If a Greek parent, grandparent, or great-grandparent connects you to Greece, you likely qualify for Greek citizenship by descent, but the path splits sharply depending on how close that ancestor is. A child of a Greek citizen is already Greek under the law and simply needs to register that fact; someone whose Greek roots run through a grandparent or further back applies for naturalization as an ethnic Greek. Greek consulates make the distinction explicit: they don’t grant citizenship to children of Greek nationals, they help you exercise a status you already hold.1Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Hellenic Republic. Figure Out Which Track You’re On
Everything about your timeline, paperwork, and fees depends on this first question.
If a Parent Was Greek: Registration
Under Article 1 of the Greek Citizenship Code, a child born to a Greek father or Greek mother acquires citizenship automatically at birth, whether or not the parent ever exercised it.2Global Citizenship Observatory. Greek Citizenship Code The process is a registration, not a grant. You are entering your birth and your parents’ marriage into the records of a Greek municipality, and that registration then serves as your proof of citizenship and the basis for a Greek passport.1Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Hellenic Republic. Greek Citizenship – Greece in the USA
If a Grandparent or Earlier Was Greek: Naturalization for Ethnic Greeks
When your parents weren’t Greek citizens but earlier ancestors were, you’re in a different category called “omogeneis,” or ethnic Greeks. Under Article 10 of Law 3284/2004, ethnic Greeks living abroad file through the Greek consulate for their area, which forwards the application to the Ministry of Interior with documentation of Greek origin.3Hellenic Republic Ministry of Interior. Greek Citizenship Code Law 3284/2004 You’ll need to demonstrate both Greek origin and “national consciousness,” meaning a genuine connection to Greek culture and identity, which the consulate evaluates in two stages.1Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Hellenic Republic. Greek Citizenship – Greece in the USA
There is no hard generational cutoff, so a claim through a great-grandparent is possible. The chain, however, must be unbroken. In practice, an intermediate relative who was never registered as Greek may need to complete the process first before you can claim through them. If your grandparent is still living and was never registered, they will typically go through the process before you can.
The Pre-1984 Maternal Line Complication
Before the early 1980s, Greek citizenship passed primarily through the father, and this trips up a lot of applications that look straightforward on paper. Children born to a Greek mother married to a foreign national before May 8, 1982, were not automatically Greek in the same way. A separate procedure exists for these individuals to acquire Greek nationality by declaration.1Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Hellenic Republic. Greek Citizenship – Greece in the USA
A related situation affects children born before May 8, 1984, who initially acquired Greek citizenship through their mother but lost it when a foreign father later recognized or legitimized them. A reacquisition procedure exists for these cases.1Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Hellenic Republic. Greek Citizenship – Greece in the USA If your claim runs through a Greek mother or grandmother who married a non-Greek during this period, flag it with the consulate at your first contact. The fix exists; it just adds a procedural layer if it comes up late.
Documents You’ll Need
The required documents differ by track, but both build a paper trail linking you to your Greek ancestor.
For registration, the consulate handles entering your parents’ marriage and your birth into Greek municipal records. You’ll submit your birth certificate, your parents’ marriage certificate, and identity documents.1Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Hellenic Republic. Greek Citizenship – Greece in the USA
For naturalization of ethnic Greeks, Law 3284/2004 sets out the core documents:
- A naturalization declaration made before the consul in the presence of two Greek witnesses.
- A passport copy or other valid travel document.
- Your birth certificate, plus birth certificates or equivalent civil registration documents for each ancestor through whom you trace Greek origin.
- A criminal record certificate issued by authorities in your country of residence.3Hellenic Republic Ministry of Interior. Greek Citizenship Code Law 3284/2004
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also lists additional items for certain categories, including a signed declaration about whether any relatives have already acquired Greek citizenship, and an optional request to Hellenize your name.4Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Hellenic Republic. Proving Your Ancestor Was Greek
This is where applications stall. You need evidence that your ancestor actually held Greek citizenship. Useful sources include old consular passports, ancestral entries in municipal population records (even registers that no longer exist), records of family members who already acquired Greek citizenship, consular registrations, and Greek military service records.5National Registry of Administrative Public Services. Naturalisation of Expatriates Residing Abroad If you don’t have these documents, Greek municipal archives hold civil registration records, usually kept at the local mayor’s or community president’s office. Knowing your ancestor’s village or city of origin speeds things up considerably, so ask older relatives what they remember about the family’s town before you file anything.
