18 and 21, subject to national security and public policy review, and you must renounce any other citizenship and take an oath of allegiance. There is one workaround: if your Bahamian mother registers you as a minor before your 18th birthday and the application is approved, renunciation is not required and you can hold dual nationality.1The Bahamas High Commission London. Marriage

A foreign woman married to a Bahamian citizen may apply to register as a citizen, provided the marriage is still intact and residency conditions are met.2Bahamas Immigration Department. Citizenship

A foreign man married to a Bahamian citizen does not have this registration route. He has to go through the general naturalization process, which is longer and has its own eligibility requirements. That gender distinction is written into the Constitution and remains the law.2Bahamas Immigration Department. Citizenship

Naturalization

Naturalization is the route for legal permanent residents. You need at least 10 years of legal residency, including the 12 months immediately before your application date, plus a minimum of six years of actual physical presence in The Bahamas during the period before that final year.2Bahamas Immigration Department. Citizenship

On top of the residency threshold, you have to show good character, an intention to keep living in The Bahamas, and a working knowledge of English and Bahamian civic life. The Minister has broad discretion over every naturalization application.

The Investment Route Is Really a Residency Route

The Bahamas does not offer citizenship by investment. What it does offer is accelerated permanent residency for people who invest at least $1 million, either in Bahamian real estate or in Zero Coupon Bonds purchased from the Central Bank of The Bahamas. The investment must be held for at least 10 years.3Bahamas Immigration Department. Permanent Residence

Permanent residency lets you live and work in The Bahamas indefinitely, but you have to spend at least 90 days a year in the country to keep it. Only after holding permanent residency for 10 years and meeting the physical presence requirements for naturalization can you apply for citizenship. The earliest realistic timeline from initial investment to citizenship is roughly a decade, and the Minister can still say no.

You Will Likely Have to Give Up Your Other Citizenship

This is where many prospective applicants stop. The Bahamas generally does not recognize dual citizenship. Bahamian citizens who voluntarily acquire another nationality risk losing their Bahamian one, and most people who naturalize as Bahamian will be expected to renounce their previous citizenship.1The Bahamas High Commission London. The exceptions are narrow. People born abroad who hold dual nationality from birth can keep both until age 21, at which point they have 12 months to renounce the foreign one or risk losing their Bahamian nationality. Children registered by a Bahamian mother before turning 18 can also keep both. Everyone else has to choose.

Documents and Fees

Every application requires the same baseline documents:

  • Two passport photos taken within six months of the application date
  • Original birth certificate
  • Original medical certificate dated no earlier than 30 days before submission
  • Original police certificate issued within six months, covering five years of residence history (required for applicants 14 and older)

Beyond that, the extras depend on your route. Descent applicants need copies of the Bahamian parent’s birth certificate and passport. Marriage applicants need a certified copy of the spouse’s birth certificate and the marriage certificate. Naturalization applicants should bring proof of residency such as property deeds or rental agreements, plus financial statements showing they can support themselves.2Bahamas Immigration Department. Any document issued outside The Bahamas has to be authenticated, either by apostille (for countries in the Hague Apostille Convention) or by legalization, and then verified by the Bahamian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Documents not in English need certified translations, and each translated document requires a $10 Bahamian postage stamp.2Bahamas Immigration Department. Citizenship

Fees come in two parts. A non-refundable $200 processing fee is due when you submit, payable by cash, credit or debit card, postal or money order, or bank certified cheque.2Bahamas Immigration Department. How to Submit and What Happens Next

Before submitting, write a formal letter addressed to the Director of Immigration requesting citizenship. That letter goes in with your completed form, notarized and stamped with a $10 Bahamian postage stamp, and all supporting documents. You submit in person at the Department of Immigration, where staff check that your package is complete and collect the $200 processing fee.2Bahamas Immigration Department. Citizenship

Check everything before you go. A missing document or an expired police certificate can send you back to the start of the queue, and the medical certificate has a very short validity window.

Once your application is accepted, it goes through background checks and security screenings. Some applicants are called in for an interview about their personal history, time spent in The Bahamas, and reasons for seeking citizenship. Straightforward cases can sometimes get a response in three to four weeks, but most applications take 12 to 24 months.2Bahamas Immigration Department. Citizenship If you are approved, you take an Oath of Allegiance to The Bahamas at a formal ceremony and then receive your Certificate of Citizenship.

If You Are Denied

The Minister is not required to give any reason for denying a citizenship application, and the decision cannot be appealed or reviewed in any court.5Bahamas Immigration Department. Bahamas Nationality Act That applies to any decision within the Minister’s discretion, which covers naturalization and most registration pathways. There is no formal appeals process, no administrative tribunal, no judicial review. You can reapply, but you cannot challenge a refusal.

What Citizenship Gets You That Residency Does Not

Citizenship carries some concrete advantages over permanent residency. Bahamian citizens can vote in national elections and run for public office. They can also buy and own property without going through the registration and approval process that non-Bahamians must navigate via the Investments Board.6Government of The Commonwealth of The Bahamas. The Bahamas imposes no personal income tax, no capital gains tax, and no inheritance tax. Revenue comes primarily from value-added tax and stamp duties. For anyone moving from a high-tax jurisdiction, that is often the single biggest draw. One caveat: U.S. citizens and green card holders remain subject to U.S. tax on worldwide income regardless of where they live, so the tax benefit is far more meaningful for nationals of countries that tax on residence rather than citizenship.