Apostille and Translation
Every foreign document you submit needs two things: an apostille and a certified Greek translation.
Greece is party to the Hague Apostille Convention, so public documents from the United States, Canada, Australia, the UK, and other member countries can be authenticated with an apostille rather than full consular legalization.6U.S. Department of State. Greece Judicial Assistance Information In the U.S., apostilles come from the Secretary of State’s office in the state that issued the document, typically at $10 to $26 per document. Documents from non-Hague countries have to go through the longer consular legalization process instead.
Legal documents like birth and marriage certificates must be translated by translators certified with the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs.7Greek Embassy in Washington DC. Important Note Regarding Translations/Interpretations Also accepted are lawyers who are members of Greek law associations and graduates of the Ionian University’s translation department.8Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Translations / Interpretations Certified English-to-Greek translation runs roughly $25 per page, with variation by translator and complexity.
Where You File
Living outside Greece, you file through the Greek consulate serving your area. For registration cases, the consulate handles the process directly with the Greek municipality.1Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Hellenic Republic. Greek Citizenship – Greece in the USA For naturalization of ethnic Greeks, the consulate forwards your application and supporting report to the Ministry of Interior.3Hellenic Republic Ministry of Interior. Greek Citizenship Code Law 3284/2004 If you already live in Greece, applications go to the Directorate of Civic Status at the Decentralized Administration office for your area.9Hellenic Republic Ministry of Interior. Fees and Processing Times
Registration as an existing citizen costs 100 euros under the Greek Citizenship Code.2Global Citizenship Observatory. Greek Citizenship Code Naturalization for ethnic Greeks from Albania, Turkey, or former Soviet Union successor states is also 100 euros, and ethnic Greeks from ex-USSR countries may pay nothing at all.9Hellenic Republic Ministry of Interior. Timelines are the hard part. The code technically allows the Prefecture two months to decide once it has the file and calls for registration to complete within six months.2Global Citizenship Observatory. Greek Citizenship Code The Ministry of Interior’s own materials say actual processing runs one to two years for ethnic Greek naturalization and two to four years for standard naturalization.9Hellenic Republic Ministry of Interior. How Can I Become a Greek Citizen Straightforward registration cases with well-documented Greek parents tend to move faster than cases requiring verification of distant ancestors. Expect requests for additional documents along the way.
After Approval
For the registration track, entry into a Greek municipality’s records is the finish line and your legal proof of citizenship; the passport application follows through the consulate.1Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Hellenic Republic. Greek Citizenship – Greece in the USA For naturalization, you generally take an oath of allegiance within one year of the decision, register in a municipality, and then apply for your passport.
Military Service If You’re Male
Newly registered male citizens are often surprised by this one. Greek law requires all male citizens between 19 and 45 to perform military service, and it applies to men who register their citizenship for the first time well into adulthood.10U.S. Embassy and Consulate in Greece. Greek Military Obligations If you live permanently outside Greece, you can postpone the obligation until age 45, when it ends permanently.11Hellenic Republic – Greece in Australia. National Service
Postponement carries a strict travel limit: no more than six months in Greece per calendar year. Overstay it and you lose your permanent-resident-abroad status, and you may be required to serve before you can leave the country.11Hellenic Republic – Greece in Australia. National Service The U.S. Embassy specifically warns about this scenario.10U.S. Embassy and Consulate in Greece. Greek Military Obligations Before your first trip to Greece as a new citizen, confirm your military status with the consulate and obtain a Certificate of Permanent Residence Abroad if it applies to you.
What You Get
Greece allows dual citizenship, so you don’t renounce your current nationality. Holding Greek citizenship also means holding EU citizenship, which gives you the right to live, work, and study in any of the 27 EU member states without a visa or work permit. You can vote in Greek elections, and under the same Article 1 provisions that qualified you, your own children acquire Greek citizenship automatically at birth.2Global Citizenship Observatory.
